View Full Version : First insurance quote for an Aussie RX-8
P.D.U 07-01-2003, 05:30 AM I know that insurance quotes will be different for everyone and that insurance quotes in general have been discussed extensively in earlier threads. However, I managed to actually get a quote today. I have tried several times previously but with no joy as the insurers simply didn't have the car on their systems.
There are many factors that will determine your RX-8 insurance quotation. They are :
1. Power of the car's engine
2. The car body style
3. Your age
4. Your accident record
5. Your no claims discount
6. The location where the car is kept
The whole thing is a ratings system with points allocated for each section. Locations have ratings that are related to the risk of car crime in that area.
The quote I was given is with Allianz (who are known to be expensive but have very good policies). The engine was classed as a 1.3 Litre, body is 4 door coupe, I'm 34, no accidents involving 3rd parties but 1 claim on my previous car, 40% no claims and I live in Avalon. My quote is $2,600 per year. The car is rated around the same level as a Holden HSV, but below a Suburu WRX and a Nissan 200SX.
One point I noted is that Allianz will not insure anyone for an RX-8 who is under 30 years of age.
I intend to get quotes from AAMI, GIO and Just Car Ins. I think I can get it down to about $2,000.
P.D.U
So far, only quote I can find for me (25 y/o male, lifetime 60% no claim, 1 speeding fine 2 years ago) is approx $2,150 I think that was Suncorp Metway. www.suncorp.com.au they're the only ones so far I have found who have the the 8 in their system.
Depends how you're financing it, but if you're doing a lease, then you might be able to get fleet insurance, which is about $2,200. That's pre-tax too under a lease :D
Titanium RX-8 07-02-2003, 06:06 AM Looks like no Allianz for me (I am 28). I have a 60% NCB however which I have held for 5 years. One claim in 10 years, no speeding fines. I tried the suncorp site, came up at $2200 for me. Quite a jump from the $1046 I just paid for the 1998 MX-5! I'll try the ring around if I have any spare time at work tomorrow.
richwu 07-02-2003, 09:15 AM I just did an estimate on the web through NRMA I'm 27 and with max no claim bonus.. it will cost me $2154.60
mktchin 07-02-2003, 11:57 PM i got a quote from AAMI $1612, rating 1 protection, private use, $68000 agreed value, 35 year old male driver, $450 excess. not bad. will go for it. budget direct gave a quote of $1950, suncorp $1800.
the initial AAMI quote waas for $683!!! i asked if it was a mistake and the person on the phone kept saying it was correct until i asked her to check with her manager. then it was revised.
i should have kept my mouth shut.
cheers
mike
richwu 07-03-2003, 12:14 AM HI Mike, did you get the quote from the internet or on the phone??
mktchin 07-03-2003, 01:44 AM got aami quote from phone and the others via internet web quote.
what's the cheapest in melb?
i think the aami is quite competitive
they gave me a rough quote of $2500 three months ago, so i'm happy.
cheers
mike
Titanium RX-8 07-03-2003, 03:27 AM Just tried NRMA. With max no claim bonus they were $2070 (28 year old driver 1 claim in last 5 years).
Wizza 07-04-2003, 04:04 AM ok you ready for this?????????
I just got 2 quotes......I'm 29 y.o. with 1 speeding fine in the last 12 months, no claims in the past 5 years.
Quotes:
Suncorp- $2082 per year and $800 excess with no other driver allowed.
AAMI- $1186 per year and $450 excess lifetime rating 1, and my 28 y.o. wife can drive aswell!!
Agreed Insurance value is $68,000 for both quotes.
Hmmmmmmmm..... Wonder which one I should go with?
:)
mktchin 07-04-2003, 08:42 AM how did you get $1186 from aami. i could only get $1612 from them. what's your area code?
i'm 35, rating 1, no claims, no infringements.
mike
Wizza 07-04-2003, 08:24 PM Post code is 3136.
The girl i spoke to said she had to go and speak to someone as the car was on their list but had not been categorised yet.(what ever that means)
When she came back her words were..."my manager must be in a good mood".
I didn't ask or say anything special....just got lucky I guess.
I certainly made sure i wrote down the referance number she quoted.
She did mention that as i had been with AAMI for 4 years, that helped.
richwu 07-05-2003, 05:48 AM Wizza how can you get quote from AAMI?? they don't insure RX8 with anyone under 30!!! when you are only 28???
Wizza 07-05-2003, 08:20 AM Hey i don't make the rules....I just break them.
I'm 29 turning 30 on 17th of August so maybe they made an exception?
All i know is that i'm sitting looking at my referance number now!!
I'm certainly not going to ring them and complain.
;)
Titanium RX-8 07-06-2003, 04:33 AM I just got a quote for AAMI. I am 28, max. no claim bonus. They were $2845. Think I will stick with the NRMA ($2070). Wizza, if I were you I wouldn't misplace that reference number. The difference between your quotes is astounding to say the least.
rollin8 07-06-2003, 04:40 AM $1200 a year from prosperion
but u gotta finance with them too
Wizza 07-06-2003, 07:44 AM I have asked AAMI to post me a copy of the quote. When i get it i'll confirm what the details are as listed!
richwu 07-06-2003, 06:32 PM Wizza, You are soo lucky.... :D
still looking for a cheaper one to go for. at the moment NRMA is the cheapest for me.
Wizza 07-09-2003, 09:42 AM My qoute i just recieved in the mail is as follows:
Policy: Comprehensive
Car use: Private
Drivers: Me(29 yo 95%, and my wife 28 yo 5%)
Claims/Accidents: Nil
Motoring offences: 2002 traffic infringment
Your car:
2003 MAZDA RX8 f/Inj COUPE R2 Cyl Man
Amount covered: $68,000 (agreed value or market value if higher)
Excesses: $450 (+$200 if drivers 25 and over but licenced under 2 yrs
12 Month PREMIUM: $1186 (+ $20 if wanting an accident rental car)
Well there you have it.
Go and start hitting your insurer's, as the must be able to do better.
Winning 07-09-2003, 09:51 AM I have not ask for any quote yet. I will wait until my STI sold, then it will be the best time to ask them. He he, I will ask them about a new one when I discontinue my insurance for my STi. It normally works. I only paid $1750 for my STI.:p

Wildcard 08-05-2003, 05:12 AM Wow, it looks like I got a good deal. $1316 with AAMI. 27yo with max no claim and 1 speeding ticket last 3 years. No previous insurance claims. Living in Newcaslte. From what I have read in these posts, it looks like where you live makes more difference than your previous driving record or how old you are.
Good luck guys, shop around!
P.S. One sleep to go - pick up my car tomorrow (Wednesday). Sunlight silver with leather pack.
labrat 08-05-2003, 06:56 AM We're paying $1097 with AAMI, but then again, we're way more mature than you guys, absolutely rusted on rating 1 for life with house and contents, CTP and comprehensive on both our cars.

DO YOU GUYS KNOW IF THE CAR IS FULLY PAID THE INSURANCE IS HALFED.
Withdraw from your mortgage loan!!!!! :D
P.D.U 08-06-2003, 07:37 AM Seeing as I started this thread I though Iīd let you all know how I got on with insurance. You'll be pleased to know that I didnīt accept the Allianz quote of $2600. But I didnt have to shop around either. The very next quote is the one I purchased.
Itīs with AAMI, includes my wife, and is.......wait for it.........$593.
Yes youīre reading that correctly. Five Nine Three. And Takahashi, I didnīt need to withdraw from my mortgage.
And get this.... the first set of paperwork they sent through didnīt mention cover for my wife. So I called them back and we checked through all the details again and the quote was the same.
Its now all paid up and I pick up the car tomorrow.
Yeah baby !!!

P.D.U 08-06-2003, 07:40 AM Not sure whats happened to my apostrophe (above)

aus rx8 08-07-2003, 06:19 AM How are you guys getting these prices????????? I'm signed up with NRMA. The first quote was 3111 and I was happy when they requoted at 2898. When I checked with aami and others all quotes were over 3000, and thats with a perfect driving and insurance record with both my wife and I over 30. The only down is that the car is for business. ( That only added about 400 to the premium though) Oh Yeah the NCB is 65%.
Unless of course my premium is to cover all the RX8s in Sydney
Wizza 08-07-2003, 06:40 AM Unless your registering your car in a business name, i would be telling them it is for personal use. When i got my quote of $1186 i was told that AAMI would not even insure that car if it was for business use.
At the end of the day, your still the driver right?
I'm a sole trader though, maybe it's different if your a Pty. Ltd.?

What the-!
How did you manage that!
mktchin 08-07-2003, 08:38 AM my original quote was for 683 from aami. (see previous post). the corrected premium for me was 1612 for area code 3032. there is an error in their tables. people may get an adjustment or a higher premium next year.
i registered personal use but under a pty ltd company name as i said that the care was used for driving from home to work and back again. not used for courier, sales, delivers etc. drivers were listed as myself and spouse.
i guess the insurance thing is a bit of a raffle.
from the quotes, it seems that aami is the most competitive.
mike
P.D.U 08-07-2003, 09:20 AM I reckon it IS a bit if a raffle sometimes. Sure the insurance companies use tables to assess the theft risk of your car and where you live, your age and driving experience etc. etc. There's also no doubt that the premium I have is not representative of the norm for the RX-8, which seems to be anywhere between $1200 and $2000.
There are a couple of factors that may have influenced my premium. (1) I sold my previous car a couple of months before the RX-8 was due to arrive and I cancelled my policy with AAMI which still had 5 months to run. (2) My wife is still insured with AAMI for her car.
I think it's like the banks. They will give you a very good deal if they regard you as a 'high net worth' customer. i.e steady full time job, good salary, mortgage, good credit rating etc. Someone who is worth beating the competition for because the risk is low and therefore the profit is high.
Anyway, whatever way you look at it I got a bloody bargain and I'm putting it down to the fact that I'm well overdue a bit of luck like this !
P.D.U
aus rx8 08-07-2003, 09:42 AM Good to see Lady Luck shining. Seeing as it is so late I'm guessing you have been taking the new one for a spin. Hope all went well with the delivery
mktchin 08-07-2003, 09:42 AM hi pdu
i agree. whenever you can get away with something from the insurance companies, good luck to you!
i have had aami insurance for 7 years without a claim, have my house and contents with them and they still gave me 1612 for the rx-8.
interestingly, i did a web quote for 3153 post code with same details, and the quote was down to 1200. 3153 is outer eastern suburbs.
anyway, 1612 is fair, 2000 and over is UNFAIR.
cheers
mike
PS lookout for a red rx-8 with RCSPL plates! i saw my first rx-8 other than my brothers blue one the other day in the city. any one on this fourm own it? looks great from the outside!!
P.D.U 08-07-2003, 09:48 AM aus rx8,
I'm always up late. I'm a bit of a night owl, but I also have a 13 week old son so I do the night shift up until 1am or 2am each night then my wife covers the middle of the night.
I must admit though, I did go and sit in the car in the garage about an hour ago listening to some favourite CDs on the Bose sound system. IMO it sounds fantastic.
P.D.U
Choppy 12-14-2003, 05:50 PM Dame the pricing you guys are getting are excellent..
23 year old here with two fine one speeding and one red light camera two years ago. i have Max no claim bonus also..
Getting $3700 from NRMA :(
Just car Insurence $4300
Wow... a post comes back from the dead :D Very exxy that is! Try AAMI, they're bastards, but they seem to be the cheapest.
21 - rating 4 - loss of license in 2000 - Just Car Insurance - $2700
33 y.o, Max no claim bonus, one minor speeding fine in the past three years.
Quote from Just cars $1300
RAA insurance $1090.
Phew - some pretty stiff premiums there. :(
Comprehensive from SGIO, with a basic excess of $250, mine was $866.60
But the car is fully paid for - i.e no finance - I don't live in a city (so may be a lower risk area???) and I'm an older guy with a clean licence and no previous claims. So maybe there is some benefit from being an old fart (of course the downside being that I get to be dead earlier than most other owners.... :p )
But the same company wanted nearly $600 for our standard Mazda 323 hatchback. A car worth a third the cost of the RX8. So we got a much better quote from another company on that one. It does seem that it can be a bit of a lottery.
timbo 12-14-2003, 06:51 PM AAMI, full ncb, $950 (but no under 25s to drive AT ALL!) heh heh hee, that riles my sons

What a great excuse! :D
I've steeled myself to let 3 or 4 friends have a try at the wheel, but there's a couple of younger guys I'd feel a bit twitchy about giving ago...
I did let one 17 year old P plater have a short drive (just a few hundred metres up our quiet dead end road to our gate) and he did a great job. Very proud of the fact that he didn't stall the car at take off - which his Dad just did. :p
Choppy 12-15-2003, 12:33 AM Dame it must be my area then :(
Im in Sydney 10 mins from the CBD dont think im in a bad area like just off Brighton beach.. but who knows how they rate these things..
Regards
Phillip
MadMAX 12-15-2003, 12:49 AM Could be an age thing. I am 39, max no claim and I got a quote from RACQ for $875... Sometimes it's good to be old :) just ask L & L! ;)
Hymee 12-15-2003, 05:31 AM Mine is about $1000 with Suncorp Metway. $650 exceess, no under 25's, rating 1 for life etc...
AAMI sounds OK, until you drive around and see the panel shops with the signs out the front "NO AAMI QUOTES". Well, that was a few years ago. Maybe times have changed, but that was enough to put me off.
Cheers,
Hymee.

I think that was a couple of years ago, and there are still some war stories around, but certainly the repairer I have used in the past in Canberra, Barrett Bros, works with AAMI and does excellent work (suddenly falls to knees and prays this thread does not come back to haunt)
Well mine was about $860 from Suncorp Metway and nearly had to use it last week when a Hail Storm went thru my area (first one in over 10 years).
As luck would have it my RX8 was safe at home while my other car was getting a cut & polish at a Panel Beaters.
Went out and bought myself a "scratch it" later that afternoon.
takahashi 12-16-2003, 05:57 AM I am rating 1 and have my insurance at my folk's place at inner eastern suburb in Melbourne. At 29 y.o, I am getting a reasonable offer from AAMI for $1315. I am sure if I hunt around it will be cheaper. But it allows me 3 mods... so very hard to choose - my top choices now are bodykit, wheel and muffler
I'm with AAMI - their repair policy sucks!!!
When my car was egg damaged, they weren't going to carry out repairs to make the car "as new" to my satisfaction. I paid out $2k to get the job done properly, but ... the lazy sh!t that I am ... I haven't tracked down another insurance company yet (that will no doubt be more expensive).
takahashi 12-16-2003, 02:38 PM Why not? What is the policy of repair guartantee for life. Anyway, you can choose your own repairer and get a quote from them before you carry out. I have a repairer that I knew from past experience that they are good and the AAMI in my area use them a lot. Not that I wanted to visit them!
takahashi 12-16-2003, 02:40 PM AAMI is rating 1 for life. My friend's boxster S changes his front spoiler after having a minor scratch - he asked the repairer to update his spoiler to 2003 model. THat bastard has a new spoiler for $450!
Does it work for MazdaSpeed front spoiler do you reckon
