View Full Version : DIY: Black out emblems without taking them off
Mazda_RX804 04-06-2011, 02:14 AM Hey guys,
Came across this on another forum, and I plan on pick up a can of this soon at Home Hardware. They come in various colours, and you can paint anything with it. Ive seen people do roofs, rims, emblems, trimming etc.. And the best part of it is, if you dont like it you can peel it off! Heres the link...hope this thread was helpful:)
http://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-second-generation/527165-diy-matte-black-emblems-plastidip-no-emblem-removal-required.html
Good protection for rims also if you track and I hear they withstand alot depending on how many coats you do.

Rotary-RX8 04-06-2011, 08:34 AM Yea this stuffs good. I believe they only sell black and grey at lowes and home depot. No other colours, i might be wrong though :dunno:
RXeckless 04-06-2011, 12:46 PM Why he peeling it off his wheels, did he paint the tire? LOL
Just buy a set of track rims!
Youwonder 04-06-2011, 12:54 PM That is pretty cool I think I might pick up a can myself to test this out..
MrAdam5 04-07-2011, 02:39 PM That stuff is crazy. Went out and got 2 cans today, gunna try out that emblem black-out. Probably would work as good protection on rims when storing them too.
REV-illusions 04-07-2011, 09:08 PM hrmmm... I wonder if you could use this stuff in the rear fenders... maybe protect against rust by sealing it out.

Let me know how it goes. Maybe you can help me do mine
Mypashaw 04-08-2011, 06:39 AM Great find! Thanks for posting. I'll be doing mine and will post some pictures when completed.
MrAdam5 04-10-2011, 10:28 PM Let me know how it goes. Maybe you can help me do mine
I did a test spray on some cardboard and a penny today to see how it sticks. I was able to peal it off both the cardboard and penny without any residue being left behind and it didn't tear the cardboard at all. Its also quite stretchy.
Just follow what that Lexus guy did and you shouldn't have any problems. I'll post pics when I get around to doing mine.
Mazda_RX804 04-10-2011, 10:44 PM **didnt realize you were from alberta lol
FoxeyL8y 04-10-2011, 11:13 PM Sweeeeeet. Imma do this pronto to my mx-5
mrl84 04-11-2011, 09:09 AM did mine this weekend, worked like a charm.
Rotary-RX8 04-11-2011, 09:29 AM What do you guys think of plasti dipping stock rims green or blue on a BB ??? :suspect:
Mazda_RX804 04-11-2011, 10:25 AM did mine this weekend, worked like a charm.
Any pics that you can share with us?
ttame16 04-11-2011, 10:46 AM i might try plastidipping the stockers this weekend.
s3raphic 04-11-2011, 12:19 PM I would love to see pics - for those who have done this.
mrl84 04-11-2011, 12:52 PM Any pics that you can share with us?
once i get them off my phone ill post them up.
Wheels416 04-11-2011, 05:32 PM gonna try and pick up someof this on my way home and might play with it tonight, the weather is great outside.
Will let you guys know how it goes... Has anyone seen the Grey colour for sale though?
I only see black, yellow, blue and red.
paimon.soror 04-11-2011, 05:44 PM If anyone can Photoshop a black mica with black emblems that would be awesome
Mypashaw 04-13-2011, 08:32 PM Just did mine and it turned out really good. Really easy to do. I'll post some pictures of my black R3.
paimon.soror 04-13-2011, 08:58 PM Good deal, looks real easy, question is if it will look good on my color
mrl84 04-14-2011, 09:16 PM heres some of my pics of when i did mine, sorry they are crappy cell pics and it was dark when i finished...
rendar 04-16-2011, 09:01 AM hmmm interesting for sure! I'd like to see more pic's though. anyone try red on red emblems?
Mazda_RX804 04-16-2011, 01:06 PM ^i dont that would be a good idea cause the PlastiDip red will not match Velocity Red too well.
Youwonder 05-05-2011, 08:50 AM This thing is fun to play with after I did me emblems I did my roof just to see how would it come out.. it came out not bad but some spot was wavy so I took it off. Im going to try it again this weekend. Ill post pics later
Mazda_RX804 05-05-2011, 12:46 PM ^sick i cant wait to see how the roof turns out
Mypashaw 05-07-2011, 07:59 PM Sorry for the delay, here's the pictures.
sebarx8 05-07-2011, 08:31 PM it could be use on the front bumper ???? if yes say good bye to the blue tape!!!
Youwonder 05-07-2011, 10:38 PM heres some of mine, will take more later sorry for the crappy iphone pics.. the roof was a bit dirty from my car cover..

A+ bro
Juansito 05-15-2011, 02:46 AM HOLY SHIT IM BUYING THIS ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gonna do my roof and rims!!!
ejeetology 05-15-2011, 09:33 PM hey guys, did this to my car. with both eyes closed, i braved putting flat black spray paint without masking, and holy crap. IT WORKED!! the overspray peeled up beautifully, and with some mcguiars spray detailer, got the remaining items that did not "peel off".
the emblems were cut nicely. it hugs the curves, so when you peel it up, it will not take it off the emblem. you are also able to peel up the middle with ease. did front, and all back emblems.
next, i did the rims. my god, it worked! overspray lifts off of tires easily, and gives it a nice boost if you clean and spray the inside of the wheel.
all in all, the project turned out great. thanks for the heads up on this!
XoxidE 10-19-2011, 02:56 AM Whats a good product to use to get this plastidip off. Not from the actual parts that i painted but from little bits of plastidip that the wind managed to get all on the side of my car. (by little i mean alot of little bits), rubs off with my thumb with alot of pressure but also manages to rub off my fingerprint. No bueno. Any suggestions?
Mazda_RX804 10-19-2011, 07:34 PM maybe a goo gone? nexttime take extra care in preparing, or dont do it on a windy day
edoloman24 10-20-2011, 01:33 PM Works amazing plastidip is sick I might do my rims I already did my emblems
Ravioli 10-20-2011, 03:40 PM I used this on my rims.
Worked out really nicely for about 4 months.
They're getting kinda dusty now....

cant u just respray them
Mazda_RX804 10-21-2011, 06:07 PM ^^you can, you just need to peel the old stuff off first. The more coats you do, the longer it should last
40thanniversaryrx8 10-23-2011, 12:04 PM awesome post! cant wait to do this! ive been wanting to for a long time but all the work of removing emblems and such didnt seem worth it. and i can peel this off if i decide i dont like it! great idea and great post, thanks!!
Houston Sooner 10-23-2011, 03:06 PM I did it on my daughters RX8 and it still looks great and has even been through the car wash several times.
Xclusive_40thAnvRx8 10-24-2011, 12:46 AM black out emblems? i thinks thats pretty cool but say you dont like it, you can just peel that "paint" off?
batangisip89 10-24-2011, 07:47 AM black out emblems? i thinks thats pretty cool but say you dont like it, you can just peel that "paint" off?
Yep, thats the idea. :D:
Ravioli 10-24-2011, 10:17 AM Best way to do it:
Two heavy coats of plasti-dip,
Two coats of black spray paint
and then a coat of clear-coat
= car wash safe!
Mazda_RX804 10-24-2011, 05:53 PM ^ for the newbs, that is for RIMS, not EMBLEMS lol dont uses the black spray paint!
Xclusive_40thAnvRx8 : Plastidip is a rubbarized paint formula, it maintains elasticity. So when your bored of it, take your finger nails, and peel that s*&^ off :) Hope you learned something.
edoloman24 10-25-2011, 11:42 AM Best way to do it:
Two heavy coats of plasti-dip,
Two coats of black spray paint
and then a coat of clear-coat
= car wash safe!
if you spray on top of plasti dip with other paint can you peel everything off clean??
mavictb 10-28-2011, 05:32 PM so here are a couple pics I took with my phone of my blue 8 with this DIY completed.
Sorry for all the dirt lol it need a detail and some touch up for sure but I haven't got around to it lol.
dirkyd3rk 10-29-2011, 04:31 PM I love this thread. Went out and picked up 2 cans from lowes and went to town without even taking them off!! If i do want to debadge whats the easiest way? I just wanna apply a few more coats. Anyone else in here curious to spray their headlights? Lol
dirkyd3rk 10-29-2011, 04:33 PM Sorry for double post i haven't figured how to edit post on mobile web. I have HID's im.wondering if the light would still shine through a plastidip coated headlight?
T-Mar 10-29-2011, 07:40 PM heres some of mine, will take more later sorry for the crappy iphone pics.. the roof was a bit dirty from my car cover..
Have you ran your car threw a car wash to see if it has stayed on there? Or would it stay on if you clean your car and rub with soap or does it stay?
Wingznut 11-01-2011, 02:27 AM Tested this out on my front 'M' emblem, and it was as easy as the DIY says... And looks good too.
I'll post some pics this weekend, after I do my trunk emblems. :-)
Mazda_RX804 11-01-2011, 04:08 PM Have you ran your car threw a car wash to see if it has stayed on there? Or would it stay on if you clean your car and rub with soap or does it stay?
Ive had a pressure washer right in front of it, and it doesnt peel off. Im glad to hear a lot of people like this thread and have had good success with it. Just curious if it would be a good idea to make it a Sticky thread?
40thanniversaryrx8 11-01-2011, 05:07 PM i think someone should totally try headlights or tail lights!! that way i dont have to.
Mazda_RX804 11-01-2011, 05:28 PM my buddy was trying to paint his silver car white, but the cost would be too high lol but, he sprayed over his side marker in white, and you can still see the light flashing.
T-Mar 11-02-2011, 07:30 AM Thanks, thinking this might be next thing try and do after rb intake and black halo racing ignition, school is kinda taking up a lot if time, but break comeing soon. Any pics of your buddy after he did white out?
Wingznut 11-02-2011, 07:45 AM There's no way you'd see light through the black. You're better off with the paint that's made for that purpose.
Mazda_RX804 11-02-2011, 07:30 PM Best and cheapest method to smoke tailights is using LaminX, dont use that spray on VHL(i think its was its called), if u do it wrong you will ruin your taillights and light will not emit through.
Brettly2005 11-06-2011, 06:48 PM Im for sure trying this with any and all surfaces possible when I get back home.
Thanks, thinking this might be next thing try and do after rb intake and black halo racing ignition, school is kinda taking up a lot if time, but break comeing soon. Any pics of your buddy after he did white out?
Same situation man.. I'm at school, and I have my RB REVi waiting for me back home.
T-Mar 11-07-2011, 06:49 AM Lol, gotta wait for a weekend of no homework and test and get it put on, mines been ordered, just waiting on delivery
SoliceDreamer 11-08-2011, 01:16 PM nice, im going to pick up some cans this weekend...maybe white?
Ravioli 11-08-2011, 02:54 PM nice, im going to pick up some cans this weekend...maybe white?
Plati-Dip comes in white?
Learn something new everyday.
Mazda_RX804 11-08-2011, 06:09 PM plastidip comes in Black, White, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Clear
RotaryBoi 11-08-2011, 08:15 PM Bought some black PlastiDip today. When my black winter wheels come in, I'm doing my emblems. Pics when I'm done. =-)
mavictb 11-09-2011, 10:28 PM used the pressure washer on the car today (low pressure) and it didn't hurt the emblems at all.
Ravioli 11-10-2011, 08:55 AM I hate how if you plasti-dip your emblems, they dont match the still shiny rotary accents.
And if you plasti dip your accents, you just look retarded lol
Wingznut 11-11-2011, 02:00 AM Finally got around to doing my trunk emblems today. I'm happy with they way they turned out. :)
RotaryBoi 11-13-2011, 11:02 PM Did mine last night. They turned out pretty well. I think I'm going to re-do them with a couple extra coats though...

Brettly2005 11-21-2011, 01:20 AM Just plasti-dipped my emblems, side markers, and rims for fun. They all turned out really well so Ill post some pictures this week. Its raining pretty hard outside and that didn't affect how the plasti stuck at all. I even drove in the rain and it's still on there perfectly. Oh and I got the REVi on finally :)
RotaryBoi 11-21-2011, 11:03 AM ^ curious, how well can you see the light on the side markers? I have mine tinted with 3M film, but still wondering...
Brettly2005 11-22-2011, 09:22 PM I plasti-dipped everything I could just for fun
Heres the back emblems:
All the emblems were done with two coats, letting dry for about 45 minutes each coat.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2944.jpg
I forgot to take a pic of the front emblem, so heres a far away shot when wet sanding my headlights.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2955.jpg
Here's what the rims look like after about 3 coats:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2946.jpg
Rims and Emblems:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2943.jpg
To do the rims all I did was tape off so the plasti wouldn't get on the paint, and then put newspaper behind the rims so the brakes wouldn't get covered. I didn't mask off the tire because it just peels right off after a run with an exacto knife :wink2:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2936.jpg
Be careful when removing the paper from behind because some may stick to the rim and pull off part of your work. This happened to me, but I just touched up afterwards. (There wasn't enough spray to re-mask, and the excess just came off while driving.)
Hope this was helpful!
Brettly2005 11-22-2011, 09:27 PM ^ Sorry about all the links... I don't know why the pictures just didn't post.
^ curious, how well can you see the light on the side markers? I have mine tinted with 3M film, but still wondering...
It shows through, but not very brightly. Heres what I got. (Only one coat on the corners)

royalfitz 12-06-2011, 02:45 PM Im a new owner and one of the first "mods" i did was plasti dip the stockies :biggthump

Thank you and thank you!
Soon to be plasti dipping all of the emblems. My only worry is getting the plasti dip out of the small areas like the inside of the letters and what not.
mrl84 12-06-2011, 04:37 PM My only worry is getting the plasti dip out of the small areas like the inside of the letters and what not.
i used wooden tooth picks, they worked well.
Brettly2005 12-06-2011, 06:10 PM Yea those work well. Be cautious if you use an exacto knife
royalfitz 12-06-2011, 06:29 PM i used wooden tooth picks, they worked well.
What about the paint? did you have any problems scratching it?
Wingznut 12-07-2011, 05:01 AM What about the paint? did you have any problems scratching it?Nah, a wooden toothpick won't scratch the paint (unless you are completely careless.)
royalfitz 12-07-2011, 07:43 AM Nah, a wooden toothpick won't scratch the paint (unless you are completely careless.)
Sweet ill try this later today after the rain and ill upload a picture!

yeah what he said, i had no problems. also the tooth picks i used had a pointy end and a rounded end, the rounded end actually worked better.
MadDog2020 12-08-2011, 11:14 AM I'm trying this out this weekend.
Has anyone tried clear coat over the emblems after applying the plasti?
I would think it would not cause any damage?

You should be fine. A glossy clearcoat would probably be nice if you don't like the matte finish. Worst case scenario is the clearcoat doesn't break along the edges of the emblems and peels off the desired plasti-dip with it. Try it, let us know...
Brettly2005 12-08-2011, 12:30 PM Clear over the plasti dip works great just don't go too heavy on it or it can have a yellow hue. Post some pics when finished

Awesome, thanks and I will!

Good to know! I'm going to get extra cans of Plasti in case I get some failed attempts.
I've never used the stuff so don't rightly know how much I'll need.
xexok 12-08-2011, 12:56 PM Wouldn't the clear coat make it kind of hard to peel it off properly in the tiny crevices like the rx-8 emblem has?
Please post pictures of it on your white car when you finish.
RotaryBoi 12-08-2011, 01:22 PM I've never used the stuff so don't rightly know how much I'll need.
One can is plenty for all emplems. Maybe buy 2 if you're REALLY concerned about failing. Ans as I and xexok mentioned, the clear may make the plastidip not want to break properly or peel in the small crevices. Looking forward to seeing pics!
Brettly2005 12-08-2011, 02:04 PM I used two cans and got my emblems, side markers, and rims all with multiple coats. The only way I see clear coat working on the emblems is if you take them off... but im interested to see if it would work with em on
MadDog2020 12-08-2011, 04:43 PM First attempt tonight is FAIL. I sprayed too much Plasti first coat. Looks like I need to do light coats and progressively hit my desired coating/saturation.
Found a nice vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FchIWF8Vi2Y&feature=related
I'll be attempting this again (front emblem only) tonight and see if the clear coat works as well.

The first coat should barely cover the emblems. Click the link on the first page to the Lexus forum, that will help too.

LOL I did and looked at it like 5X but for some reason that aspect eluded me.
I am so not anything automotive/handy inclined :dunno:
Well, that being said, should I somehow pull this off with my inability to do anything right, it means ANYONE can do it!! LOL!
Brettly2005 12-08-2011, 05:03 PM Haha physical labor inept just like Jaremy Clarkson. I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually lol
Wingznut 12-08-2011, 05:26 PM As with pretty much any painting, PATIENCE is your friend. I forced myself by setting a timer. I threw on one light coat, and then set a timer for 30 minutes and I don't go back out there until it goes off. Another light coat and set the timer again. After the third, I set the timer for an hour before I peeled off the excess. ;)
MadDog2020 12-08-2011, 05:33 PM LOL, best part, it's all reversible. I just peeled it off. It's now dark out and my Jeep is in the garage (no doors, top, windows etc) so tomorrow night I'll have another (much more patient) crack at this =)
royalfitz 12-08-2011, 06:44 PM Tried doing my front emblem today... didnt work out to great. I tapped off about 4-6 inches around the emblem and still had some overyspray. isnt a big deal i just rubbed the paint with my finger and it came off. I didnt feel like rubbing my car down with my finger so ill get to washing it tomorrow and get it all off. no problem. Ill try again tomorrow and upload some pics of the progress/ screw ups haha

hopefully after cleaning the 8 ill be more inclined to do a better job and like was stated before maybe ill have a little patience and take my time doing it haha. Hopefully i can get around to posting some pictures tomorrow!
GZRX-8 12-09-2011, 02:11 PM I found out about plasti dip a little over a year ago and blacked out the emblems on my Saab 9-3 and it worked like a charm. :biggthump I used plasti dip again when I got my 8 three or four months ago and it has held up nicely. Something different that I did that I have not seen mentioned in this thread is I plasti dipped the lower plastic portion of the rear bumper. As we all know that piece tends to fade and look pretty bad over time. The bumper piece and the emblems have held up nicely over the last four months. Hope this helps any of you that may be considering a fix for that annoying faded bumper. :)

Could you post a pic of that? My bumper is getting that notorious fade and it makes me angry haha
xexok 12-09-2011, 02:25 PM Brettly have you tried using some mothers back-to-black on it? Sometimes it does not work the best on older plastic(may take multiple coats), but its worth a try at least. It makes my plastic pieces on the car a deep black and I have seen some with older rx8s that the plastic looks brand new because of this stuff.

Brettly2005 12-09-2011, 02:36 PM I have a bottle of it in my garage, just never thought about it :wallbash:

I have thought about doing this to my back and front bumber/grille. Or even the side little plastic pieces those are fading as well. anywho here are some pictures from earlier today

When it warms up I'm going to clean the car up and then take pics, just bare with me I am not sure when I will get to with the holidays coming up.

Sounds good! I would like to see what it looks like
xexok 12-10-2011, 07:04 PM I have a bottle of it in my garage, just never thought about it :wallbash:
When I was at the WHiV meet in may out here there were some people there with an older red rx8, not sure of the year but I am thinking 06 or older. Every single piece of black trim on that car looked better than mine and they had always used that back to black stuff. It looked better than my car and it was only a year old at that time.
Wingznut 12-11-2011, 05:20 AM I have thought about doing this to my back and front bumber/grille. Or even the side little plastic pieces those are fading as well. anywho here are some pictures from earlier today
Picture 1: After the first coat
2: After 3 coats
3/4: Final products
Did you mask off right to the edge of the emblem? You don't need to do that. I left a square of ~2" around the emblem bare.

Ya I did just so I had a little less to clean up Haha

Sounds like some magical stuff! :boink:
royalfitz 12-11-2011, 02:59 PM has anyone thought of plasti dipping their trunk? I know some people like that style of the "black" trunk kinda like this --
http://media.photobucket.com/image/rx8%20trunk/oceasar/th_rx8trunk.jpg
Of course it wont turn out exactly like that but ive seen a user i think on this forum that plasti dipped the top of their rx8 and it turned out really good.
xexok 12-11-2011, 03:48 PM Yea that was in this thread even I think. Its possible, should be much easier since you can just remove the trunk.

I'm gonna re-do them at some point, didn't have the best turn out. Kind of thicker in some areas, and the edges didn't clean up too nicely. Ah well.
Any reason why my pics are just coming up as links, and not pics? Ugh.
Not picking up the img tags or something..

That looks good, never gonna be perfect for that 5.99 can :cwm27:
Curious how you got the stuff inbetween the lettering out though? toothpick or did you tape off the inside as well as around?
But if you scroll down the page a little when typing the "reply" there is a button that says "Manage Attachements" and you can browse files on your computer or enter that URL.
MS Addict 12-11-2011, 05:58 PM Yeah, I know there's that, but I'm feeling a tad lazy, haha. The links are there, good enough for me right now.
I actually used a plastic fork, and broke the two inner prongs, or whatever you wanna call them, off.
Hell, with it being a windy day today, I got overspray everywhere. It was halfway up my hood, wtf? We know who's getting clay barred soon, even though I washed it all off. Would've clay barred it today, but it was already getting dark, and approaching freezing.
Stupid winter.
Anywho, thank you. :)
royalfitz 12-11-2011, 06:01 PM I actually used a plastic fork, and broke the two inner prongs, or whatever you wanna call them, off.
Ya i used a toothpick...well like 20 of them (kept braking) i plan to do my back emblems as well just havent found the time cause im also feeling lazy lately haha
As you said overspray i had tons when i did my gas cap. When i washed my car i was able to scrub it off pretty easily and you cant even tell!
MS Addict 12-11-2011, 06:05 PM Yeah, I grabbed my bottle of quick detailer, a microfiber towel, and just went to town.
I initially thought about a toothpick, but I just figured a fork would be easier. Though, the toothpick might've been nicer for the much smaller areas. Well, something the size of one, only tougher.

On the inside of say the mazda emblem were you able to get it to come out nice and clean or did you have to pick at the parts that didnt come out initially? as in little parts of the plasti dip didnt peal off at first and had to gradually pick the pieces out
MS Addict 12-11-2011, 06:54 PM I had to pick at every single one of them, haha. I had no luck with that emblem, what so ever.
It, and the Rx8 ones are definitely 5-10 footers. Look their best then. ;)
I was also getting a bit rushed peeling them then, as the temp had gone down by 10 degrees since I first started on the front emblem.
And when it's barely even 40 in the first place, and you're not dressed for that 10 degree difference.. Yeah.

ya i got annoyed with the little pieces so i started to stuff the extra down under the symbol to where you couldnt see it
lookitsjeremy 01-06-2012, 08:20 AM Plasti-dip is amazing. I did the emblems and wheels. You just have to be patient with the peeling around the emblems. My turned out perfect, even with up close looks. Used 3 coats on everything.
I have since peeled it off the wheels. I will let you know before you decide to plasti-dip them, peeling it off the "rough" areas of the wheels is a bit tedious, but it does all come off eventually. I am talking about that whole area around the lug holes where its scuffed from the nuts, as well as around the center cap hole. I had to get a pair of tweezers and pick at it all :)
Done in smooth, even coats the emblems and wheels can turn out to look perfect.
P. Swayzee 01-08-2012, 12:23 PM @ lookitsjeremy ......How long does it last on your wheels? does it "chip" and peel from debris in the road? I was thinking about doing my wheels with it for the winter to protect them from rock salt

Nah you'll be good. I've had mine on since begginning of December. No chips nothing only two coats. Gonna add another coat and do it on the inside as well. Looks much cleaner.
lookitsjeremy 01-09-2012, 06:27 AM I only had it on my wheels for a few days. I had painted them as it was getting dark out so I had poor lighting and some of the inner edges of the wheels didn't look so good. So I pulled it all off and will re-do it when I can spend more time doing it right.
DungeonKeeper 01-09-2012, 10:45 AM has anybody been crazy enough to plasti dip the whole car? ... my car was key and well im thinking it might not look nice on the whole car.. just a crazy idea.
Mazda_RX804 01-09-2012, 04:49 PM ^^^ my friend tried turning is golf from Silver to White, It costs alots of money and time. It took him like 8 cans to do a fender and door, and it needed more coats. Will cost alot to do a whole car.
He later scrapped the idea, and peeled it off.
bootslxa 01-10-2012, 12:28 AM I used to drive a really shitty black 01' Protege before I got my 8. The clear coat on the hood started delaminating so my friend and I Plastidip'd the hood and trunk. It didn't look good covering the whole surface but it looked better than the grey and white splotches all over it. It held up remarkably well even when I wrecked it. We also used it to black out the chrome trim on my friend's Pontiac G8.
cfm251 01-10-2012, 08:22 PM plastidip is pretty neat stuff I have actually contemplated doing the whole car in the matte white :sweatdrop but i wont lol, im about to do the silver trim in the car and maybe some eyelids just got to get some painters tape.
Sorry for the crappy lighting. I got home and just wanted to hurry up and see what it looked like. Have to finish the back tomm. I kinda wanna finish tonite but it's too dark lol
First mod down. YAY! lol

P. Swayzee 01-25-2012, 03:24 PM So when you peel it off it only sticks to the badge or do you have to trim it with something?
scottynoshotty 01-25-2012, 08:39 PM awesome DIY..cant wait to pick up a can and hit it this weekend
Wingznut 01-26-2012, 04:55 AM So when you peel it off it only sticks to the badge or do you have to trim it with something? It'll only stick to the badge. Easy peasy!
scottynoshotty 01-28-2012, 03:46 PM awesome mod..really easy..hardest part is getting the little stuff left over at the end.. works exactly like it says tho..for all you winning blues looking at doing this i left the mazda symbol filled in black..looks great on the blue
P. Swayzee 02-07-2012, 08:15 PM Did mine today. Since it's cold I used a hair dryer to heat up the surface a little before spraying, then immediately after each coat hit it with the hair dryer for a couple of seconds and then let it self dry for 2 minutes between coats. You can watch it go from liquid to rubber when the heat hits it. Have patients because getting all the stuff from inside the letters is a little time consuming.
Silverhorn 02-09-2012, 10:39 PM I did mine. See if you guys like.
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE:
Do not spray this from all angles. Just try to get it head on. IF you connect the portions on the paint and the emblem you end up taking some off of ur emblem when u try to separate it. If you just spray head on, and don't let it pool near the bottom of your emblem it should come off really easily and separate no problems.
Also, use a plastic pic, any type of metal u will end up scratching some of your paint because it takes a little vigor to get the smaller sections dislodged.
Mazda_RX804 02-10-2012, 07:27 AM dont forget to pick out the insides of the mazda badge, use a toothpick, works well for me.

+1... takes a little time but it looks better imo

Thanks! Hadn't thought of using a toothpick. IDKW :ylsuper:
MaD666MaX 02-11-2012, 05:20 PM bought a can, will do my emblems after when ill unstore my car
anyone tried it on wheels?
Mazda_RX804 02-12-2012, 09:29 AM as said many times before in this thread, yes you can do it on wheels.

Make sure you clean them really really well...
cfm251 02-16-2012, 01:33 AM still had most of the can left so i made some eyelids and sprayed over the b-pillar
Silverhorn 02-16-2012, 05:56 AM still had most of the can left so i made some eyelids and sprayed over the b-pillar
You'd be better off getting some badges for your side column (Mazda Speed makes a nice one). Check the top of this pic... I like the eyelids thou. :dubs:
McGridDLe 04-09-2012, 01:02 PM what a good idea I'm definitely going to do this! If I really like It I'll probably play around with the eyelid idea also, thanks!

cfm251 04-11-2012, 02:30 AM I did mine too...
Turned out really good
McGridDLe 04-11-2012, 06:58 AM same here, I did a test run on just my front emblem last night and it turned out really good. I'll do the others on the back tonight hopefully.
The can says that there is also a clear type of the same stuff, has anyone tried that out as a clear coat for a more glossy look? It's only 6$ I think if I can find a can I might try it just to see what it looks like
cfm251 04-12-2012, 02:45 AM glossifier clear makes it look a bit shinny... the product im actually looking forward to is this

Soooo I dipped my lower lip....I was too impatient in taking the newspaper off so I ripped some of it. I need to redo it this weekend. I think it looks alright.:dunno:
While I was taking these pics after my polefit class, I realized there was a dude sitting in the elantra next to me. LMAO he prob thought I was crazy or something.
Brettly2005 04-12-2012, 01:08 PM I like all these ideas!

Yes it is.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/brettly2005/IMG_2936.jpg
xexok 04-16-2012, 02:41 PM I did this today, took two tries but it came out good on the front emblem. I did 4 or 5 light coats and let them each dry for maybe 30 minutes. After the second coat it was covered decently, but still do not get over zealous and start spraying to much or you will get runs.
The best advice in this thread was:
Be patient and only do VERY light coatings, the first coating should not cover all the chrome
Follow the directions on the can, spray from 12+ inches away
Spray from directly in front of it, don't try and spray from the sides. This made the front emblem WAY easier to do
Here's a few pictures of it on a wwp car, bad lighting I know I will try and get some better ones today.
shakenbake61 04-23-2012, 02:55 PM hey guys, just had an idea for those eyelids. im a fan of the more curved eyelid shape thats out there, i thinks the ones by evo-r. im thinking if i can trace that same shape on a piece of paper and cut it out, we can get the same looking eyelids....what are you're thoughts? any idea where i might be able to find that shape/image?
just did a google search and i think i found what im looking for. im gonna try this out tonight and post pics if it doesnt rain.
shakenbake61 04-23-2012, 07:28 PM alright so i just got done with my eyelids, i made a stencil in Paint from an image i found of the eyelids on the interwebz. i enlarged it, so that it printed out to be the right size. anyway, here is the end result
