Some products state they are for "clearcoat" painted cars and other's say for regular paint. For instance Zainos Z-2 for clearcoat and and Z-3 for regualr. Anyway...only the Brilliant Black is listed as being "clearcoat". Is this really the case? I'm getting silver should I buy Zaino's Z-3?

As far as I know, all paints that are on cars today are clearcoated. I have seen them in the body shops and they are cleared!

This question wasn't good enough to warrant any other replies? Was it that stupid of a question? Is it a fact that they are all clearcoat???

As far as I know... I can't imagine a car company making a car that isn't clear coated. It has so many advantages, and virtually no disadvantages. Plus, It really doesn't cost much more either.

I would believe that all colors have a clear coat applied. It offers a layer of protection against air pollutants and other envirnmental contaminants, and provides a lot of reflective properties. I would order the Z-2 for clearcoat. It wont be as abrasive as the Z-3.

One thing I've noticed on a few Mazda's I've encountered: for some reason Mazda doesn't like to clearcoat their red paint. My friends 95 Miata has no clearcoat. When waxing, the applicator ends up being totally red after he's done. 1999/2000 Protege's in Classic Red have no clearcoat either.

Red 97 and up Preludes at least did not have clearcoat on the red paint either. Just FYI. I'm pretty sure every other colour is clear coated.

Mazda's response:
Thank you for your patience while I researched your question about the clearcoat paint for the RX-8. All of the vehicles will have clearcoat.

Just FYI all clearcoats absorb some of the base paint, the degree of this happening depends on the color of the base paint and many other factors. So if the waxing applicator shows color it doesn't necessarily mean that he paint is not clearcoated.
