View Full Version : Port-installed options....
Hercules 06-24-2003, 05:51 AM What do I tell the dealer when I want something added?
Also, what are the options available? Anything on the accessories list?
Thanks!
TreknMazda 06-24-2003, 07:50 AM The only port options that I know of are those added to the RX-8 configuration site. None of the other accesories listed in the elusive (my dealer has never seen it) RX-8 accessories brochure are available, yet but can likely be ordered through the dealer when they are. I think what Mazda has done was rush through what they thought would be the most popular and/or readily available options for the pre-order program. Future buyers will have more choices.
If you want something now, you better call immediately. Despite what some dealers are saying, I think the ship is arriving next week in Jersey City (July 2). As I understand it the order can be updated easily prior to Port arrival. If you do it now, next Monday's report should show the options you added. It will help if you go to your dealer with the part numbers that are listed on the invoice/msrp sheet that was posted in the forum a while back. Just in case he has no idea what you are asking. ;)
RXhusker 06-24-2003, 08:32 AM I added the appearance and rotary accent packages while the ship was at sea -- no problem.
I wanted to add the strakes, exhaust finishers, aluminum sills, rotary wheel centers, and rotary valve stems but dealer couldn't add to the port installed options. He also tried to order through parts and the parts manager called Mazda and they said that they were not ready to take orders on RX-8 parts yet and that a dealer memo would be going out soon on RX-8 parts orders. The Parts Manager said he sure hoped Mazda didn't screw up the RX-8 like they did the 6 when it came out. I guess they were not ready for parts orders for quite some time after the car was released. Dealer is supposed to contact me when they receive the parts memo. I would really like to have all the goodies installed bfore I pull out of the dealership :D

JaxFL_RX8 06-24-2003, 11:02 AM And what exactly is this crap about NOT including a spare tire with this $30K car? Whatta bunch o' nonsense. I saw that and almost had a seizure.
Just give me my car and I'll shut up.

I saw that and almost had a seizure. Not wanting to cause thread creep, but Mazda's obviously done their homework and decided that the majority of potential purchasers would rather have a repair kit and more trunk space, while those that particularly want a spare will plonk down some extra cash to get one.
And frankly, it seems that they're right - I know some folks have complained about having to pay more for a spare, but I don't recall anyone saying they're not going to buy because of it.
If I was going to use my car around town exclusively, I would have been happy with the repair kit and Mazda's roadside assistance plan. But since I intend to take my car out into the back blocks of BFE on occasion, I opted for the spare. I can always remove it if I need the trunk space. :)

Thread creep are two words I've never seen used together. I'll have to go research that. Does this repair kit come with the car or is it an "add-on". Certainly not getting a spare would never prevent me from getting this car, and Mazda banked on that.

on the contrary treknmazda...i had no problems getting prices for and ordering the accessories that i wanted from the brochure a couple of weeks ago. (all except for the color coded ones like shift knobs, car covers, etc.) you should try giving your dealer's parts dept. a call and see if they can order what u want. i would've gone that route had my saleman not come through for me. ;)

The RX-8 comes with a tire repair kit which includes a bottle of sealant, a valve stem removal tool, and an air pump. Sufficient for most routine occasions, but it won't seal a large gash or sidewall puncture.
Anyway, to avoid the aforementioned thread creep, I'll say no more here, but refer you to other threads which have already addressed this subject. A search for "spare tire" should find 'em.

ELX13 -- did you order anything that isn't a port installed accessory (like the strakes, door sills, etc.)? I had no problem ordering the accessories that can be port installed (rotary accents, appearance pkg, etc.) but couldn't order the other stuff. I sat with the Parts Manager on 6/23 when he called Mazda and was told that the accessories/parts can't be ordered yet.

Are these items being installed at port or coming directly to the dealer? I was at the dealer last night searching their store room for the accessory brochure with the salesman. No luck. I'll have to print out the one on the forum and go back tonight. ;)
P00Man 06-24-2003, 01:46 PM hmmm, maybe i should try that now. last time i went to add the 6cd and MD all i got was one of these *blank stare*

Or perhaps you could use it as a noun, as in "A thread creep is a guy who diverts a discussion thread away from its original topic." Kinda like I'm doing now. ;)
I had had the exact same experience as RXHusker. Couldn't order all those other goodies.
Hopefully we can get them later as a dealer installed option???
RotorMotor 06-24-2003, 03:16 PM As an FYI to those considering adding options:
I was told by my dealer and rx8orders both that options could be added after the boat left but could not be removed! I tried to remove the appearance package and just get the rotary accents, strakes and CD changed installed in hopes of getting a different appearance package aftermarket (and cheaper) but was told that it was too late....
ReX-8 06-24-2003, 03:24 PM I contacted my dealer a while ago to add the rotary accent pkg. and the MP3 player. But the salesman said they have no pricing on the accessories yet, and guess I have to wait till the car arrives at the dealer, then have those stuffs ordered + installed. But I'm afraid they might not do a good job installing them and I have to pay the dealer installation fees..
ELX13 06-24-2003, 03:45 PM well fellas, to be more specific...i ordered the MP3 player and trim piece, rotary wheel centers, RX8 valve stem caps, and all weather floor mats. all of which are dealer installed i believe. (except maybe the MP3 player...but i don't think so.)
i swapped my splash guards for the appearance pkg. a while ago cuz i knew the app. pkg. was port installed.
hope that clears some things up.
FYI...to accomplish this i e-mailed my sales rep with names and part #'s (they had no brochures at that time either, haven't checked back since). he then replied to me with prices and i called to tell him which ones to go ahead and order.
edit: this was all done during the week of 6/9/2003
B-Nez 06-24-2003, 07:17 PM Echo that, I ordered my MP3 (is dealer installed), car cover, cable lock, and shock sensor upgrade 1st week of June. I had part numbers in hand, but my service dep. DID have brochures. He called me back that afternoon with prices, and placed the parts orders.
brothervoodoo 06-24-2003, 07:22 PM B-Nez,
Do you have the color codes (Exp. car cover). Is it the same color code as in the VIN checks we've been getting from fubar? The VIN color code are 3 digits while the accessories ask for 2. Anyway, I'm looking for the Gray color code if anybody has it.
