Former owner of 1st and 2nd gen RX's . Looking to buy the RX8 - BUT, concerned about the HP issue 238 or 250? What gives? Is there a problem? Help!
RX8_GT 02-28-2004, 10:50 PM Drive it - like it - buy it.

eccles 02-29-2004, 12:40 AM None of us can convince you, and the horsepower number is just that - a number. Go drive the car, and if it doesn't grab you by the boo-boo, don't buy it. But it will, it will. :)
Overport 02-29-2004, 03:11 PM Automatic has 197 hp.....Manual has a well 238 hp. its pretty damn fast. especially when its modded.
mskern77 02-29-2004, 03:43 PM If I were you,I would be more concered about the flooding issue, unless ofcourse you need 238hps for everyday driving!
fluque 02-29-2004, 04:08 PM drive it ..........
Shocka 02-29-2004, 04:49 PM u had 2 previous rotaries and need convincing about purchasing this one???? go get a 350z with the GReddy Tuirbo kit its alot faster
350z are almost as poopular as civics in my area! ive only seen a handful of 8s!
CanadianRX8er 02-29-2004, 07:13 PM I read about it, I thought about it, I drove it, I bought it yesterday.
Not much else to say.... Go give it a run.

Fast enough for me. Maybe too fast :p
DemonRX-8 02-29-2004, 09:13 PM Drive it and you will love it. Roll the windows down as you do, because all other concerns will be going out of them. Life is great at 9000 rpm! :D

Not bad at 7500 either... had the moon roof open today for the first time. Big fun!
Berni 02-29-2004, 10:16 PM Freakin no brainer find a dealer that will let you actually drive it and you'll want to take it home.
My test drive was in post falls ID the saleman let me drive it how i wanted through some tight mountain curves very nice. That was in July or Aug. I just need to work some thing out money wise got mine 28 Feb 04. and i love it love it love it.
Whenever i see it parked while in a store and the like i can't believe it is mine. the car is amazing. If you want an impressive hp number buy a Ford cobra SVT (390hp) (wup up dee doo) and that is about all you can say about that. the RX-8 is a great car get out there and drive one.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend the AT owners. 7500 rpm ain't so bad either! :)
ballplayer 03-01-2004, 12:15 AM Went to Cleveland Auto show today. A sswweetttt RX on display, but the saleman told me that their is a starting and shutdown "procedure" for the car. If I'm paying $33K for this car, why do I have to be concerend about backing the car out of the garage to wash it and be concerned about "warming it up first" in case I flood it? Sales rep told me that that little problem is an $800 fix because the spark plugs are shot when flodding occurs!
Geez, I never should have sold my 2nd gen, but got married and wifey said time for a family car, should have backed over her instead?

Your sales rep is making things up in an attempt to sound smarter than he is. I was first quoted $150 for a deflood repair by my local dealer, a price which did not include the tow from my house. When I contacted Mazda by phone, they confirmed that the tow and repair were covered under the 4 year/50,000 mile warranty... Mazda has been very good about providing customer care for when flooding happens. When I asked whether I would continue to be covered if I flooded more than once, they wrote me a letter assuring me that flood repairs are covered for the length of the warranty. See Got My Letter: Flooding Covered Under Warranty! (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20065)
Preventing flooding is not hard... in my case, my wife had never driven the car before and just forgot the shut down procedure for when the car is driven very short distances. The only people who should make flooding a deal breaker are those that have to turn their car over to a valet regularly - and even then it should only take a careful warning.
One of the things people should consider when buying a car is the manufacturer's attitude... Mazda's been great on this. I'm betting the 2005 model has an ECU fix and hoping that the same changes will eventually be made in our vehicles as well... I also think that if I ever stall again I will be able to get it started myself without a tow. I suspect charging the battery may have gotten my car running, but I didn't want to do anything to the car, having had it only a few weeks.... I've got a bit more courage now.
Sue Esponte 03-01-2004, 03:14 PM Megareds, that's extremely reassuring. I couldn't agree with you more about the attitude of the manufacturer.

I'll try to explain the "special" start-up and shut down procedure....
When you get in the car, put the key in the ignition, put in neutral, turn the key to the "on" position until the car starts, remove hand from the key, release parking brake, drive to your destination.
Shutdown....make certain the car is stopped, engage parking brake, turn the key to the "off" position, remove the key.

You forgot a minor but important step:
"check temp gauge to assure temp is normal, or wait until temp gauge reaches normal"
RXR8TED 03-10-2004, 02:05 PM Dude if you concern about hp, then get a bmw the one with a 450hp!...
The RX8 she is a beauty to drive, handeling is superb... she is sweet ride, test drive it and you wont worry about hp anymore.
The driving instructions missed another part: Zoom-Zoom-Zoom

Hey doctorr - what gives with the out of place seatbelt icon on your photo there? Just curious if that indicates that when the tach gets to that spot all the passengers jump out?
