First post here. I'm currently talking to a dealer online for a 2005 RX8, GT package, with spoiler, nothing else. He's asking 30k +TTL which I know is high. We've been going back and forth with pricing. This is the last few messages back and forth......abridged version to save space.

Dealer: Here is our offer. Invoice price on this vehicle is $29,312 (if we get this one). If this one is not available, Invoice would be $29,352. Neither one of these have the spoiler, so we would add it. So, with that said, plus cost of getting it, our offer is $30,000+TTL. That is less than $700 over. A very fair deal for both parties. Let me know...

Me: Cost of getting it? I won't pay extra because you don't have what I am asking for in stock. That is a cost your store will have to incur, for getting the customer what they want. According to the two prices you listed as invoice, the difference in the spoiler is $40. Or is there some other reason for the two difference invoices?

Dealer: The difference in cost is just the difference of when they built the cars. As I mentioned before, neither have the spoiler, we would have to add it. Our price is at $30,000+TTL. Your offer of $138 over is not high enough....That will not even cover the cost of the spoiler.

Me: What do you mean the difference of when they built the cars? Are you insinuating that the prices for two identical cars are different because of their build date?

Dealer: No, I am not insunuating. I am giving you actual fact. The MSRP will not change, what changes is our cost of the vehicle. If they built a car in October of 2004 and built another in Feb 2005 and the MSRP is identical, the cost of materials or labor may have gone up at the factory, so therefore the cost of the vehicle goes up. As I said, MSRP stays the same, just the invoice price gets higher and our profit margin gets cut.

None the less. Our offer is $30,000 +TTL with adding the spoiler.

Me: Well then what's the invoice on a GT straight from the factory ordered now, with spoiler already installed?

Dealer: $29, 948 .... with an MSRP of $32,040....

What I don't understand is the invoice pricing. Edmunds shows MSRP $32,040 exactly what this dealer is saying, but an invoice of $29,345. Can anyone verify the exact invoice of an 05 with GT, and spoiler? Is this guy padding his "invoice" to jack up the price?

From what I understand, the "price of labor goes up" is bullshit. They're tricking you into paying more. Even if you pay the invoice price they still have the holdback and all sorts of fees to cover their asses.

Bringing a car in that is not in stock will cost the dealer more because they have to transport the other car to their location and it will probably cost them a dealer to dealer trade. Both of these are something they do not like to do. Either go find exactly what you want at another dealer (if that is possible) or tell this dealer that you will take this car off their hands, ( even though it's not what you really wanted ) if they are willing to make a deal. Play hardball, walk away for a day or two and make the dealer think about losing a sale because of a couple hundred dollars. There are lots of RX-8 for sale. Don't get anxious. Be patient. Just my opinion

dude start calling all the dealers within 100 miles around you to get the price you want. He's just messing with you.

Don't come back to him.. he'll call you in a few days.. when he gets hungry for a sale. When he does tell him you found another dealer willing to give you the price you want and you are buying his car and that you thank him for all his help. He'll talk to his manager to see if he can bring the price down.. trust me on this

Just go ahead and call the next closest dealer to you and see if he can match it. call a bunch of other dealers that are nearby. Driving an hour for a deal might be worth it.

Remember you have all the power and there are plenty of 2005 rx8s out there with the color/options you want.. its not like he has the only one.

If you were in IL, i could get you invoice all day long on any 05' rx8 all day long...

Every dealer I have talked to has made a followup call.

hold out and get the best deal....go to several dealers and tell them what your needs are and what you are willing to pay....personally i dealt with 3 dealers and had them fight it out for lowest price/best deal.....if a dealer has had the car on their lot there is hold back which is lower than the invoice....if they trade a car they lose the hold back....try to find a car that was originally sent to the dealer and get them at invoice or under....if they see you are serious and have cash in hand then they will make the deal unless they are stupid

Just seems like no one in San Antonio, TX wants to come close to invoice. Am I going to have to just deal with it? 2 dealers have told me that the car I'm looking for, (titanium grey, gt, 6sp) is no where to be found in TX. If that is the case, and a dealer has to order a car for me, is it true they will not get holdback? Maybe is that why they won't come down anymore? Is 3% over invoice decent? I told one the other's offer, and he replied with "Enjoy your car, if it falls through, my offer is good until the end of the month." Start calling other dealers in TX. Someone will beat their price and then see if the dealer in San Antonio will pricematch it. Tell them that its worth the price to drive out.

In my opinion, 3% over dealer invoice is really competitive already- unless you're in a position to negotiate w/ a dealership that's desperate to move inventory...

Unfortunately, I had to special order a car thru the mazda partnership program, because no dealer had the color/ options I wanted. I found the online web sites to be a good point of reference for dealer costs- if you're going to be haggling on options. (edmunds.com, kelleybluebook.com, carsdirect.com)

The dealer doesn't know the final price of the car until they actually get an invoice from the factory- ie when the car is delivered to them. So, in my case, the dealer estimates my vehicle price based on past orders... So, the dealer's story to you about the manufacturing costs affecting the final price may hold a drop of water.

The invoice price, MSRP, EPlan and SPlan prices are all listed on the Vehicle Invoice. Go to mazdausa.com and check the inventory using a zipcode and 150 mile radius. Use major city zipcodes and look in different areas. Find the car you're looking for. Call the dealership and have them fax you the invoice. I'm eligible, so I tell the dealer I want to get the fax so I can verify the S-Plan price. I also tell them I travel to that area and I'm looking to buy the car from them.

After they fax you the invoice you'll have access to all of the prices.

Email back your dealer and say, "I want this car, give him the VIN number, and this is the price I'm going to pay. Email me back if we have a deal."
