I think that the RX-8 is in a class by itself. Many people are trying to pigeon hole this car as a sports sedan/salon. When the Mustang came along in 1964 the imitators thet came along in 1967 (Camaro & Firebird) were called "Pony Cars."
I think we will see a number of "sports" cars that try to do the 4 suicide door trick in the next few years.
I'm thinking that since some manufacturers call their 4 door trucks "quad cabs" that the name "Sports Quad" or "Quad Sport" would be fitting.
If you had to come up with a name for the immitators category, what would it be?

"Sports Quad" sounds really good to me, although I keep associtating "quad" with SUVs.
So, I thought "Tetra Sport" might work... except it sounds like packaging for fruit drinks... :(
Quadra Sport? Square Sport? Sport's Square? Four Sport? Practi Sport?
Maybe the "Only-an-idiot-or-somebody-who-has-never-seen-the-car-in-person-would-call-it-a-sedan" category? (:D )
I'll stop now...

That's my vote!:D
"Tetra sport" makes me think of little neon fish.

GT is the Kiss of Death in 2003-4!
The Autoweek article(Jan 31) dilutedly-categorized it as a "sporty-car", but that's painting it with a very broad brush, including it in the ranks of the Acura RSX, MS Protege, G35 (sedan/coupe), EVO, WRX STi and many FWD/AWD Euro others. Looks like an identity to pidgeon-hole it into evades the press. Must be the damn freestyle doors, ya think? You gotta love it when a still-born project comes along designed "outside the box", that leaves the press scratching their heads. It's called innovation. :)
It can lay the smack on most performance sedans in it's current form, yet is still balked at in a direct comparison to SPORTS coupes. Quite a quandary(word of the day). Will it take a Mazdaspeed RX-8 to assert it's true identity, or will a rennaissance of the almighty 7 assume that role? Enquiring minds want to know... :D

Umm.. Hasn't Saturn done this already, albeit with one side only and in the lower price range?
