And finally, after long wait,i am doin this post in a state of hapiness!

Why?Because we finally managed to program a retractable key and a remote for the European Rx8.And we managed to do that with much less money than the dealer asked me.
I 'll explain:I found a used retractable key - remote (key was already cut) from ebay.co.uk with UK specs [visteon 41787],a non-cut key from ebay or a Hong Kong site,
and i allready had two spare keys (one didn't open the compartment box,its caled vallet key i think) and no remote that was working
And we did it!Retractable key and remote are fully functional! No way to pay 320 EUR that the f@#$@ing dealership asked for a programmed remote...
But one thing: don't ask me how those two were programmed!!I don't know.A friend of mine that is Mazda technician did it and i don't know if he used the method found here

Exactly :) Im glad you also manage to program it. All the amercians said I need a remote with exact same visteon number as my old one. That was just bullshit, I got a remote from the UK with visteon number 41787 and it worked perfectly. And my old visteon number was 41844. But I dont blame the americans, perhaps they only knew how the US models worked.

WTF wonderful-life?!?!? I'm one of those americans you spammed the cr@p out of during your ordeal and I NEVER, EVER, said you needed the same visteon #.

Perhaps you should start a "how to code your key if you have pent up anti-american agressions" thread...

after i've done all the reading, i wonder if there is a easier way(not he cheapest way) such as buy a key&remote combo and bring it to the dealer, pay them $90 and be done with it?
BTW, i have a 04 rx8 with one key, one remote only.

so, i've called the dealer, they told me just to programing the switch blade remote is free and $90 for cut the key and programing. I am going to get my key cut at the ACE hardware after my key is program.

so if i already have the key cut but just need the chip programmed, it'd probably still be $90? the dealers i live near are always more expensive than other people's...

my original was to receive my switch blade remote by this week from ebay. Go to ACE hardware have the key cut for $5. Go to the dealer and ask to have the remote program for free:). But, things are not always going the way you like. I got screw over by a ebay seller. I paid the remote last friday, i haven't get any email regarding if my remote is been send out. Wow, programming the keyfob/remote was a breeze. I was able to program it on the first try within 15 seconds. I did not have a working keyfob/remote since both of mine apparently died. So it can be done even if you do not have a working keyfob/remote. I have an '04 by the way. Have not cut the key or anything yet, so can't comment on programming a new key.

Here's how I programmed my remote:
Get in the car.
Close the driver's door
Open drivers door
Stick key in ignition and quickly turn from "lock" to "on" then back to "lock" then back to "on" then to "lock" then to "on" and finally back to "lock" and keep the key in there
Quickly push the toggle that's near your left elbow on the suicide door underneath the hinge looking thin
The locks on the doors start to lock and unlock and make some noise and then it stops
Then take the remote you want to program and press the "unlock" button twice. You should then hear and see the car lock and unlock itself.
Press the unlock button on your new remote once more and you should hear and see the car make the lock and unlock noise again.
Finally, close the drivers side door and pull the key out.

Now you should be able to lock and unlock your doors and pop the trunk open with your newly programmed remote.

Are you able to get the car in programming mode for the remote?

There are some remotes that unfortunately do not work with the 8 but we should make sure the directions were followed before blaming the remote.

Remote Programming
· Ensure that all doors, trunk, and hood are closed,
· open the driver’s door
Carry out the operation below within 24 seconds:
· Insert key
· Turn ignition to the run position and off, 3 times
· Leave key in ignition
· Push door switch, 3 times (The door switch is the little rubber one on the jamb of the rear door next to your elbow when sitting in the driver’s seat, which controls the interior lights.)
· Car will lock, then unlock (If it does not: wait 40 seconds and try again)
· Push 'Lock' on first remote, 2 times,
· Push 'Lock' on second remote, 2 times,
· Push 'Lock' on third remote (new), 2 times,
· Now all 3 remotes are accepted by the car.
A person only needs one working remote to setup a second remote but you need to program all remotes you have (up to four) when adding a new remote. Otherwise the remotes not programmed can drop off of the car’s database.
Key Programming

1. Have the additional key (key 3) ready (cut) for registration.
2. Using key 1, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (do not start).
3. Verify that the security light in the dash (looks like a little lock) illuminates for approximately 3 seconds and goes out.
4. Using key 1, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position within 4 seconds after the security light goes out.
5. Remove key 1
6. Repeat steps 2-5 using key 2.
7. Repeat steps 2-5 using key 3.
8. If additional keys need to be registered, repeat Steps 1-7 in the same manner as key 3.

Thanks for your quick response. I do get the car in the programmable mode with the Start and Lock 3 times and the push button on the back door. But when I hit the unlock twice, it just doesn t program.

Is there a frequency or signal light that my remote isn t getting? Just a little history (The remote just stopped working all of a sudden). Got another remote from Ebay and its not working, tried a different one and still no dice.

I do see that one of the Remotes seems to act after I perform these steps. It seems it catches a signal when I move it around. But after that I close the door take the key out and try it and it does not work. So thats why I ask if there is a signal the car has that might be interferring with the remote..

Hi guys, I'm a UK 8 owner and have bought a switchblade remote key from eBayUK. Unfortunately, I bought it before i knew this place existed.

When i pulled the key apart, it turned out to be the Mitsubishi version (still branded with the Mazda (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=170819#) logo). Followed the instructions for coding the key and that worked a treat. Starts the car no problem.

However i can't get the remote to open/lock the doors. Have tried the programming method on here. Would the Dealers be able to programme the remote to work? Was thinking of telling them that it used to work but has stopped since i changed the battery, but that it still starts the car.

Don't want to turn up at the Dealers and look like an idiot when they tell me that the Remote will have never worked.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Blades hello,

please read my post nr 250 in the previous page.I mention there that the Mitsubishi remotes won't work-we tried it. You MUST find from Ebay a Visteon one (No 41787). Ask your Ebay seller if he can exchange it, or buy another one after you make sure its a Visteon

Thanks for the reply, i read your post earlier. Just out of interest do you know what models the Mitsubishi version works on? ie Mazda 3/MX5 etc. Have been speaking to a Auto locksmith today who says it should be possible to program the key, though when i take it through to him i'm gonna check that he isn't just going to use the method that i have allready tried. Not sure if its going to be worth the £40 to find out what with your info.

Will let you know if i go ahead and take the chance depending on what metod he is going to use.

Got my hopes up when i managed to code the transponder so that the key will start the car.

The keys are as rare as hens teeth on eBay but will keep looking.

Cheers

Blades

Does anyone know if the procedure defined in this thread will work on 2006 and newer? I bought a new smart card but I cannot get the car to automatically lock/unlock itself after 3 on/off's of the key and 3 switch presses. Unfortunately the smart system with the key card does not program the same. It must be programmed by the dealer service department.

I thought you guys would like to know some more stuff. All the RX8 models use a static code transponder. You can program, or use Jet Smart Clone which is expensive but does all static code cars with a single key and the cut spare; which is a lot of makes.

There is also a way to get pass the transponder with handbrake and some sequencing, but I don't know it. Most chip key cars have them, Honda is the only one with it public.

I'm trading mine in on a 09 soon and will see what has to be done with it.

Pick up a switchblade version, you'll enjoy it everytime you start your car. ;)

like skrubol says
you do need at least one fob already programmed to the car to program an additional remote

at least two keys already programmed to the car to program another key (valet key would work if you have that, it is just cut a little different so that the trunk and glove box cannot be opened)

If you do not meet the requirements the dealership can program the key or remote with the WDS system that adds them to the ECU.

Who69, you'll need to bring it in to the dealer to have the key programmed to the ECU.

You can program the one remote as long as you have at least one other remote.

The key needs at least 2 already programmed, to add another key.

Everytime I have programmed a remote to an 8 I had to press the lock button on an existing remote to enter setup.

I just followed the programming remote instructions in the PDF or whatever it is at the beginning of this thread and used the new remote as remote 1. Worked first try iirc. To program the key I chose to get a valet key from the dealership rather than spending almost as much to have them cut/program my switchblade. In hindsight it might have been better to have the dealer take care of it, as I haven't been able to get a good key cut (first key wouldn't unlock door, had a hard time in the ignition. Second key works fine in ignition, but still won't unlock the door. If my remote battery dies I'm screwed.)

ok I just got off the phone with the dealership and they told me they can't program a new key without two keys either so I'd have to buy a valet key first which makes no sence to me cause they would have to program that right anywho they also said that they don't program remotes that I would have to order one from california customs so I'm not happy

This thread is confusing. So if I have an 04' with one key, and I want to get the switchblade and key programmed then I need buy a switchblade remote and key, then pay the dealer $143.00 to program it?

You're telling me! I am starting to get confused. :uhh:

The confusion came in when someone said they could get into the programming mode for adding the remote without having a previously programmed remote. I have never seen this happen personally, but also haven't tried because cars I have programmed already had at least one remote functioning.

For programming keys it is really easy as long as a person has two keys already programmed for the car. (see document at the beginning of the thread)

If a person does not then they will have to bring car to dealer to have the key programmed to the car using the WDS machine which adds the key to the ECU

Any of the advanced keyless systems (card remote) need to be programmed via the dealership. (Unaware of any way around this although eBay sellers have said that it is possible, in small print they say some systems may require that the dealership program the remote or key to the car).

Hope that helps clear some confusion.

The transponder is a static code passive type for the record.

You can use WDS to add a key with just one key, or use two keys to add a key, same applies to the fob too. Also JET has an expensive hand held device that will program off one key without the car. It does it for all static code transponder systems which is a lot considering only a few manufacturers use rolling code algorithms.

I use the 2:1 sequence method. I want to get the JET device though or another dynamic cloner. I'm surprised there isn't open hardware for it considering the popularity of RFID. These use standard frequency, but I'm not sure about the protocol.

Just finished programming my new switchblade, thanks for the instructions OP.

Car: 2004
Key:
FCC ID: KPU41788
IC: 4238A-41525
VISTEON NO. 41525

I ordered the switchblade from a vendor on ebay, it came with a blank key.
It took it to the dealer to get cut. I provided the little aluminum key code tag, and they cut the key for free.

programming key: you need 2 working keys and one new key.

programming the remote: you need one working remote and one new remote.

and then i just followed the instructions on the first page.

You'd have to contact Mazda support and give them the VIN and proof of ownership and they will ship it.

There exists 3 methods for programming fobs and keys.

The 2:1 method described throughout this thread
The single key sequence method which isn't clearly documented for any year
The JET programmer that can clone off a single key even without a car, but is really expensive.

Various people are trying to be the authority on the subject matter within this thread, and it just makes it a headache for people trying to save money trying to self-service their vehicles.

Alrighty, got a KeyFob in today, and wanted to make sure the numbers are right.

Viseton Model 41805
FCC KPU41805
Canada: 4238A 12076

It matches my old remote numbers perfectly, except the canada part is TW and the model number is 41848. I can't seem to program the new remote, so I figured the number check was in order. :P

EDIT: I got it to work, it came with a near dead battery and it wasn't giving off enough signal. Works perfectly. :)

Hi all,
I have a Mazda RX8http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.rx8club.com/#) 2004 04 plate, the key fob stopped working so i took it to my nearest dealer, they tested it and said it was faulty and i needed a new one, i have bought 1 and was wondering if i need to take it back to the dealer to get them to program it or if there is anything i can do myself, i only have one ignition key and only HAD one key fob, any help/info would be great, i have tried the method in the threads on here but never seems to work.

All off it works fine until the press any button on the remote part, when i press any button twice there is no response, i have two remotes which i bought from cars that they both worked on with no problems.

The above applies to any year. I used it on a 09 recently.

So I have done this procedure twice in the past with great success.

Today I program my new switchblade key for my newest 8 and when I do, it disables the other remote. Weird. So I do the process again and get the other remote done...and now the switchblade remote doesn't work!

So I do it a 3rd time and program BOTH. I think I found out why, the other times I had done it on previous 8s the other remotes were no where near the car. I am assuming if the other remotes are near the car and you program one, but don't touch the ones in range they become disabled.

I could be wrong but that would make sense considering what I just had to do. :)

ShellDude
05-22-2010, 02:23 PM
I'm pretty sure the procedure requires you to code all FOBs that you plan to use at the same time. If you don't include the FOB in the procedure then the car no longer knows of that FOB.

If you review the actual Mazda procedure there's a "loop" you stay in for each remote.

Interesting. On my last RX-8 I did the procedure with the "old" remote in my house and it still worked afterwards.

Oh well, all I know is both my fobs work and my new switchblade key works. That = me happy. :)

Hey all, thanks for this post. I'd tried it a couple years back when one of the fobs died (thinking it was battery or something) and it didn't work. We've obviously found that the fobs just die over time. So I used the opportunity to upgrade from the separate key and fob to the combined flip key. For two weeks I was manually locking and unlocking, it was pretty satisfying to walk away from my 8 and hear it honk again. Also, I found that my local home depot cut the blank for free, they would have charged for it if they supplied it, but since my flip key came as a blank they were able to cut it for FREE! After spending $40 on the flip fob/key that saved quite a bit versus going to the dealer. Thanks guys! :D

Probably not, they take a vendor database. Even locksmiths and small dealers have trouble getting them. The 2010 is still fixed code.

Most of these systems have a 1:1 method, it's just kept in obscurity for security reasons.

Remote Programming
• Ensure that all doors, trunk, and hood are closed,
• open the driver’s door
Carry out the operation below within 24 seconds:
• Insert key
• Turn ignition to the run position and off, 3 times (on-off, on-off, on-off)
• Leave key in ignition (off position, not lock or on)
• Push door switch, 3 times (The door switch is the little rubber one on the jamb of the rear door next to your elbow when sitting in the driver’s seat, which controls the interior lights.)
• Car will lock, then unlock automatically after pressing the door switch 3 times
• While the car is in unlock mode, Push 'Lock' on your newly acquired remote 2 times, (some suggest unlock, so try both)
• You will notice after pressing the Lock button on your remote, Car will lock, then unlock automatically again.
• Take out you key on the ignition and test your remote.

If it doesn't work, wait for a minute or so and repeat the procedure

NOTE: I DONT HAVE any existing remote. so no need to have an existing remote to do this procedure

I had my key duplicate @ lowe's for free...

:)

I followed one of the members advice, i had my room key duplicated for $2, and ask the lady to duplicate my car key on the switchblade key, at first she was hesitant to do it because she says it wont work, i told her i wont blame her if it doesn't work. Then she agreed to do it and told me, she wont even charge me for it.

:)

Key programming was really easy, less than 30 sec, and the key works like a charm.

But i still have to do something about the horn not honking when locking the car... anyone??

Sorry i just quickly skimmed through the first 5 pages but didnt find what i was looking for. Basically i have the advance keyless entry (06). So ii have the remote and the emerency key that goes inside. The key is not programmed by key i mean the emergency key thats got a chip on it. So only the remote is programmed. I recently got another key (one with chip). Is there anyway i can program the keys with the chips or do i need the dealers assistance.

I was wondering if it was possible to program those "Switch blade" keys from mazda to work with my alarm system? Or am i shit outa luck and can only use the key w/o the keyless entry part! lol I will assume its the second since it doesnt make sense that it would program. but figured maybe it was possible since i know nothing about electronics.

I think so, everything I've read claims that you need two separate keys that are already able to start the car before in order to be able to program more keys without the help of the dealership.

OK so when I bought my 04 a few years ago, it came with 2 keys and 1 remote. The remote worked fine and both keys started the car no problem. A few months back, the remote seemed like it was dying. Sometimes I would have to press the unlock button a few times for it to work and then one day it just stopped working all together. I figured the battery died, so I put a new battery in, and it still didn't work. I tried doing the re-programming steps but it doesn't seem to be working. All goes well up until I have to press a button on the remote 2 times. After I do that, nothing happens. I've tried multiple times with the same result. By the way, both keys still start the car no problem. Any ideas??

K1nG,They need for VIN number just for data logging. Mazda obviously does not want to give a RX-8 chipped key to anyone. There is no "special" key for your car. Most RX-8 key should be generatic for all RX-8 models *(4 port or 6 port)mercury273,Valet key should have a chip in it since it can start a car. So theoretically you can use it as a 2nd coded key.WDS DOES NOT code keys - it is simply (http://www.rersoft.com/tod-file/convert-tod-to-xbox.html) bullshit and the identification tag is at your ignition of your car (not the WDS). If so WDS can start your car without your key and why do they want you to leave your set of keys behind for service then . Hope this helps. It is just the solution for my problem, Thanks for your instruction!

FYI for those of you with the '05 key, or those replacing the remote... doing the key replacement procedure alone will not program the remote. To get that part working, you need to follow page 4 of the directions posted:

i have tried using the flow chart and i get to the part where the doors lock on there own after pressing the door switch 3 times . then i press the remote and nithing. I have tried several times thinking that the remote worked on a rolling code and would maybe take a while to match with the car but still no joy. I have tested that there is a signal coming from both of my remotes , they are both fine. Although can't say what the signal is. My remotes are visteon model No 41844 , do you or anyone else have any clues whats going on . I thought the battery had died because it stopped working all of a sudden but changing had no effect

you need AT LEAST 2 keys that are already cut/programmed (this can include the valet key) to program another key, after having it cut.

If you don't have 2 keys already that will unlock/start the car you will have to get the new key cut (anywhere can cut the key so it unlocks the door) AND you will have to get it programmed so it will start the car. You can get the programming done at a dealership or at select locksmiths.

Once you have those 2 programmed you can program another.

If your FOB goes bad you don't need any working ones to program the new one. All you need is ONE functioning key (fully functioning, unlocks and starts car). Use that key and follow the procedure to program the FOB.

If you have an '04 you CAN buy the switchblade FOB with FCC ID: KPU41788. It will program correctly.

my 04 remote went out. about to buy the switch blade. and i will have to do both the key encoding and the programing on the remote. since im getting a new uncut key. hope this will work.

Question: after click 3 times the door switch, i will click the "lock" button on the remote while is in the ignition correct?

As long as you do everything with in 28 seconds.

Addendum:
After two years without a working FOB, I finally bought a used set from eBay for $20.
Received it and programmed both in seconds. I only need blank keys and instructions to change it.

So i just recently bought an 04 used from someone, and they only gave me 1 key and 1 remote

i've been wanting to switch out to the switchblade one and in order for me to do so I would have to go to the dealer to get it reprogrammed with their machine

my question is, could i go buy another switch blade after that and reprogram the new 3rd switchblade using the mazda newly reprogrammed key and my old 04 key?

i've been hearing that the ecu picks up a different frequency and all that stuff

all the mazda dealerships around here in canada charge 50$ to program a key and 50$ to program the fob which is disgusting

I believe you could as long as you have two working keys (your '04 key and the newly programmed switch blade). If you look back a few pages, you will see the instructions how to program your third one.

Hello,

When I bought my Mazda RX8 (2005) the dealer gave me only one key (excluding the remote fob) and the spare key got lost by courier/post

Now I have a remote from a 2004 mazda RX8. Will I be able to re program in to my car?

just coded my own 05 key thanks guys. the transmitter was the hardest part but ill give good instructions right here.

1 sit in car

2 open driver door

3 put the key in move it
to lock to on
to lock to on
to lock to on

theres a small button in the door jam with a rubber stopper on it press it 3 times

now check that the door buttons still work and lock and unlock the doors.

then press any button on your key fob twice. now be patient cuz it takes like 5 seconds for it to first work.

MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS ALL QUICKLY!!!! 30 secs and under.

Hmm tried this and after pushing the door button the car locks and unlocks its self. Then push the button twice on key fob and push unlock button on the door...NOTHING so i close the door and car locks and unlocks its self twice. Hmmm is this not for a 2004?

Works fine for 2004's, your remote is probably dead. Mine died completely, so I bought a 2005 Switchblade key from eBay for $40, and programmed it. That includes the blank key and the remote, awesome deal! Then just get the key cut at a locksmith, program it yourself using the instructions in the thread.

The instructions for programming a remote FOB works perfectly for a 2004.

Is your Mazda a 2004? If so, buy the 2005 switchblade key. It works perfectly with the 2004 and it is cheaper, and includes the remote and key in one! Ordering them from eBay is usually the nest option. Get a new key, and try to get a 2005 one with the FCC ID of KPU 41788

If you have a different year car, then buy your respective key, and also buy the respective remote if you want the remote.

Now to program them: For the actual key, you will have to go to a special locksmith or to Mazda. The locksmith you go to will need to be able to program transponder keys. You might be able to find one that will do it for $75 or $50. Mazda will charge over $100.

To program the remote, just follow the instructions for programming the remote in the first post of the thread, that will work!

You do not need a working remote to program another remote. Just either 1 or 2 keys (I forget which, it's in the procedure in the OP.) I think I have heard of remotes just stopping working though, so you may not have any luck there.

My final 04 remote went bad last week (that was my third one)..and replacing the battery didn't fix it.. so I finally broke down and bought one of these coveted flip key remotes after 8 years of using the regular 04 ones. Cost about 50 bucks shipped (eBay)...and programming the new remote was effortless. Just have to get the key cut somewhere tomorrow.

By the way, I hope the paint on the lock/unlock button on these remotes doesn't fade as quickly as the paint on the old remotes did. That was something that really annoyed me about the old ones.

Hey I've got a question about programming the new key (not the remote) and I read through every page on this thread and noticed this was never asked after 7 years which is surprising.

I've got two old keys to my 8 plus this new one, but I haven't been able to find one of the 2 old keys. Probably in the garage somewhere or something. When performing the new key programming procedure, do I actually need both keys to be present in order to program the new key, or can I do it with just one of the old ones?

If you only have 1 key, you have a few options:

Go to the dealer, purchase a new key/remote combo, and have them cut/program it.
Go to the dealer, purchase a new key/remote combo, have them cut/program the key, and then program the remote yourself (if they want to charge you for programming the remote)
Go to the dealer, purchase a new key/remote, then find a locksmith that can "program a transponder key for a 2004 Mazda RX8", and have them cut/program the key. Then program the remote yourself.
Go online, purchase a new key/remote (cheaper), then find a locksmith (just like the step above)
Just call around for locksmiths and ask them if they can program transponder keys. You might be able to find one that will do it for $50. Otherwise, you're looking at over $100 at the dealer for just programming the key.

5. Buy a second normal key from the dealer, then buy a switchblade from the Internet, have it cut somewhere and program the key and remote yourself.

Just went to the dealer and they couldn't program any remotes.

I came back from my deployment and my car hadn't been started at all (wife doesn't love me), so it completely died. Ever since then the remotes haven't worked. The anti-theft system still works and the horn goes off if someone tries to open the door when it is locked. The red blinking key light blinks normally. I can get it into programming mode, but once you need to click the button on the remote, nothing happens. I tried it about 100 times and gave up on it and figured I just needed to get the dealer to do it. He tried it and did exactly what I was doing, which would have pissed me off if he had the "magic touch" or something. They're saying it is electrical issues or something, so I have to take it back in to get it diagnosed for 100 bucks. Cost me $75 to have them tell me they couldn't program any remotes and get a key cut/programmed for "free."

Sorry if I'm asking a very noobish question... (on the bright side I'm not starting a redundant thread!)

I have a 2005 Rx8 with only one key (no remote, no service keys). I'm not too concerned with adding more keys, but I definitely want to add a remote. As far as I can tell from this thread, I only need:

1 key, no pre-existing remote to add a new remote[/B]
2 keys to add a new key

So if I just buy a 05 rx8 remote from ebay, I should be able to program it using the steps mentioned in this thread using my single key?

I recently bought a 2005 remote for my 2004 off of ebay. I have now had 3 2004 remotes go bad on me.

Question on cutting the key. I went to Lowe's and the guys said he wouldnt do it since the key has a transponder and their cutter does not work for keys that have a transponder. He said even if he did cut it the car wouldn't start. Does that make sense?

Second I went to Ace (Pleasants) and they do not cut keys brought in from the outside only theirs, but they do cut keys with transponders.

The only other option is a specialty locksmith, but I was trying to avoid spending a lot of money just to cut a key.

Does anyone have any recommendations or if the Lowe's comment makes sense? .

Thanks

The Lowes guy is right, the car will not start even if they cut it because the chip has to be programmed to work with your car. However, it is probably bullshit when he said their cutter doesn't work with transponders because cutting the key has nothing to do with the transponder which is on the inside of the key head.

I only have one key, and my dealer charges $95 to have the key cut and programmed so I'm just going to order a 2005 key from ebay and take it to a specialty locksmith to have it cut and see if he can program it.

Anyone can cut the key, but if they screw it up, you're out the cost of the key. That's why some places won't touch expense keys like this. Programming the key is easy - if you got a compatible fob.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. I talked to the dealership about them cutting and programming my switchblade key since I only have one key and they will still charge me the $95 even if they try and claim it can't be programmed.

So should I purchased a normal 04 key from them and have it programmed and then just code the 05 key myself or what? Instead of buying the $60 04 key from the dealer is there a site that sells genuine replacement keys? I found this one but it says it can be made as a duplicate of my original key rather than it's own.

If the dealer could guarantee you that the 04 key will be programmed. See if you could get charged less if you ask for a Valet Key replacement. I haven't done it myself, but there's a few who have had the dealer cut the blade free of charge and programmed the switch blade with their pre-existing two keys. To get an accurate duplicate, you would have to provide the cutter your VIN, that what the dealer would do. Nevertheless, read the fine print regarding exchange/returns if the duplicate from that site doesn't work.

You will need to take it to the dealer to be programmed since you now only have one key.

Same situation that I am in. I took it to the dealer and they tried cutting it to match my current key and they fucked up so now I'm stuck waiting to receive the couple blanks I ordered online.

I went to Ace and had them create a new key for me for $75 instead of the dealer's $95 so now when I get my new blanks in and take them to Ace to get cut I can program my own key rather than going to the dealership to do it for such a high fee.

Hello,

I have purchased a used RX8 MIATA key keyless remote KPU41788 control for my 2005 Mazda RX8:

I tried programing the key last night, I followed the steps below:

All the above steps went well but nothing happened while trying the next step (below):

while the car is in unlock mode, Push 'Lock' on your newly acquired remote 2 times

Please advise what could be the problem? will I have to change the remote battery or something?

So my last original key fob for my 2004 rx8 died and I ordered a new one off of ebay.

I went through the reprograming procedure but I'm not having any success past the step when the locks cycle. I can get the locks to cycle after turning the ignition switch 3 times and pressing the door switch, but when I click the key fob unlock twice nothing happens.

I've reviewed all the threads and the instructions and I can't figure out what I'm missing. I know I have the right fob as they part number is identical (41848) to the old one. I did this once before on my own with success.

Any suggestions? I'm just trying to reprogram one fob. The post above makes mention of a different part number.

Yeah, I came across the same problem as you and I had no luck with the original FOB. You should have bought the newer switch blade instead. Programming it is such an ease...

I went through the reprograming procedure but I'm not having any success past the step when the locks cycle. I can get the locks to cycle after turning the ignition switch 3 times and pressing the door switch, but when I click the key fob unlock twice nothing happens.May be a dumb thing to ask... but are you sure the battery in the remote is OK?

As it was said, I'd have gone for a switchblade key as well... given the fact that the brand new, uncut key + remote combo is available for about $37 incl. shipping, that seems to be the way to go.

For an odd reason, once you run out of -or replaced the- battery on the 2004 FOB. The programmed keys will not work and seems that the dealer would need to reprogram it.

Ya, sounds odd to me as well. When I got my car it didn't have a fob, but an Ebay switchblade remote programmed no problem. I needed to then get a second key from the dealer to be able to program the key part of the switchblade, but I didn't even need that for the remote.

I have two original FOB that ran out of battery, replaced it with new ones and the FOB stopped responding. IR receiver at AutoZone shows that it works with the new battery, in the past two years, I've tried and tried with the same steps as programming the Switch Blade and the 2004 OEM FOBs doesn't respond. The Switch Blade did well only once. May be there is a different set of procedure just for that specific FOB that's different for the Switch Blade :dunno:

This may be a dumb question (it's been a couple weeks since I read this post front to back) but will any switchblade work or does it need to be a certain part # like the stand alone fob?

I ordered a spare key and a switchblade yesterday and should have them early next week. A local locksmith says he can code the spare so I can code the switchblade myself. He said if it doesn't work then there will be no cost to cut or the attempt to code them. That will save me a 90 mile trip (one way) to the nearest dealer.

For those with a switchblade and want to try, here's a post I found.

Removing the cut key is very easy. I managed to remove mine with a paper clip.

Most locksmiths will charge the same to cut a key, as long as it fits into the machine, which it should. I had no problem getting mine cut for $5.

Now, I ran a switch blade key on my '04, but never got it to program. i tried to follow the DIY procedure online, but never got it... so I can't speak as to what a deal would charge.

I received my spare and switchblade yesterday and got them cut after work and they both work like they are supposed to. A local locksmith was able to cut code them like he had said and there were no problems. He erased the previous keys in my cars data bank and programmed the 3 I had back in so the previous keys would not work. Saved me quite a drive and a decent chunk of money having it done locally. Check your local locksmiths if you are not near a dealer like in my case. You may be surprised.

I just bought the eBay switchblade key from eKeyless remotes. The quality is better than expected; I like how heavy it is. My RX8 is a 2004 model but I bought the 2005 key. Programming worked on the first try on all fronts using my one original, the valet and the new key. Easy peezy. Thanks for the instructions!

Any ideas?

Probably, because you have a different model. I think the one you bought may have been for a CX-7 or CX-9.

I figured out a few days ago that that was the case, that I had to hold the trunk and panic buttons down for them to work.

I'm afraid this question has been asked and answered but I haven't found it in these 19 pages:
Can I just reprogram one stock 04 key fob or do I need to reprogram all of the ones I have at the same time? (If I reprogram one fob, does that mean the 2nd fob has to be reprogrammed?) Not sure if this makes sense...

Here's a question.

A few years back, I decided to make a copy of my key, (just in case type thing) to leave in the sock drawer.

I went to the local dealer, purchased a Blank, for about US$20 (NZ $29). Then went to a key cutter, got the key cut. So far so good.

Here's the thing.

I tested the key. It doesn't open the door. i.e. I can't manually unlock the car with the key. However, it works fine in the ignition, if I use the remote to get into the car.

Am I right in assuming my key is a 'transponder' key, so wont let me in the car, but works in the ignition ok, because the way I got into the car was via remote (and that disabled the immobilizer) Or is it just a dodgy cut?

I wonder if I could start the car if I manually unlock using the original key, and trying the new key in the ignition...going to try that now, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dean
P.S. Buy Yogi Bear on 3D Bluray, Bluray or DVD. K thx.

I've always heard the problem the other way around. Usually having the key cut, but not programmed will result in you being able to access the car, but not start it.

I had the same problem. I think the door lock is a lot pickier as far as rough cuts go. My key works perfectly in the ignition, but if my remote battery dies, I'm screwed.

I think you will find that the ignition will be worn where as the door lock will hardly be used if you have remote access - I replaced a key and it wouldn't manually unlock the door.

It did work however after a good spray of teflon in the lock on the door

I tried the RD-7/WD40 on the locks (boot and door), and whaddya know, worked like a charm. Obviously, they haven't been used since 2003 and were stiff.

Next up is a switchblade style key/remote.

Good call, and thank you.
P.S. I strongly urge you all to go out and buy the Yogi Bear Bluray or DVD...or even better, both!

Good point. I have used my OEM key in the lock a couple times and it works fine, but a bit of lube might save my.. nevermind, not going to finish that sentence.

Hello, I have a problem here and hope u can help me. i have 05 rx8, bought it used with 1 normal key and 1 switch blade keyless entry remote.

i lost my keyless entry remote and after that i bought one keyless entry remote with un-cut blade from ebay, i programe the switch blade keyless entry remote and its working fine, doors, trunk and panic buttons are working properly. today i took that remote and my simple key which i got with my rx8 to mazda dealer to cut the blade (rx8 is parked in my garage because of snow). after coming back i try to start the car with new cutted blade but nothing, let me explain u in details, i gave the simple key and my newly programmed remote to dealer and he cut the blade.

i can open close the doors with that and when i put new key blade in ignition it turns smoothly and show all lights normal but when i try to crank the enging nothing happend and key light start blinking fast. the bottom line is "new blade doing everything but not cranking the engine"

Any helps?

Thx in advance

the new switchblade key blank is cut to fit the locks, but the transmitter is NOT programmed to the ignition. You have to take the car to them or a locksmith with the capability to PROGRAM A KEY, not the remote...a key. Please re-read this thread, in its entirety.

This is about the switch blade key FOB... You'd probably have to inquire through your dealer of the Visteon model and FCC #. Just provide your car's VIN.
