I don't know any more. Idemitsu doesn't come in 5w20 and is a synthetic oil, so that would be weird if it were the factory fill. Mobil 1 is a synthetic oil, too. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Mazda North American Operations doesn't have the slightest idea what the truth is. Aren't they the same folks who said the 05 key can't be reprogrammed for the 04?

Here's the oil sold in Australia under the Mazda brand for rotary engines. Too bad it's not sold in the states. Yeah, I know, it's 5w30, but that's the recommended viscosity everywhere apparently but North America. The label is very interesting. It's a mineral oil, but I think the label implicitly says synthetic is fine for the Renesis engine.

Based on everything I've read, I think for my part, I'll use Castrol GTX 5w20 (a mineral oil) if I need to fill up before my first oil change (only 600 miles so far), and I'll switch to Castrol GTX 5w30 after that.

The Mazda Rotary Oil sold here in Australia is manufactured by Castrol, although there was some controversy as to its origins.

The earlier bottles were left unstamped whereas the latest batch has Castrol embossed on the bottle.

I've had both earlier and later bottles and the colour of the oil is slightly different, so I've come to the conclusion that the earlier batch was not manufactured by Castrol.

I thought I read somewhere that the oil was manufactured by Idemitsu, so I am lead to believe the early batch was made by them.

The label also seems to imply that synthetics are okay to use in the Renesis, but to be on the safe side, I've gone back to using the mineral Rotary Oil.

"Mobil 1" is Mobil's synthetic. All "Mobil 1" is synthethic. Not all Mobil oil is "Mobil 1". You can get Mobil NON-synthetic oil easily, and it is not part of the "Mobil 1" product line.

The Rotary Oil sold in Australia is imported in bulk from Japan. I have no idea who makes it, but it is decantered into retail 1 litre and 5 litre packs provided to Mazda Australia by Castrol......
