View Full Version : Sevenstock 14: Aftermath thoughts
So how did everyone feel about the new spot? I for one heard a lot of things from various drivers. Schedule was thrown out the window in the beginning but other than that it was still sevenstock and it did happen this year .
ShinkaEvo 10-29-2011, 08:45 PM I like the new spot, yes, besides the early madness, but it was all good.
However the out door seems to be a little over packed, where the FC/FD parked which literary blocked all other rx in that section unlike where the rx2/3 and pickup parked. But that could just be me.
That and it kind of made me a bit sad to see just how many people were turned away due to the out lot being packed. If the place was a bit bigger I wouldn't mind it as a new spot
drifter_d 10-29-2011, 09:18 PM The location needs to be larger. Many nice rides who arrived late were relegated to the outside parking lot. Still, it was awesome to see so many rotary-powered rides in one place. Long live the rotary - long live Sevenstock!!!
RXZOOMM 10-29-2011, 09:46 PM The show was great as always.
I prefer Irvine.
Sorry to learn that people were turned away due to space!
The price of food was absurd!!!
The 11/2 hour wait to get in SUCKED!!!
Did I mention: The 11/2 hour wait to get in SUCKED!!!!

You nailed it - I paid waaaay more for food than for three tickets to get in! Those food vendors got straight up rich off us today...
ZumnRx8 10-29-2011, 10:34 PM Ill comment when i get back tonight
4g63Rotary 10-30-2011, 12:21 AM All I have to say is shuffling that %@#$ ticket box for the raffle is an absolute must for next year! And somebody needs get those awesome FD guys to SS a little earlier would have loved to see more of them indoors! Great show non the less!
tiltmode43 10-30-2011, 05:43 AM I feel like there was a bias towards the red tickets, haha.
But in all seriousness, I like the event but feel it could use a bit more organization and planning. Perhaps getting an idea of how many cars are going to show up before the event (similar to how there was a caravan count/thread, maybe try to have an overall show count?) so that the spaces can be organized to assure that everyone has their own spot and everything can start on time.
All things considered (funding, timeframe, etc.), I would say SSXIV was a success :icon_tup:
I would like to see next year's event done in a similar style!
rotary's dream 10-30-2011, 10:15 AM I have to complaint because NewCastle took 3 raffle but one of them is in my wishlist :tear:, And Why I didn't get the ignition coils :tear::crying:
J/K
The show was great, but the outdoor parking for rx7/rx8 is .........
I see only those rx8 on caravan was get in the party, all late was parking at gate 17 :sweatdrop
laythor 10-30-2011, 11:52 AM For a last minute first time effort i think it went better then could have been hoped for.
I have no doubt next year will be a smoother operation from start to finish.
ZumnRx8 10-30-2011, 03:21 PM I think that the NEW LOCATION absolutely PAWNS MNAO HQ 100x!
I was able to sit down and a table/bench when i got tired of walking
I was able to go inside to the Hall whenever i started getting too much heat from the sun.
I was able to use the restroom
I was able to take some awesome pictures indoor/outdoor in different lighting. It was amazing getting that Lexus Pearl FD outside.... SICK.
I liked-
- The Layout, perfect. Vendors all on the outside around the perimeter and all Rotary Owner vehicles ...just perfect in the center or off to the side like the oldschool were.
- The Vendors, they were awesome and compared to the now 4 SEVENSTOCKS I have been to, they came out in full force with their products/display cars/demos! :yesnod:
I didnt like-
- I didnt like how the fairplex or whoever was laggging it to open and start letting the cars in.... we were 2 hrs+ behind schedule. However, that two hour delay made SEVENSTOCK go by PRETTY QUICK and the day ended PERFECTLY right when I started to get bored/tired.:bigok: I actually think that we should start this event 2 hours later, please keep it at the same place. It was a much smoother Caravan from what I heard, everyone seemed to behave themselves this time around, it had a perfect layout and it would SUCK for the SoCal RX Club and everyone else involved to have to plan something new from scratch again. That doesnt mean that you guys (everyone involved) cant improve from this SEVENSTOCK which was awesome :yesnod: Maybe get some more of MAZDA Race Cars to come out to play :bigok:
- You got the cars out of there pretty fast, but I think it could have been done faster if they open up both roll up doors for the indoor cars like they decided to do at the last minute:bigok:
What Needs To Be Changed-
- Food. The Food was ok, but Real Expensive. $12 for 1 meal? Cmon! $2.75 for a .50 Bottled Water? I dont even think that MAGIC MOUNTAIN Charges that much. Next time just have INNOUT or TOMMYs bring their truck in, and we will be good, Because not only did the food SUCK but the PRICES made it taste THAT MUCH SHITTIER.
Arca_ex 10-30-2011, 07:38 PM All I have to say is shuffling that %@#$ ticket box for the raffle is an absolute must for next year! And somebody needs get those awesome FD guys to SS a little earlier would have loved to see more of them indoors! Great show non the less!
THIS!
Mix up the god damn tickets! There were about five people that were multi item winners, and they didn't have ridiculous amounts of tickets either! One guy won 4 times wtf!
I was one of the first people to buy tickets (I was with a vendor booth so I was inside at 5:30) so none of the winners were even within 600 numbers of me since mine were all sitting at the bottom. All the winners were all in the same like 300 or 400 ticket window.
Other than that and having my car shoved into a corner between our RV and the T-Shirt booth it was awesome. Definitely need a larger venue.
4g63Rotary 10-30-2011, 08:37 PM Oh and I almost forgot not being able to rev a hi-power rotary at this particular venue without the threat of being kicked out kinda sucks! But I have to admit having some shade and places to sit is huge! Not to mention the little fountain with a bunch of sick cars in front of it was nice photo business.
I felt that although it still was sevenstock, it just seemed like it was far from reaching the epicness it could of been. The indoor parking was a nice touch that made already good looking cars even better. The price of the food was one thing that made me not even think of buying any and +1 on the raffle being a bust due to less of a random choice.
If they can give us more space, get their act together on getting everyone in on time, and possibly getting a cheaper variety it'd be the perfect spot. That and for sure there needs to be a earlier set date posted.
Oh and I almost forgot not being able to rev a hi-power rotary at this particular venue without the threat of being kicked out kinda sucks!.
THIS!!!!!
I found it to be one of the dumbest things of the day, especially considering.....cough cough...vvv

ZumnRx8 10-30-2011, 10:51 PM ^ you are retarded.
^ you are retarded.
Because?
ZumnRx8 10-31-2011, 12:18 AM - What gurantee did SEVENSTOCK organizers, or whoever fronted the money have of getting their money back or breaking even since it was announced last minute with NO guarantee that people would show and pay the $30/$20 display fee, $5 general/passenger, $9 parking, or that they would even buy food at the event?
It could have been disappointing like SubieFest and be held in a parking lot under the hot ass sun. If yoy would know what real planning went into SS14, youd understand. It came out better than MNAO, where even there people got turned away and parked even closer together....
ZumnRx8 10-31-2011, 12:26 AM The last thing you want is someone REVVIN their car, slip their foot off the clutch in 1st and slam into your car that you just had painted.
Flashwing 10-31-2011, 12:56 AM First off, I hope everyone that helped organize Sevenstock this year knows that this was a great event and the fact that there was little time to get everything planned makes it an even bigger accomplishment in my opinion.
To begin, excellent move on the hotel. While the Doubletree's parking garage was kinda nice, the hotel this year was great and the fact that the price was exactly what we paid in the previous years was fantastic. Kudos to the organizers for getting that done.
The rules at the Fairplex did clearly complicate things but honestly the overall behavior of a few drivers in previous years' events have made it necessary that the fun is ruined for everyone. Every single year there are instances of burnouts and speeding by drivers who can't resist showing off. It sucks that cars can't be started and revved but I'd rather have those rules than risk a negligent driver doing something dumb and causing a giant mess. I'm sure the organizers could get the insurance for such a situation but we would all be paying $50 or more to show our cars.
I can't speak about the food because I didn't buy any.
I really liked the venue. The inside/outside mix is really cool and allows showcasing of the best of the best in a great way. Getting out of the sun helped AND restrooms made the experience much better.
While the complaints about turning cars away are legit, complainers need to take into consideration that no one knew what the participation level would be because of the last minute schedule. With as many whiners that came out of the wood work that the 29th date interfered with their ability to dress up like a slutty sponge bob I'm not surprised that the Socal RX group opted to not buy out the entire Fairplex. Still, I was told there was capacity for approx 300 cars and if there were more that's pretty crazy! Next year will be better I have no doubt.
From the vendor perspective I felt like everything was more relaxed. Once the cars were in and the gates were shut it seemed like it was smooth sailing.
Overall I thought the event was fantastic. Someone claims the event should be shorter but I found that there wasn't enough time as it was to see all the cars and catch up with all the people I've not seen in over a year. If you find yourself getting bored you probably didn't see the whole show or talk to many people. There seemed to be plenty to do in my opinion.
Next year...bigger, better, bolder. Frankly I think Mazda's "handling" of this event will be their loss and the community's gain. Can't wait till next year.

I may barely be fresh in the game but I've seen the dedication a lot of rotary owners have in their cars and the rx society as a whole. The whole having to pay thing yes sucked but did it stop everyone from coming? No. I think turnout was great for the time of announcement to date of was. Had it been announced sooner MORE would of showed and would of easily paid to get in but that problem was out of the hands of the planners.
Honestly I do not blame any of the socal rx people due to them making any of what happened possible. I do think if more of the fairplex was usuable things would of been better. It just seemed we the rotary community got a hole in the wall to the place and it just wasn't enough.
I for one loved the whole setup of how the cars were just everywhere and how there was actually some nice shade. Idk it was fun and all but just seemed unorganized from trying to get in, to parking, to staging. At mnao it didnt seem as many were pushed away at the door but then again there was a lot that Were let in as regards to those pushed back outside. A good maybe 1/4 or more were stopped at the door(what I heard so no exactly sure a round number). Maybe the time issue was a factor I don't know but hey there's always next year for more fun :)
The last thing you want is someone REVVIN their car, slip their foot off the clutch in 1st and slam into your car that you just had painted.
Well of course no on would but it just seemed all life was sucked out due to nobody being to get on the throttle and make noise...I repeat noise, not jackassery of speeding around the place. Hell they even clipped the vendors from getting on it(those 10 seconds the 4 rotor got up was pure awesomeness that i along with many would of loved more of).
All I hope for is something was learned by this years outcome, and this for sure
I have no doubt next year will be a smoother operation from start to finish.
Just a few things as FYI..
we had NO control or stake in the food sales. This is all FAIRPLEX. We were very disappointed at the prices the food vendor decided to charge.
We do apologize for the morning madness, but the FAIRPLEX people truly dropped the ball at the main gate and set us back a few hours. We were absolutely pissed!! We also had a few issues with our own folks, due to the overwhelming response... we were expecting a few hundred RXs, not the huge turnout we got. This was a year of firsts for SS, and like was stated, we had NO gaurantees on recouping the almost $20k we invested... we gambled the whole stack of chips we had, and more (borrowed and personal credit cards), to make it happen!
Every year we ask for volunteers, and very few peeps step up.. we added a few good people this year, but it seems like we never have enough folks willing to give of their own time for this!
I worked hard on the hotel deal and I think it was pretty fair.
With vendor display cars, there were over 300 RXs at this years event!
On the revving... sure we could have pulled a higher $5m+ insurance policy, but we didn't have the budget or inclination to hear cars revving all day and having to police people doing so... the clutch slip is one problem, but the worse is a belt snapping hitting a person (a kid) or a backfire burning someone... think about it!
There were lots of lessons learned this year, and "IF" it happens again, we will adjust accordingly.
We appreciate the input, as long as it is constructive!
Two months to pull this off... I'm proud of my guys! And we did it for all you, the RX community!
-Bern
FastRX8 10-31-2011, 10:05 AM I'd also like to add, for those talking about the cars that were turned away...
This venue held more cars than Irvine.
There were over 300 cars in the Fairplex, Irvine holds 260.
At Irvine, we are forced to park in the parking spots, and we can't park on any red curbs. (Anyone remember the year w/ the security guard threatening to ticket/tow cars?)
In the Fairplex, they had more freedom on where they parked cars. So, if we would have been in Irvine, we would have had at least 40 more cars turned away at the door.
This was my 8th Sevenstock. I think this venue, by far, was much better. The fact that we had shade, places to sit, some indoor areas for cars, and full working bathrooms was well worth the price.
BTW - If you didn't like waiting in line (I didn't mind because I took a nap), you could volunteer next year. The more volunteers, the quicker we get everyone parked, and...
Volunteers don't have to wait in line! Their cars get parked early :wink2:
lesper4 10-31-2011, 10:33 AM The Good:
-shade
-air conditioning
-seating
-food variety
-real restrooms
-secenic backdrop
-close (for me)
The Bad:
-no car reving
-the food prices
Notes:
-The wait was a little long but totally expected for a new venue especially considering indoor parking.
-prices of food and drinks, there were ways around that, that the rx trucks found out.
-we do need more space but considering the time frame this was put together, where and when great support from the community.
-In the past I have seen multiple raffle winners even when they do shake up the box.
All in all Sevenstock far excedded my expetations this year considerating Mazda was unwilling. The Socal RX boys and all the volunteers did a great job! Cant wait till next year.
Rotary13B1 10-31-2011, 10:39 AM I think Bern hit all the answers!
SS14 was powered by 10 Red Shirts and 6 volunteers... :smoker:
You know how many cars I pushed on Saturday?
I have one answer for the small # of negative Nancy comments.
Hit us up if you'd like to volunteer for SS15, if it happens... :)
but for now, THANK YOU ALL! THE PARTICIPANTS MADE THIS EVENT SO OVERWHELMING!!
-Andy
laythor 10-31-2011, 10:54 AM I do have a suggestion for Jedi for next year (if it happens)
A sevenstock volunteer caravan. We still meet before, drive together as a group and have a blast. Once we get there we're in volunteer mode and now we have 50+ red shirts to expedite getting everything going, and beam down to the surface and get killed within the first 60 seconds... oh wait, that's star trek.
Could also split into two caravans with the volunteers at the front and the non volunteers at the back. I for one have no problem helping out if it means sevenstock 15+.
lesper4 10-31-2011, 11:24 AM ^I second that would love to help! (Woot 3,000 posts!)
Hats of to the organizing, great job!!

^THIS
seriously...
Why are people acting like cars have never been turned away at 7stock before??
"OH NO! PEOPLE ARE TURNING AWAY CARS AT SEVENSTOCK!? THAT'S BULLSHIT! THAT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE"
not sure if you guys ever looked at the staging lots when sevenstock was at irvine but there were actually more cars turned away at Irvine than there were at Pomona...
yeah it definitely does suck to see such awesome cars (seriously, i honestly would have given my spot in courtyard for some of them) not get showcased but tbh, that's why a lot of us...and i mean A LOT OF US...wake up at the buttcrack of dawn (some of us don't even sleep) to insure that all of the work we put into our cars is seen by our peers at the biggest event of the year for rotaries.
another point i kinda wanna address is people assuming that the 7stock organizers can even get a remotely accurate guess on how many cars will be in attendance...
The socal caravan:
Q. How many cars signed up? ...57
Q. How many cars actually showed up? ...68
Every caravan that showed up to the socal caravan brought almost 3 extra cars...
Meanwhile on the 7club...
how many people signed up to show up?? ......?
seriously...the majority of the 7owners that i've ever met almost NEVER sign up to 'events' to let people know they're gonna be there...they just show up. That's pretty much been a fact since the 7club has existed.
why?? possibly because some of their cars weren't working until THAT morning. (btw, props to Kevin @ lucky 7's for gettin' his motor in at 2am - and 13x (ray) for gettin' their 7 goin' that day too...it really sucks that it didn't make it in tho :(). Most of these guys are truly dedicated to what they do and they're all so determined to meet the deadline that they never get time to log onto the internet n' keep up with the nonsense that goes on...they just wanna know the time n' place.
i guess my point is there is no way the 7stock organizers can ever really get an accurate guess on how many cars to expect...Every year has been a surprise as to how many show up - the only thing we can do as a community is communicate as much as possible and show up EARLY.
My opinion on 7stock 14: Fuckin' awesome. Loved every minute of it. Except for those 5 minutes i spent walking around my car trying to figure out why my trunk won't open...only to realize later that it was because my battery was disconnected...:banghead:
Phil's 8 10-31-2011, 01:31 PM The venue was more than I expected. Loved the indoor and loved the outdoor. Nice section around the fountain. I thought even the vendor area was great. The Hotel was very nice and a bargain for the price.
Not sure of what percentage of return from the entrance fee and vendor fees come back to SoCal but with the turn out they should have enough for next year. I thought that it was just too small a parking area and should be enlarged for next year thus having more $ in the pipe line. Not having a SS representative at the vendor set up area caused a small delay. Yes the food was pricey but the food at most venues is high. I wish that the food vendors would have opened up earlier
A lot of work went into this years event and it showed. Yes there were some snafus but overall it was the best experience I've have at a SS in years.
mike[piston eater] 10-31-2011, 01:52 PM people complaining about your cars not being in i parked in the visitor lot, all your cars were ugly anyway no reason to show em off, the good cars made it in and thats what matters. i iked the car setup because in the short timei was there i saw every car, were in every sevenstock before id sually only get to rx8s and 3rd gens so it was nice to see everything for a change
interesting, while everyone brings there car to show off what they have done since the prior year I never thought it was an all our beauty contest but a gathering of rotories and in my opinion the ppl that own and work on them
My car is not "courtyard" worthy but I paid the extra to help the cause, frankly I'd be interested in a non "show quality" car that drove hundreds of mines and what they are doing to get the relability out of their car
just sayying
mike[piston eater] 10-31-2011, 02:13 PM im not saying show quality, but atleast take pride in what you have, which usually isnt a problem with early rx and first gens, third gens. mostly directed to all the crappy fc's i saw in the visitor lot
I think for me it was just the spacing. Everything seemed somewhat cramped. As atilla said, I as well would of given my spot up had i known the spacing was so limited. It just seemed being as the place from the outside seemed huge, everyone would have made it in.
I respect EVERYTHING the socal crew did to make this possible because without them there wouldn't of been a sevenstock to talk about. As Bern said, as long as points are constructive any opinion is welcome. I have not bashed nor do I plan on bashing anyone. All im putting here is my own opinion of what I saw Saturday.
I know like Bern pointed out there is the $ gamble in putting on an event location, shirts, insurance etc etc etc etc and 99% of the time organizers will fall short of even breaking even.
Who really would know what the turnout would be like it was later in the year and halloween weekend.
I will be meeting with some of our locals later this week and we'll toss around ideas for SS fundraising (we are already doing so for WHiV5). If each group raised say 1k and donated to the SS cause it would add up fast and not only insure there is a SS15 but enable it to expand. It is never too early to start :)
mike[piston eater] 10-31-2011, 02:36 PM amen, to that, I'im willing to volunteer to help coordinate crowds next year, wish i could help beeing involved in the meetings and all that but i probably cant,

Rotary13B1 11-01-2011, 10:07 AM no need to quote: Atilla's Post #15 SUMS IT ALL UP. It was madness in the morning, then Jedi shows up and we go to level Crazy! But we got you guys paid and to the staging area pretty quick, everybody actually read the FAQ, and gave correct change, inside outside. BAM done!
Yeah, Figs (Post#35), that area was cramped... you know why? I turned away 40 cars at the payment gate, and I was packing them in to see if we could let more cars in! = )

jewagr007 11-01-2011, 12:58 PM Only negative thing I have to say about the event is that I didn't get to go...
Didn't have enough time to plan the trip. Would LOVE to attend 15, if it happens, but I will have to start planning now...drive from Houston, TX would require me to take vacation from work...which would not be a bad thing!
Props to all that help make these things happen. I for one know the time and effort that goes into planning large events like these...and it isn't easy!

For having to change their plans last minute from something they've done for years, I would think it was a great turn out. It shows dedication that they still put the show on out of their pockets and that so many people did still show up, regardless of all the crazy fees and location change. I was happy to donate back at the booth :) I also knew it wasn't their fault that the venue was so overpriced with food & parking.. that's pretty much the case for those types of places.
But hey, what do I know.. I'm just a newb.
zoom44 11-03-2011, 02:16 PM hello newb :) good job on making it to 7stock!

DiamondEyez, we had to scrammble and put in a ton of work to make it happen but so far most of the feedback has been pretty positive.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the event as well. :)
Flashwing 11-03-2011, 03:22 PM I'll say this much in retrospect...
Anyone who feels overly critical (posted or not) should look earlier to see that a $20,000 (that's twenty thousand for the kids at home) dollar gamble on this event. Loans, AND personal debt! This wasn't someone else's money...it was money of those who are part of the Socal RX group. If you think you could have done a better job I hope you're willing to make a $20k bet on that.
It is one thing to spend even just a couple grand to put on a car show which is already very difficult to do as my local car club experience has taught me. It is another thing to spend 20 g's in advance hoping that the turnout in cars and spectators will make up the difference.
Again, great job guys. Ballzy.

Believe me I know exactly how it goes. We (Vegas 8s & Sin City Rotary) are fortunate that the sponsoring hotel covers the insurance for our event as part of the room costs. All other costs are out of pocket with the hopes that the turnout will good. Personally I was impressed with the event and the organizers professionalism.

Oh you did not know that Jedi's ride is really a crossfire in disguise?

He doesn't really own that BMW as a D.D. It's a Crossfire.
Neiron09 11-05-2011, 03:13 PM This wa my first SS and to be honest I was overly satisfied with it! So we had to wait a bit to gy inside big deal. I spent that time getting to know my fellow 7 & 8 owners. The waiting was like already bein at the show. I looked at all the others waiting and really enjoyed myself. As for turning cars away that happens at any show I've been to. That's why you get there early. Its first come first serve no shock to me. Sure there were a few snags, but it was a large event it happens. Way to go those who planned and helped put this on!! I look forward to a future SS and what it will bring.

Now this is what SS is ALL ABOUT! Thanks for coming out Neiron09, and reminding us why we do this!!! :)

After all the madness that happened I will say this...
Can't wait for Sevenstock 15 :D: I know it'll be bigger, better, and there will be plenty of support from the community. To Bern and the rest of the organizers :patriot: thanks for keeping this event alive and strong

sounds like a Win to me, save that juvenile behavior for the HS parking lot, might even have to consider coming out next year myself now ... :)
9krpmrx8 11-14-2011, 01:49 PM I'll be there next year for sure. I might even skip WHIV for it.

What's wrong with doing both? They are far enough apart. Sure hate to see you miss WHiV5.

ZumnRx8 11-14-2011, 04:15 PM I hope the So Cal RX club and/or whoever funded the event at least broke even for the event. It was awesome. THANKS AGAIN! :bigok:

Sometimes, taking a $20k gamble in something you believe in with people who believe in it too pays off.

Without getting into the specifics, you clearly know the pain of when it all gies to poop too. Optimism alone never guarantees success. Not hedging your bet at the wrong time can be disastrous in the most final sense.

You can't make a hedge bet when you are all-in.
