Canadian RX-8 Pricing announced

According to CanadianDriver, both the low power automatic and the high power 6MT will start at $36,795 loonies.

That is just simply amazing! I had expected the low power automatic to be around 36k but including the high powered version at that price is just simply amazing. Of course, there is a caveat to the pricing. There are two packages available: Standard and GT where the latter is priced at $39,595. With the Standard, you get cloth seats, 18-inch allow wheels, ABS, AC and fog lights. The fully loaded GT adds electrically adjustable heated leather seats, auto dimming rear view mirror, Torsen, DSC and Xenon headlamps. So the GT is really the fully packaged high power version but at just under 40k, its still a good deal.

Article can be found here Canadian RX-8 Pricing

How sweet it is! Actually, CDN car prices are almost always lower than US prices. The track 350Z is about $5k US cheaper than what you pay, something like an AMG SL55 could be $20k US cheaper than what you pay.

You guys are getting hosed.:p

I have been proven correct.. A while ago others were suggesting/arguing that the price will be in the mid 40's.. while my argument was that since the US version is $26K the Candian car has to be in the $39K area, especially in Canada to compete with other cars. Very nice.

for those of you that are thinking what i'm thinking:

Info from the US customs site

EPA Site

The only real fee that I see is a 2.5% tax due upon returning to the US. That would be 651.27

Total vehicle price: $26,702.25

I still like the sound of it

i'm sure you could find a way around the legalities. the problem your going to face is that canada is only going to get @700 for the whole year. so unless you bring your hockey gear and are prepped for i fight , i doubt you could get one anytime soon.

Hey is that a Canadian crack! :D We don't fight in hockey! :p

There was a thread about this sometime ago.. There were other charges and/or restrictions involved that made this deal not feasible..

Grimace,
So does this mean RX-8, or is it still Mazdaspeed Protege?

Bringing in the Canadian car might work. Of course the stuff will all be in kilometers, Celsius, and you'll have DRL's. Yuck. I suppose you could change the dash display, but how do you convert the climate control system and the trip computer to miles?

Don't know Jerome81. If I want to be financially responsible, its the Mazdaspeed Protege. But at that price its damn tempting to get into a RX-8.
I can't wait to see one in person at the T.O. autoshow.

Financial responsiblity is overrated... at least I think it is. I have never been financially responsible in my life. I have decent credit anyway. Go figure.

Remember only Mazdaspeed dealers are recommended or qualified to work on MSProteges during the warranty period, as it's a limited edition.

man, now i feel like we're getting screwed over. rx8 is a good deal either way, but 26k loaded would just be that much more awesome.

I'm not saying I'm happy about the price difference, but look at it this way: We here in the USA pay the least amount for gas to go in this car. So in effect if we all love this car as much as we say we think we do, we will probably be putting a fair amount of miles on it, that being said we will make up the difference in the long run on fuel costs (that is until we goto war, and then I reserve the right to retract my statement)

Tax!!!

First of all, I'm a first time poster here at the RX-8 forum although I've been following the forum for months now. Most the info comming out of here has been pretty accurate so far. Alot of great info so far!

This forum is pretty much like the Protege forum.

Anyways, I'm very happy with the price of the base 6 spd RX-8 in Canada. It's a steal for that price. I think the Nissan 350Z is over priced in Canada at $44000!

Don't forget that we pay 15% federal and provincial sales tax here on average in Canada. 15% of 37K is about $5500! That brings the price up to about $42000 CDN. I HATE sales tax! Anyways, with the tax in the equation, I think the price evens out. $42000 CDN is about 27-28000 USD.

That wouldn't be a problem, there are a few of 'em around the Toronto area.

Grimace - at this price ($6k CDN above your budget if I remember right) I think you should definitely get the RX-8.

Beg/borrow/st.. I mean finance that extra cost. Skip lunches, defer a vacation, run a 'buy me *****' type of scam etc to get extra money. Think of how envious you will be of every RX-8 you see on the road driving past your new Protege - you have been more enamoured of the RX-8 than most people on this site - the passion is so obviously there. Eventually (6 months from now ) you won't be able to take it any more and you will trade in the Protege (at a $5k loss) for a new RX-8 anyway. Minimise your losses and get what you want from the start.

At least that's how my thought process goes and what I would do...

Don't feel that way, since this is nothing new! Miatas have been cheaper in Canada for at least the past 10 years, and most other cars are cheaper here too - this is maybe the first one for which you've seen a direct price comparison?

There is a huge grey market in the US for imported Canadian cars, directly as a result of the pricing differences - something like 200,000 vehicles were imported privately to the US from Canada last year!! However, the manufacturers (more specifically, their distributors and dealers) are getting really annoyed with the practice, and are pressuring the manufacturers to help eliminate the practice. First thing - many manufacturers will NOT honour the warranty of a Canadian vehicle that's registered in the US. So, if you want to buy a Canadian RX-8 and bring it down there, be prepared to have NO WARRANTY. (If you're really close to the border and can bring it back to a Canadian dealer for warranty service... then go for it! )

Regards,
Gordon
