View Full Version : First batch of Axial Flow Engineering (Richard Paul) Short Shifters arrived in Oz
Hymee 03-13-2005, 05:14 PM Hi guys,
The first "official" shipment is sitting at customs waiting for me to get and do some paper work and collect.
Unless RAP smuggled a prohibited substance in them and they are just waiting to arrest me. (I must have watched Border Security too much).
This is after 'Mez sucessfully trialled one earlier this year. 'onya 'Mez. http://www.hymee.com/smilies/sm_bounce.gif
I'll post some pics l8r. Then I better get down to the post office and forward Taka's one on to him. :D http://www.hymee.com/smilies/sm_dance.gif
Cheers,
Hymee.

The "N" flash is the U.S flash, Michael. You may have to pay import duty to get that one..... :)
I don't know how many shifters Hymee has left after the pre-orders, are you in the queue? Anyone who isn't, should be!
Gomez.

Hymee 03-13-2005, 11:03 PM This is the SHIFTER thread.
The FLASH thread is the one where we talk about OIL.
Yeah - I'm about to go and post Taka's and perhaps Locks as well.
Installed it. 2EZ!! About to drive it. Woohoo. Can't wait!!
Cheers,
Hymee.
timbo 03-13-2005, 11:11 PM Hey, what's this short shifter thing . .. seems I have completely missed a whole thread(s)...more info needed, especially on how it all works/looks.
(ok, I know now.... knowing Hymee, this whole discussion probably took place in some thread with the misleading name 'body kits' or 'extra hp from air cleaner' which -- to my obvious detriment -- I skip :( )
Don't tell me to 'search' -- I'll sulk!
Hymee 03-13-2005, 11:28 PM I shall use the search function.
I shall use the search function.

Bahaha. Gotcha back!

Cheers,
Hymee.
Gomez 03-13-2005, 11:59 PM timbo, wend your way through that thread to post 330. That's where the review starts. See also my DIY for the install. Do a search for that one, no link from me, buddy!!
Gomez 03-14-2005, 12:05 AM Don't tell me to 'search' -- I'll sulk!
As a wise man once told me,
Knowledge requires effort..... ;)
timbo 03-14-2005, 12:08 AM (sulking) want one now... have missed all the excitement...have felt like a duckwit since Aug 03 because of the 1-2 shift grnch...now I s'pose the frickin' queue's from now until Christmas... grumble, grumble, sulk...
So Gomez, you really are a shifty bastard :D
Hymee 03-14-2005, 12:43 AM I better put the remainder on e-bay.
Cheers,
Hymee.

Am hopeful of receiving Richard Paul's short sister ;) overnight, by courtesy of the Hymeister
(stops sulking)
Hymee 03-14-2005, 01:39 AM Timbo,
Yours is on its way. The only way I could get it to you any quicker would be for me to send it to you as unnacompanied baggage on a Virgin Blue flight! How much would that be do ya reckon, 'Mez??
Cheers,
Hymee.
timbo 03-14-2005, 02:07 AM Hey, if I'd have known that was an option.... ;)
I'm pretty impressed by Virgin Blue....especially their selection of cabin crew based on the, er, old criteria...
Of course, the frequency of their services to Canberra are pretty crap, but that is to be expected....

Free...if I was in Bne!!!
takahashi 03-14-2005, 06:59 AM Hymee thanks for running around for me. I found myself owing you a 6 pack. I will bring some beer when I have a chance to come to Brisbane.
Exciting news - never excited about short stick before... hehe
Hymee 03-14-2005, 04:39 PM A carton of Bundy and Cola would be fine, thanks!
Cheers,
Hymee.
So when do we get a Hymee review of his car's new short shifter? (Unbiased of course ;) )
Gomez 03-14-2005, 05:14 PM A carton of Bundy and Cola would be fine, thanks!

Richard would be proud of you, Hymee.....

That would be a better result than getting Richard's short sifter.... ;)
As a wise man once told me,
Knowledge requires effort..... So you don't remember this quote from early last year?? I'll jog your memory my learned friend, it had something to do with this picture...
Gomez :)
takahashi 03-14-2005, 05:46 PM Chatted with Hymester on the phone today. He is quite happy with the short shifter. I am sure he is going to do a unbias report.
Gomez, I have your shifter in my package, all greased up and ready to go. I am actually will be at Balwyn Friday night (maybe), Saturday and Sunday. So I will be free passing anything to you anytime on the weekend.
Will that be too much pressure to do a live installation or you prefer to work on Friday/Saturday night???? I will try to give you a call tonight.

Ya gotta be careful of so-called wise men....sometimes they really just are ... smart arses ;)
Aaahh Skid Marx ... a great avatar ... may go back there one day!
So, what else have I been missing on this forum   Gimme some good terms to search on.... :o
Hymee 03-14-2005, 06:19 PM C'arn Taka,
You can just about do it driving along. Hehehehe.
Just kidding.
Yes, I am very pleased with it. I drove it for much longer today. It took no time at all to adjust to it. It just snicks into gear, before you expect. The lockout on reverse is very positive. No problems going up and down through all six ratios. In fact it is almost like you just move the stick for-aft and it knows if you are going up ratios or down shifting and goes left/right throught the gates as appropriate. I know that is not what is happening, but it just seems to work so well. Shifts are completed like they are second nature. No need to really worry about which side of the gate you are on.
One thing I noticed. I used to sometimes go out of reverse, and into 3rd - which makes it a little hard to get off the line. Now the reduced throw means I think I got 3rd by accident, but I really got 1st!
To my best judgement, there is no additional noise coming from the stick whilst driving along. There is some nice whirrs slightly audible when you have you "hand on it" but only really when you hold pressure against it. When you just are doing nice easy shifts, you hardly hear any difference. But when you are getting up it, you can get some nice little whirs as the syncro's spin each other to match RPMs. Then - click.
There is one slight tip I can help with Gomez's instructions. It is regarding the first step in removing the console cover. The first small "access cover" part can easily be removed without the aid of a screwdriver. Just poke you finger in from the front, via the hand-brake slot, and push the cover to the rear.
Cheers,
Hymee.

Live install with a crowd bunched around me blowing cigarette smoke in my face and holding video cameras is fine.....but I want MY shifter yesterday!!!
Hymee 03-14-2005, 06:33 PM Live install with a crowd bunched around me blowing cigarette smoke in my face and holding video cameras is fine.....but I want MY shifter yesterday!!!
Oh FFS. I thought I was doing the right things sending yours with Taka's. He is close by you isn't he?? He has it already. He rang me on my way to work, and he already had them.
I could have sent them both seperatley. Sending them together didn't really saved much. I found out later I could get a 500g sachel for a little bit more than 1/2 the cost of the 3kg sachel. They just sneak under the 500g, bubble wrapped and all. Well done RP!!
Cheers,
Hymee.

I will install the short shifter at a friends place tonight with 3 kids and a suspicious wife its hard to hide in the garage ;)

Hey, no complaints from me...I've already got one! I just want to compare the two side by side for some pics :D .
Richard Paul 03-15-2005, 01:47 AM I'm really getting fond of you Aussies. Nowhere else can a group of guys have this much fun with no woman or beer. If this were a US group there would be bickering and back bitting. No one would deliver any shifters to the other guy. Not without grinding on it or something so it wasn't as good as his. Does that give Taka any ideas?
I'm very greatfull to Gomez for all he has done with the DIY. But, I'm cutting him down to a check every other month instead of every month. What can I do, the price of Bloody Marys has gone up. ;)
andtothinkyourallbastards. Who would have known?
Why is it called OZ? Is there a yellow brick road? Is toetoe there?
Hymee 03-15-2005, 01:58 AM No - it is because it is spelt Oztralia. :p
Cheers,
Hymee.

shiftyabastard.... :D Why, for your TLA attached compatriots, we'd even accept SYB as an acronym.... ;)

Yeah, I asked him a long while back about a name for the thing.....whether he'd engrave something on the side. I started the thread calling it the RP Short Shifter....some now call it the AFE Short Shifter, bloody confusing!!
How about the AFE Quicksilver Shifter, or something like that?
Gomez.
playa78 03-15-2005, 09:40 AM hi guys, who is selling this product now and how much? is it hymee or gomez?? rgds
Richard Paul 03-15-2005, 02:23 PM It was Gomez falt. Before I even started the project he started the thread called RP short shifter. So everyone calls it that thinking he was in on a secret naming meeting. Since then I havn't even given it much thought. People didn't care as long as I got it into production.
Now that it has calmed down a bit I should try and do something about it. How about: Doublethrowdownblackbeltbastarsshifter
Too long??
Quickshiftingbastard
Nah that seems to talk about the user not the shifter.
Rprx8ssss, for Richard Paul Rx8 stainless steel short shifter.
Or Rx8-4s
Well come on you guys are the funny ones. Give me something clever. Make up for 'mez lack of forsight. ;)
takahashi 03-15-2005, 02:48 PM I think RP shifter is quite nice. Sounds like a Big Kev product :p
Playa, Hymee has the goodies but I think he is running low in stock ;)
azzaboynt 03-15-2005, 03:12 PM I want it. I need it, however payday is 2 weeks away. :(
soon Hymee will be getting an order for a grill kit and one of them shifty thingos. :)
ILIV48 03-15-2005, 04:23 PM Well come on you guys are the funny ones. Give me something clever. Make up for 'mez lack of forsight. ;)
"The Wanker" by RP
Caution: With the installation of "the Wanker" by RP never has your hand on the knob been more enjoyable. You may just want to play with it all day!
A very Australian name me thinks, and we know you all want to be Aussies. A land where only 5 in 10 homes have running water but 9 in 10 have running beer :D
Lock & Load 03-15-2005, 04:47 PM hi guys, who is selling this product now and how much? is it hymee or gomez?? rgds
The Hymster has cornered the market on the short shifter making the millions  so contact him and poor Gomez got shafted with the one dollar per unit royalty .

It's an American dollar, however....... :p
Richard Paul 03-15-2005, 05:36 PM Wanker is good, double wanker? Yanker?
Is that true about running water? Well if I'm going to stay there I need running Bloody Mary's.
Hymee better let me know about restock cosidering the damn shipping time.
Plus there are only 17 left of this batch and then I have to start over.
I'll hold some back for you Hymee, no sweat.
Got to go the the DMV now to get my drivers license renewed. Damn do I dread that. I'll be in line for hours. Hope I can still read the chart. Guess they have some new laws now so I have to read the book. A plot to cut down on the productivity of the state of California. Can't I tell them I'm an ex racecar driver. Think they wouldn't like that eh. How about I give them a drivers test. How about I just give them a ride???
Lock & Load 03-17-2005, 01:07 AM Installed the RP short shifter this morning took about 40 minutes and have been driving around all afternoon testing it ;)
The movement is short and precise with a take no prisoners type of attitude  reminds me of the mechanical smooth bolt action of the 303 rifles  no problem in any of the gears love the second to third , quick as a flash and tight , just like i like my women :D and shifters .( thanks richard looking forward to your other products ) Gomez dont forget your $1.00 US dollar fee :p your instruction were spot on thanks mate
I feel priviliged to have found a group of( knowligable enterprisingmoneymakingrotarybastards who enjoy making our rides better
SORRY TO SAY THIS RICHARD BUT THE HYMTERS AUSSIE EXHAUST IS STILL MY NUMBER 1 MOD BUT YOU COME IN A CLOSE SECOND 9.75 OUT OF 10
Cheers

Having given this some serious consideration, and given your growing predilection to the Aussie vernacular... I'd suggest you call it the RiPa -- pronounced 'ripper', as in youlittleripper! Or the the more extended 'bloodybewdy..youlittleripper' (air punch and kiss ya mate [careful, no tongue]) as team scores winning goal in final moment at football!
Gives you a shake at posterity, too, RP ;)
Gomez 03-17-2005, 01:49 AM sounds interesting..

Who cares!!! It's a bloody Honda.

The Ripper Shifter...I like it. May be a little over the top of their heads though timbo....!
My Quicksilver name don't cut it Richard??? It's silver....and it's quick... :)
timbo 03-17-2005, 01:57 AM I edited the post to give it some more context...do you think it's still too esoteric... that's what we Ozzies are at our best ... esoteric... akin tothe genuine English eccentric...
Gomez 03-17-2005, 02:02 AM Actually, don't B&M make a Ripper Shifter...the name rings a bell?
Hymee 03-17-2005, 02:07 AM (air punch and kiss ya mate [careful, no tongue]) as team scores winning goal in final moment at football!
No tounge, or dry rooting please. Hehehehehe.
Cheers,

Gomez 03-17-2005, 02:09 AM You idiot Gomez!
B&M make a Quicksilver Shifter :D :D
Gomez 03-17-2005, 02:10 AM It is for an Auto though..... :)
Gomez 03-17-2005, 02:14 AM Bloody Hell, they DO make a Ripper Shifter!!!!

I have only driven two of them but from memory id say they are very similar in that they have the short precise yet smooth shift action .
I am beggining to think that some of our forum members have been out
celebrating St PATRICKS Day a weeeeee bit to early :D

timbo 03-17-2005, 09:54 PM I does me best!
Anyway, have fittred my RiPa now...whaddaliddelbewdy, eh (that's for Queenslanders ;) )
Snick, snick, snick, snick, snick, snickl
I have a bit of noise in 2nd, 4th is quiet, but it all feels very intuitive and positive.
Good work, RP :p
takahashi 03-17-2005, 10:41 PM I think there is more transmitting noises when you change gear but these are good sounds.
The gear stick is so nice that I am in heaven ;)
haha :D
Lock & Load 03-17-2005, 11:11 PM The also slight noise is  reminds me of sharpening a fine bowie knife blade , in the mornings the noise is slightly more noticeable until the car warms up , but then its f#$%ng awesome .

Richard Paul 03-18-2005, 12:27 AM Jack the Ripper shifter.??????????
When you grab your knob the shaft is so stiff you feel every engagment.
dracoMJB 03-18-2005, 02:10 AM I'm going to have to bite. How much for one? Looks like I may be looking at both a Hymee Exhaust and one of these short shifters when I get back from overseas.
Richard Paul 03-19-2005, 01:01 AM Hey Gomez, how do you get those sharp pictures? I bought a digital camera yesterday. Never used one before. It's a Nikon as all my film stuff is and I can't get much out of it. The pictures are not sharp. I'm trying to do close ups of the shifter for the website. I tried using two strobes and it came out darker. I tried three light sorces and it still didn't do much. I'm using slaves on the external strobes.
Got any hints, did I buy the wrong camerwa? Lets see if I can get you a sample in here.
Forget the samples I'll have to figure that out too.
rotarenvy 03-19-2005, 02:32 AM digital cameras are notorious for not focusing if you hold them to close to the object. hold them back from the object and use a optical zoom if it has one.

Hahahahaha...... Okay, let me get this straight. Your son works for George Lucas making mega films.....and you're asking some spoonhead who lives halfway around the planet how to use a Nikon!!!!
My advice....point and shoot!!! That's all I do :) . I have a Canon IXUS 400 4 megapixel jobbie that cost $500. You need a picture editor to resize them though. I use a program called Photoshop. It came with the camera. It's very popular and I'm sure someone close to home could hook you up with a copy.
Good Luck....call Hollywood and ask for help :D .
Your mate,
Go"It's a wrap!"mez. :)
mikeyr 03-19-2005, 02:55 AM Ok I feel like i beamed in from another planet?
Guy's where did you get them, how much and does Hymee have a batch of them. I've had Gomez's 2nd gear paranoia since day one and this sounds sensational!!!
Cheers
Mike
P.S. L&L have you recieved your swaybars yet? My brothers coming over for easter and hoping he can bring with him.
Lock & Load 03-19-2005, 04:07 AM Mikeyr
Short shifter is available through the HYMSTER , at $ 350.00 its a great mod i havent stopped driving my car since i installed mine :D Hymee may have a few left from the last shipment pm HIM .
Swaybars should arrive in a few days they were ordered on the 4th of March , there were none in stock so it takes them 10 / 12 working days to manufacture i will pass them on ASAP. ;)
Cheers
michael
mikeyr 03-19-2005, 04:46 AM Cheers Michael,
Birthday soon, think I just found my pressie!!!!!
Mike
takahashi 03-19-2005, 05:55 AM It was my bday pressie too ;)
Although I already opened, installed and playing with it.
labrat 03-19-2005, 07:30 AM On taking digital close-ups - most cameras have a macro setting - at least my Can IXUS 400 does. You can use it out to reasonable distances, and can be used for tight portraits without too much distortion. The word "macro" in this context isn't really a semi-micro setting.
Gomez 03-19-2005, 01:40 PM Yeah Richard, I don't know about the Nikon, but from memory I couldn't get a clear shot unless I was a foot away. You're not too close are you?
Richard Paul 03-19-2005, 02:12 PM Yes, thanks to you directors down under in Oz I got the hint I needed: Zoom, Zoom. Great pun, yes?
That's where it's at.
And as for that kid of mine who do you think tought him to use a Nikon. And who's Nikon do you think he learned on and never gave it back?
Saw it once or twice more when he came by for another lens and a motor drive.
I had to go out and get a new one. More expensive of course. Good thing Nikon accesorys fit most models. Kinda like having a small block chevy.
Anyway, I guess I got to go try it now. Sure is a lot cheaper to learn then with film. Faster to see your mistakes too. Nobody bothers with multiple lighting though? Except Polak that is. I'll keep you posted on my learning curve.

Richard what kinda lamps you using, and have you tried shooting with a 35mm cam just to make sure its the slave thats not broken?
Richard Paul 03-21-2005, 07:32 PM The slaves are working. Probably the camera sees the other light quick enough and shuts down the shutter.
Anyway there are new pics on your e mail. I took them outside and used the fill in flash mode. I zoomed out so I was about 18" from the part. I think they are usable.
Just going to take some getting use to this digital world. I was hoping it wouldn't come up on me this quick. Thought I might get out before they made me relearn everything around me.
Richard Paul 03-21-2005, 07:38 PM Hymee Enhanced just ordered another 10 shifters. Good on ya Hymester. :)
Gomez could open a little night shop installing them. ;)
I'm getting a press release ready for Rxtuner mag. Looking at other mags as well.
Just had to get the photo thing handled.
takahashi 03-21-2005, 07:52 PM Sounds like you will earn millions in this RP, nice work ;)
I will try to spread the word around and Mrs. Gomez will not be very happy :D
Scotty 03-21-2005, 08:38 PM Hymee,
Can I get added to the list for the next delivery of RP short shitfers.
I am finding 2nd to 3rd shifting problematic too - Its very annoying when your in a hurry.
PM me the order payment details.

What are people doing with their old stock shifters? Is there an Ebay market out there for people who have bent/broken theirs and dont know about these beauties?

just need to install it now !!~~
Got mine too! Thanks Hymee.
Carefully read Gomez's instructions. Oh so carefully prised the rear RH tab, and broke it :) Oh well, it's not noticeable.
Great shifting! Even my wife likes it.
You can definitely hear gear noise in-cabin though, especially in 2nd. (With radio off).

ozzie8 04-10-2005, 08:08 AM The install went exactly to plan thanx to Gomez' DIY instructions...thanx mate. Now that I am in the "snick, snick" club I would recommend the short shifter to anyone else who is looking to add a better feel to their driving pleasure!!!
playa78 04-11-2005, 11:22 AM installed mine on last Sat.. it was a very simple although I had hard time getting the centre console off since it was first time and was afraid of cracking something if I applied too much pressure.. after that it was a breeze. the shifting is good although it's very metallic at the moment. hopefully it will get loosened and smooth out as I drive more often.
i noted a lot of noise when shifting to 2nd gear but all in all very good stuff.
i've got some pictures if anybody wants to see.

LittleJohn 04-21-2005, 07:58 AM i noted a lot of noise when shifting to 2nd gear but all in all very good stuff.
OK I installed mine today and initially I noted lots of noise being transfered into the cabin. especially in 2nd. I even removed and reinstalled just incase I did something wrong.
So i've been driving around all day loving the shift action but was being really bothered by the amount of noise in 2nd and a little in 4th. To the point where I was almost going to reinstall the OEM shifter.
Then tonight as I was coming home I decided to remove the shift knob altogether whilst at a set of lights.
snick snick 1st gear... all good, then snick snick 2nd gear... and to my amazement no noise. just to be sure I drove the rest of the way home in 2nd and it was as quiet as the OEM shifter.
I get home a screw the know back on but not to tight this time and drove around the block, the noise came back ever so slightly but no where near as bad.
Further testing revealed that the amount of noise in 2nd was directly related to how tight the shift knob was screwed on.
Any thoughts anyone?
takahashi 04-21-2005, 08:18 AM playa78 ... are you korean. I felt in love with an Korean girl once. They are really nice people/girls...
I notice the 2nd gear has more noise when slowing down... the "woooo" sounds like the ambulance is behind me. There are kick kick noise during changing gear... I think it is cool.
Once it warms up and the lubes melts and get around all around the gear - it is perfect and very lovely. I got used to the 5th - 6th and I did get up to 3rd instead of 5th day. But hey, I should never let it back to neutral in the first place :)

You been out drinking rum with Hymee??
The knob doesn't touch anything, does it?
No, but the length of the shaft plus the knob may be triggering some sort of resonance (sound triggered by vibration).. When the knob is screwed up or down the shaft length changes and the resonance goes away...
Hymee 04-21-2005, 05:10 PM LittleJohn,
I know it is easy to say now, but when I was wondering about your problem before replying toyour emails, I thought about if you had tightened the knob enough. Sounds like you fixed it yourself! That must give you some gratificiation!

What he is saying is that the more he tightens it the worse it gets?
That doesn't make sense to me, that's why I thought he was hanging out with you at the Rum Factory. ;)
Really though, has iit been solved yet?? We have not heard this before from over 100 installs. Taka, you have a small whine in second, right? Could you try this trick next time you drive your car. Just loosen the knob a turn or two and give us a report back.

lol.. well at the very least my knob doesn't go anywhere near Hymee :p
I know it is easy to say now, but when I was wondering about your problem before replying toyour emails, I thought about if you had tightened the knob enough
Well, it's a case of over tightening it rather than not enough. Do you know if the OEM knob is hollow inside or anything like that.
From what I can see, it appears that when the knob mates firmly with the taper on the SSS (Short Shifter's Shaft :p ) it acts like a resonance box of sorts.... I could be talking out of my ass here. But that's the only explaination I can give for the excess noise when the knob is really tightened down hard.
I'm going to try and attach something like a small nut at the top of SSS so that I can still screw the knob down tight, but have it not mate with the taper on the SSS
takahashi 04-21-2005, 07:17 PM Taka, you have a small whine in second, right? Could you try this trick next time you drive your car. Just loosen the knob a turn or two and give us a report back.
RP, the whine is from the engine for sure. It has a change of tone while the rev is coming down. So I don't think it is from the shifter per se but it is just transmitting noise from the tranny I guess. I installed PoLak's leather boot and retighten the knob. It does seems no effect, so I think I have a different noise from what LittleJohnny has.

Hey Taka,
what you're describing sounds like that same issue. It definitely whines more when the revs are coming down.
Could you try and remove your knob altogether see if the noise is still there?
I don't beleive the noise is from the shifter itself, but rather Transmission noise being transmitted. Like I said, once the knob is completely off, there is virtually no noise at all. i.e. same as OEM.
timbo 04-21-2005, 07:45 PM Yes, there's a little more noise from the short shifter -- especially if you keep your hand on the shift after changing -- but the noise was always going to be there because, IIR, the OEM has a rubber isolator, which by design cut the transmission noise back while making the shift seem less precise. Am not sure what knob tightening / loosening does
Scotty 04-21-2005, 07:56 PM I have noticed the same thing as Timbo - if you leave your hand on the shift the downward/sideward pressure seems to generate more noise. Maybe the weight of the shift knob pushes the shift down in a similiar fashion. (have you tried pushing the shift without the knob on to see if it happens then?)
I don't mind the extra noise - it sounds racey :-)

yup.. all is quiet on the western front when the knob os completely off.

Just thought I'd add, that despite all the scientific conjecture and theories offered, LittleJohn's remedy really, really works. Did it myself and notice both 2nd and 4th noticeably quieter . I could end with all sorts of summary advice like not overscrewing your knob, but you blokes would take it the wrong way! :p

and yes we are nice ppl/girls, although I'm dating a chinese girl atm :D
takahashi 04-28-2005, 05:08 PM hong kong people are crazy about Korea atm. They show korean tv show - the one about old Korean kingdom and the female servant??? cooking and please the king. You know of that one??? it is so famous in hong kong & taiwan that korea builded a theme park with all the stage setytings for the chinese to visit!
back yop this thread. I think the insulator under the boot should be thicker to get of more noise while crising. I have it in the 6th and when crusing there is a very slight noise. like the noise when you lean the tab stick to the limiting plate on the right.
but when i lift the boot up slightly. the noise goes away.

OK.. I finally did it... After much screwing around with my knob, both clockwise and anticlockwise ;) I have found out how to get rid of the noise 99%
You may or may not have noticed when you removed the console that under the boot there is some sound deadening material, similar to the thick rugs that removalist use. Anyway, I removed that altogether and voila!!! the sound of silence was like music to my ears.. I even drove around teh block a few times in 2nd just to make sure and ran her through the entire rev range.. well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D
So anyone else who may be experiencing any sort of noise in 2nd, give this trick ago. I'm not making any promises as i can't figure out why this is the solution, all I know is that it worked for me.
EDIT: I still have a ball bearing out of a bicycle hun sitting on top of the SS, so that I can't screw the knob down too far.
Cheers.

Gomez 05-03-2005, 12:18 AM Walked back in the door two minutes ago. Removing the wadding reduces the noise by about 60%, I'd say!
A very significant reduction :) .

I can get to California for about $400. Get your bean-counter to send me a cheque!

Yes, but you guys are down under and maybe it works opposite here. I think we may need all your insulation up here to put in our cars and then tighten the shift knob. ;)

Good story Mikeyr. But I don't think they have that movie up here. Oh, of course, it's in the other section behind the door that says "Adults". ;)
The wadding thing only makes sense if it is too stiff and is transmitting noise from the shifter to the body or some chamber... If you remove the wadding is there more heat coming from the gear lever boot?
I am interested in this as funding is likely to be approved for a new shifter ahead of the legendary Hymee exhaust... :) The Finance Director hates strange noises... Screwing knobs is not her thing... :p
Hymee 05-03-2005, 06:15 AM Radio: Volume = 5, no strange noises :)
Hymee Exhaust: The proper noise :)
So I need to research a sound deadening and heat resistant material as my next enhancement, yeah??
Cheers,
Hymee.

Yes to the first bit.....no to the second.
The lever is attached to two rubber shift boots which lie under the faux leather one you see on the console cover panel. These rubber boots isolate heat from the transmission area and prevent direct entry into the cabin.
Gomez.
mikeyr 05-03-2005, 05:02 PM I don't believe that wadding designed to be acoustic deadeding could transmit noise. If it's too solid it may be pressing down on a surface causing the transmission vis a vis the weight suggestion or possibly changing the apprarent length of the shaft.
We may have harmonic's going on, ie moving the head up and down the shaft slightly changes it's nominal length. My brother in law is an audio engineer, going to see if he has any idea.
I can't see that it's a weight effect, moving the head a couple of mm is not going to have significant change in torsion. There are so many variable, ie the position of the plastic sleeve on the bottom of the shaft, mine cam off while i was reinstalling the 2nd boot. So now in a slightly different position from stock. This would change the mechanical force imparted by the rubber boot. (which in itself has to be bugger all)
I've tried the knob loosening and I really don't think there is a difference, but maybe mine wasn't as tight to start. Anyway keeps us all tinkering.

Mikey,
try removing the knob altogether and see if that makes any difference.
The noise I experienced when I first installed the RAP SS wa quite loud, so loosening the knob reduced it by at least 50%, then with the latest fix (wad removal), the noise level was reduced even further. I may have been a little over zealous with my other post saying that it removed 99% of the noise, but it is definitely a signifcant amount amount. I can hardly hear it now.

(which in itself has to be bugger all)
It's not weight, it's not harmonics, it's not apparent length of the shifter. It's pressure applied to the shaft by the shift boot. When you screw down the knob against the boot and the wadding, you are reducing the degree of freedom available to the shifter. See my quote from another thread below....
I believe it works by allowing the shifter to rest free of pressure supplied when the knob is screwed up tight against the shift boot. This pressure holds the shifter against the selector in the top of the box and transmits gear noise into the cabin. You'll notice that resting your hand on the shifter when driving increases the gear noise in a similar way.
Loosening the gearknob and removing the wadding removes the link between the shifter and the boot.
Gomez.
mikeyr 05-04-2005, 02:23 AM Mez,
I understand what you said in the past post, I just don't believe a kinked piece of 1mm vinyl can exert measurable pressure. And it won't be a constant in one direction and clearly the noise is increased by pressure (hand strength) by differing amounts depending on the direction. So I'm sceptical.:(
My shiftboot sits freely below the knob and i bet it would loose contact with the knob with a 50c piece placed on it. (even Kiwi $)
And i will try knob removal as a test. Cause I do believe in experimentation
Anyway it's the puzzle that bothers me not the minimal noise, and as I like to drive with a window open, I can't bloody hear it over Hymee's cans and Groove Armada on 10 anyway!
Still this keeps us busy and not thinking about "vapourware vapourisers from some disreputable queenslander".:D
playa78 05-04-2005, 03:07 AM I don't think it's the boot either.
I have a new gear knob and it has no contact (i.e. no screw on) to the boot but I still get the noise. It's actually more metallic (the sound) than before..
Hymee 05-10-2005, 08:27 PM BTW - I have more of these in stock.
Cheers,
Hymee.
Richard Paul 05-10-2005, 08:57 PM i was about to put my shifter in today as I have 730 mi on it. But I took it to the dyno and now I want to run it over a cliff. 156 HP.
I want to take it back to Mazda and shove up their ass. Give them a $30,000 Hemeroid.
i wish the car had been here when Hymee was so he could have given his opinion.
I sure hope it's just a reflash because I'm the one owner they can't afford to have pissed off. Because by nature of my buisness this car will be on the dyno lots. The dyno is only a few yards down the street and I get a discount. In fact it's halfway between work and home. No problem stoping off for a run.
I'm telling everyone I can about it because I'm fuming out my ears.
As soon as I can get my scaner hooked up I'll post the sheet.
Lock & Load 05-10-2005, 09:42 PM Richard no wonder you only dynoed 156hp give your engine an opportunity to be run in 3000km and above will get you better figures .
cheers
michael

I doubt there could be that much difference. I've built way to many engines and owned my own dyno for a lot of years. You get a feel for what is break in and not.
In fact I had a Superflow engine dyno for about 12 years, it was my favorite toy.
rotarenvy 05-10-2005, 10:41 PM I'd belive the low horsepower.
down a main straight on the track the my rx-8 with mazda's claimed 177kW can't gain ground on a std WRX that weighs more (around 160kW @ 1470kg ?) or a s15 200sx with less power & similar weight.
takahashi 05-10-2005, 11:31 PM Is there much variation on cars?! Like different RX-8s.
RP which gear you like to dyno in?
I have 125kW(170ps) @ wheel in 3rd gear and 131kW (178ps) in 4th. Is that just luck or the gear has something to do with it.

Yes the gear has something to do with it. I used 4th but if it had run ok I intended to go for fifth. I'm going to try the G tech a little later if I can get some numbers from someone else to match up to.
Hymee 05-11-2005, 01:57 AM I've got some plots from my MR-Dyno if we want to compare.
I normally would do a 2nd gear run starting logging at 40km/hr all the way to redline, which is about 105km / hour. That kept the speeds reasonable.
5th gear on the Dyno would be a little fast for some operators to feel comfortable with. Even 4th would be pusing it I think.
Rosso Diablo 05-13-2005, 02:37 AM Hymee, I'm generally not into the after-market but this time you've got me hooked. I therefore commend myself to your tender mercies for a short-shifter. Let me know where to deposit the loot and my hard-earned will be on it way forthwith.
Cheers
Ian
Richard Paul 05-14-2005, 04:03 PM Sorry Gomez, saved myself your airfare to the states and did it myself.
No breakie tabie!!!! :D :D
I just used a very small screwdriver between the black trim and the other black trim while pushing the tab with my finger. Poped right out in no time wasted. Whole thing took 15 min. Took the white wire holders off by inserting thin electronics style needlenose pliers and speading them out wards. Thus holding the grip surface away from the stud.
I have a thought on this. How about machining a little tube with the id of the stud, thin wall and a champher on one end. Press onto stud and lift plastic thingie off. I might consider making a bunch of these and putting one in the kit. I'm going to try it and see if it works.
Hymee 05-14-2005, 08:01 PM That would be a nice touch, Richard.
