So I thought this was somewhat odd - I installed a racing beat dual resignator mid-pipe (yes, I'm 100% it doesn't have a cat) and hooked it up as per all instructions with the stock muffler. It's been about 5 days now that I've been driving the car and I haven't recieved any CEL warnings...

As ironic as this seems, is this something to be worried about? The only thing I could think of is that the previous owner may have had cobb or something similar installed to mask the CEL, but its highly unlikely (given his age and mileage on the vehicle)

I shoudl also point out that when taking the cat off the car and looking into it, I found that there was a rather large hole in the first section of the catalyzers... ie. it looked like it was on its way out eventually. (car has around 35,000 km)

I'm sure its nothing to be worried about... but I found it very strange!

 

Hi i have the same midpipe as you and i dont have a CEL neither , but sometimes it pops up when u high rev then it goes away

I believe the earlier models were less prone to throwing CELs with midpipes. I had the Agency midpipe on mine for some time, and I never did get a CEL. Mines and 04.

 

I didn't get a CEL with a borrowed BHR prototype for 3 weeks, 2005.

I was chatting with another member yesterday, who is working on cracking the ECU on his own time just for kicks (yes, he knows there are other options), and he says he thinks that for 04s and 05s (at least) there is a logical error in the code where, under certain situations/environments, the sensors are working fine but the code was written incorrectly and it won't throw a CEL, even though it should.

He likens the coding error to the Toyota coding issues, although obviously with a much less critical component.

The explanation with faulty ECU readings makes sense... but I don't understand why other's with other midpipes get error readings within 10 min. They all have pretty much a straight pipe design...

 

I'm sure he has a lot more information on the subject, but that's what it boils down to.

Ja, an old fart would never have an Acess Port. Especially MM, he's so damn old............

 

Straight pipe design, but I can easily see that the flow of air within apparently equal pipes is not perfectly identical. I can easily see 'eddies', 'swirls', higher or lower flow areas of a given cross section, etc... All it takes is the flow of exhaust at the point of the sensor to be within the certain criteria that is incorrectly coded on the emissions mapping, and you get no CEL. Can a pipe get 'tuned' or 'designed' specifically to take advantage of this? Probably yes, but also highly unlikely that it is worth it. The emissions maps could have been affected in factory re-flashes as well, etc... So car to car for even the same year might not even be stable enough even if you did figure out the conditions under which it wouldn't. Much easier to ignore the CEL or block the CEL. It might not even have to do with the midpipe. It might be the header, or a sub-par gasket that is letting in air diluting the exhaust, etc...

Yes, I was referring to the stuck throttle issue, as well as the no-brake-override issue. However I hardly see this as something people 'worry' about. Just because there is something that the factory would see as a 'problem' doesn't mean that we do as well. I see discussions around this as being entirely of the nature: "can we take advantage of this?"

I mean, wouldn't you take advantage of it if you could?

Have to understand it first before that can happen though.

Even so, I still love knowing the "why", and the more something is called odd, the more 'why' I want to know about it
