That on Mazda Canada's web site. In the owners page they have an f.a.q. that specifically states that using synthetic oil is not recommended, but using it will not automaticaly void your warranty. However they also state that if you use synthetic oil and it is the cause of the engine failure you will not be covered under warranty.
Very confusing. The manual says absolutely nothing at all in regards to synthetic oil, only the service rating and grade.
I know there is a law in the US that says if you are told you have to use a specific product to maintain warranty then that product must be supplied free of charge.
Is there a simillar law in Canada, and would it apply here?
They recommend not to use synthetic. We are told we will not be covered under warranty if synthetic oil is the cause. Is this not the same as being told you must use this specific product?
They dont state a brand but we are more or less being told we have to use conventional oil.
How about people who dont have internet access or a computer, and are using oil recommended in the owners manual? Are they not covered under waqrranty?
I am begining to question Mazda's intelligence.

I would think that the owners manual, not the internet be used for product selection/maintenance issues, even if it is directly from Mazda.
Mazda knows their product better than 2 million or so self professed experts on the internet as well as the old uncle's friend's cousin's sister's boyfriend who fixes cars told me that.....
As much as I was comfortable with using synthetic, I no longer will use it.
As good as I believe synthetic oil is, conventional oil changed on a regular basis will be just as good.
if synthetics were of any significant improvement over conventional oil, then they would be put in the car in the first place.
This is my opinion and what I am comfortable with. I know nothing about rotary engines and how they work. I am not an oil expert either.
Madzda knows more about their own cars than I do. So if they dont recommend synthetic oil, even though the manual doesnt not say anything about it, I will heed their advice.
All I know about my car is that it is a lot of fun to drive.

When Mazda says not to use synthetic oils, it is really just a blanket statement. Not all synthetic oils are created equal. I have used both Amsoil and Royal Purple and have never had any issues. Racing Beat also recommends Royal Purple. How can they prove that an engine blew due to synthetic oil? They can't. It's really simple, if you are using synthetic oil and ever have serious engine issues, change your oil to conventional before you take it in. they wouldn't know the difference anyways. Synthetics burn cleaner than conventional oils. This leads to less carbon buildup inside the engine. That isn't a bad thing. Synthetics are also much more resistant to breakdown than conventional oils. Again this isn't bad. Mazda has stated that the internal rubber seals may be affected by some synthetics. Since they would have to make a list of every oil safe and not safe, it is just easier to say not to use them at all. I will only use Amsoil or Royal Purple synthetics. If you really want to get crazy, buy some Idemitsu synthetic oil. Rotary Performance (rx7.com) sells it. It is the same synthetic oil used in the LeMans 787B.

Like rotarygod says........ After buying my 8 I asked MNAO about using synthetics since I've been using them since the mid-seventies with great success. Their answer to me was that Mazda has not done any testing using synthetics in the rotary engine so they reccomend against it. I'm sure not all would be harmful if any, but they're hedging their bet.
