Herc, you got scooped by bwayout like a week ago... sorry dude, this is a doopie :D

i suppose that the Mini S would fall into a FWD sports car category, and i wouldn't say it's "the same" as calling a Civic a sports car (although a lot of people do), but more like saying a Civic SiR or Type R is a sports car, which i guess maybe you can... at least it's a sporty FWD compact.

In the strictest definition, the Mini S would not be classified as a sports car, due to FWD. However, given the fact that Road & Track recently tested it & the Mini S was the fastest car ever tested through their slalom (beating the Modena 360 and Porsche GT2), I would be willing to let that slide.

I believe the specific intent and capabilities of a car should determine if it could be classified as a sports car. Any Civic, other than SiR and Type R are FWD compacts. The SiR and Type R have a completely different intent and capabilities of the more pedestrian versions.

There will always be a gray area when it comes to classifying cars. I don't think it's neccessary to pigeon hole everything. Some cars do several things very well.
