View Full Version : Reincarnated RX8
SpazLE995 03-26-2010, 01:44 AM Reincarnated RX8 just that it got 34 years older AND A LOT LIGHTER!!!!!
Keywords: Motor swap, Engine swap,
So a little background info, I was not really into rotaries much until I met my wife as she had an RX8 although it was an Auto (6-port) and didn't have the torque my mustang had I still fell in love with the car. So I tried convincing her to let me convert it to a manual, well as you can see I had no luck and that is why I am writing this thread. My first Car was a 1973 Beetle and if you have never driving one you have NO IDEA how much fun you can have with that car. Since that car had been totaled by a retard smashing into me with his jeep I have all ways been on the look out for another one. I found this 1970 rust free and a complete Parts Car RX8 in southern California when I was in the Marine Corps. I have since got out and now building my project back in Michigan.
I will have all the pics on Photobook so just click on my link and you can look through the rest.

Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions I am all Ears!
1970 VW Beetle-roll cage, fiberglass front end and fenders, welded in torsion bar adjusters, dash cover, tow bar "it towed very nicely from CA to MI behind my Mustang" the guy even dropped it off to me on base all for $550

SiLVeRE8 03-26-2010, 02:21 AM nice build! can wait to see it finish..
dondo 03-26-2010, 02:28 AM this should be interesting. ;)
SpazLE995 03-26-2010, 02:39 AM I remember being able to chirp 2nd in my '73 with the stock 1600cc Engine with 49HP We will see if the Rotary can do a little bit better.
pdxhak 03-26-2010, 04:40 AM Love it! I have always wanted to build a rotary ghia. Good to see Kennedy Engineering is still selling parts for the conversion.
Krazed_Rx8 03-26-2010, 06:49 AM Interesting... Looking forward for more updates. GL!:biggthump
mscamp02 03-26-2010, 06:55 AM very interesting, cant wait to see more pics

good luck with the build very interesting!!!
Race Roots 03-26-2010, 08:19 AM This should be a very interesting conversion...
dillsrotary 03-26-2010, 08:21 AM Simply awesome.
haha subscribed! cant wait to see the finished product.
Vyndictive 03-26-2010, 09:09 AM . . . are you making this front wheel drive?
. . . running all the cooling aparatus to the front of the car?
Transmission plans? I see the 6 speed in there... but how you gonna shift it?
I just. . . hmm... how is this gonna work?
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 09:18 AM Fuck, I was the first person last night to see this thread. I guess my post didnt go through. Well if anyone is wondering what this might run in the 1/4 mile... Here's a story I have to tell. A buddy of mine in Auto Tech in High school did a engine swap to a similar beetle. He swapped in a 87 RX7 13b Turbo. When the "LACR" (Los Angeles County Raceway) was open before they tore it down to mine it, he took it there and ran 13.5 sec's in the 1/4 mile. Pretty dam quick. He was even smoking subie's at the time. The engine would eventually give becuase he couldn't find a way to keep it from overheating. When the engine Gave I remember he tore the block apart and gave me 1 of the rotors. That is the first time in my life seeing a "rotor" and I carried it around my backpack, that shit was HEAVY. He carried around the Turbo from the engine and every kid in AUTO TECH thought he was the coolest kid. At least who wouldnt at that age and having those skills? I know I have picutres Im gonna look 4 them.
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 09:21 AM To add to that, one time we were cruising around and A Porsche Boxster somehow ended up in the rear view mirror. IT WAS HILARIOUS. BTW- It would lift up the front end up a bit (pop a wheelie) so dont be surprised if you do the same. Because power wise or w/e from what I know the RX8 is faster than the 87' gen RX7 but not the FD. (I still think a finely N/A Tuned RX8 with some RB N/A Mods along with BHR's Ignition Kit will smoke a stock FD, but what DO i KNow?) He went through 2 trannies as well I believe.
VYDYCTIVE: The beetle in my story was RWD, Im sure his beetle is going to be as well.
Vyndictive 03-26-2010, 09:25 AM As Zumn Mentioned with his buddy... I think cooling is going to be a real issue unless you're able to mount a giant radiator up front and find a place to mount the oil coolers.
I know this is going to set you back enough already, but I'd look into the RE-emdy water pump and thermostat and a higher capacity oil pan...
Not going to lie, I'm skeptical about how its all going to go together, but It seems like you've got a lot of progress done and know what you're doing.
Rotary Beetle. . .
rodjonathan 03-26-2010, 09:27 AM definitely unique cant wait to see the finished product looks like it will be a blast to drive
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 09:32 AM Considering the Oil Coolers are not that Big Im sure that they can be mounted near the back of the bettle and get some custome Braided hoses to run them. Also The Idea of having the Radiator up front I think is a Brilliant Idea, just make sure you have some sort of Vented Hood or something. Its definitely possible to do that considering "BACK IN THE DAY" The radiators were mounted at the rear of the vehicle while the engine was mounted at the front. :yesnod:
Vlaze 03-26-2010, 09:35 AM There is a good reason to keep coolers and radiators up front; air flow to cool them down.
If you don't want heating issues don't put them in the rear where they get absolutely no air flow.
RX8YA 03-26-2010, 09:36 AM Awesome i saw one of these for sale in my local craigslist in jersey rotary bug awesome
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 09:40 AM There is a good reason to keep coolers and radiators up front; air flow to cool them down.
If you don't want heating issues don't put them in the rear where they get absolutely no air flow.
I was just stating that it would work in situation in the reverse order that I explained it. Well at least thats what I meant, that the radiator doesnt have to be located where the engine is.
Vlaze 03-26-2010, 09:47 AM Actually, there was no radiator in the beetle cars, until they developed the "rabbit" which has been redesigned since the mid 70's to now. The VW beetle cars were all, rear mounted engines and air cooled, not water cooled. So I'm not sure why you say "back in the day" when no VW Beetle engine was installed in the front, only the rear.
If he's using an Rx8 engine in place, this is not going to be possible to keep a radiator nor oil cooler in the rear without overheating it.
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 09:50 AM OK, maybe I should have been more clear. I wasnt talking about the beetle's ( i know i should have stated that) I was talking about how people like to put big block V8's into a 1932 truck and have no more space to put the radiator up front. So considering the truck was small, They put it out back. Sorry for not stating that in the first place.
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 10:08 AM For Instance.... This Supra Had a V12 TT swapped into it and there was no more space for them to put the Radiator... So what they did was mount the radiator in the back.... Thats all im trying to get across here, that the radiator doesnt have to be mounted in the same place. Maybe he should V-mount it to the roof? :dunno:
SUPERSTREETONLINE.com:
"The ARC intercooler is angled into the front bumper to make room for the V-12 but this leaves no room for the ARC radiator-it's in the trunk along with a massive fuel cell (alas, Jonny's bike will never fit in there). Each quarter window gives up a fine piece of glass to make way for custom ducts leading to the radiator with twin puller fans sucking the remaining hot air out through a vent in the rear bumper."

ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 10:13 AM ^I think he should do something like this, instead of the Vented hood Idea I stated earlier. He should mount the radiator up front under the hood and just make some ducts leading to the radiator and have some fans sucking out the hot air. :yesnod: EASY DOES IT ;) It's simple...I can do it with my eyes closed. ;)
lepichichi 03-26-2010, 11:01 AM wowwwww this is freaking cool, cant wait to see the final result, good luck!
perks11 03-26-2010, 11:56 AM gotta love using the old lawn mower to move around the engine now that improvising!! Gl with the build, im not a huge beetle fan but have seen some CLEAN beetles at car shows and that is what im kind of expecting here.
SpazLE995 03-26-2010, 12:21 PM Just to clear some things up here:
It is using the VW 4speed trans, I have the RX8 radiator which will be mounted up front, and yes it will fit the oil-coolers in the back. I am planing on running a vent through the side to the back to get air flow. I will post some more pics to clarify this. Thanks for the input. At least you guys like this a little bit better than that guys swap when he tried to put the Supra Engine in the RX8 and failed.
Vyndictive 03-26-2010, 12:29 PM Yeah... cooling is the only reason i would see this not working...
I failed on bell housing identification... explains why you had to fab a mount for the Renesis.
And it looks like you're keeping lots of the RX8 parts thoughout. Seats, steering wheel, dash, etc... its going to be really cool all the way around. I've always wanted to mess with a beetle.
c0ldf1ame 03-26-2010, 02:02 PM o man, thats gonna be a awesome build, can you post more pix of the build?

I actually had it shipped from CA to MI on the mower deck because the moving company wouldn't ship just car parts, ie an engine but they would ship a lawnmower, lol
ZumnRx8 03-26-2010, 08:35 PM ^Thats COOL :yesnod: I would never have thought about that.
CrazyJek 03-27-2010, 12:41 AM That is just awsome. I wanna see the final results with this thing popping wheelies...lol.
Im gonna say this now. I bet this will run a 12 on the 1/4 mile.

ClearVue 03-28-2010, 11:53 AM Gotta admit man, that is pretty spectacular. Good luck and I can't wait to see the final product when its completed. Keep us updated :)
SpazLE995 04-03-2010, 09:35 PM UPDATE! Installed Steering wheel, Dash, and passenger seat.
What do you think of the RX-8 Wheels? Should I do it?
ZumnRx8 04-03-2010, 09:57 PM Negative on the RX8 wheels....
@!!narotordo 04-03-2010, 10:26 PM Yeah put some D's on that bitch!
SpazLE995 04-04-2010, 09:18 PM Negative on the RX8 wheels....
What would your reasoning be NOT to put them on? It will give the car much needed stability and traction, Not just in a straight line but also side to side and at highway speeds. The stock VW tire is about the same Diameter but only 165 wide vs 245 and on a 15" wheel vs 18". If you are thinking that you will then see the 4 wheel drums, well once the project starts rolling I am going to do a Front disc brake conversion.

dont listen to him
use the RX8 wheels!
pdxhak 04-04-2010, 10:20 PM ^+1 use the RX8 wheels. We will need to see how they look once the car is off blocks and the ride height is set though. 18" is a big step for the bug.
mbentley 04-05-2010, 08:18 AM i'd vote for no on the rx8 wheels. i actually saw a riced out mustang with stock rx8 wheels the other day. pretty sure i threw up a little bit in my mouth when i saw that...

Well did it have a Rotary?
3DZukini 04-05-2010, 09:52 PM I kind of like the RX-8 wheels, but I'd rather see something a little more like Cragars or something... maybe Bullitt Mustang wheels? What size are the wheels on the newer Bullitt mustangs?
3DZukini 04-05-2010, 09:55 PM Here: http://www.cruizinconceptswholesale.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BULLITTWHEELTIREPACKAGES_BLKCH R1
I think those would be a badass mix of old and new!!
keep the 8 wheels, if you put mustang wheels then it better have a mustang under the hood. if you put porsche wheels then you better have a porsche motor under the hood.
i hope your build works.
3DZukini 04-05-2010, 10:24 PM I wasn't actually thinking of a mustang at all when I though of those wheels... I was picturing the old chrome Cragars that looked like that because I remember them on VW's from way back when. But then I thought about the Bullitt mustang and that it has the same look in a modern size, and when I googled it I stumbled on those wheels.... 18x9 and 18x10, black chrome. I thought they'd be sexy and flush :)
XDEEDUBBX 04-05-2010, 11:15 PM thats cool

Yes definitely keep the stock RX-8 5 spoke wheels, they will look great :) !!!!! Can't wait to see this finished.

GL with ur build, and never forget to restore the beetle from the ground up to compliment ur efforts. take ur time and never rush things, or settle for a 1/2 assed job.
from what i can tell... it seems to me like u are a detailed person.
sooo... what color you think the beetle will end up being?

SpazLE995 11-01-2010, 07:18 PM Need some input as to what I should do for the oil coolers. As of now I only have one as the second one was damaged.
Should I get another factory oil cooler and mount it who knows where?
Should I use the one I have now and get an aftermarket one also that comes with the oil filter adapter?
should I just use a single aftermarket cooler and get lines made for the banjo fittings?
Can the coolers be mounted higher than the engine or will the oil drain from it once I turn the car off and cause oil starvation at start-up?
Any suggestions as to where I should mount them?
Would it be beneficial to run lines up to the radiator and use the trans cooler as the radiator came from an automatic?
I know that's a lot of questions for one post but also remember that this needs to be on a budget.
Here are some pics as to where I mocked up a place to fit the one stock cooler.
I know there might not be a lot of air flow right there but I can always make a scoop right behind the rear passenger window and run a tube to the cooler.

hyoseok414 11-02-2010, 12:24 AM oh wow... this is amazing...
I hope you are having lots of fun doing this!
california style 11-02-2010, 03:03 AM that looks fantastic! Great idea and skill so far... its brilliant you are transplanting so much.
Can you not mount another oil cooler right next to the one you already have mounted? ( so its above where the throttle body is?)
Dirt_Nasty 11-02-2010, 07:44 AM Looking really good. Awesome build idea, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Kamz8880 11-02-2010, 08:00 AM Hmm, this looks like its gonna be a Herbie Killer! LOL. Someone call Disney!!!
Chad D. 11-02-2010, 08:10 AM Maybe I will see you at dgrr when my austin 1100 is finished in 2012. I'm mostly held up building a custom frame and tunnel and such b/c it used to be fwd.
I really like how you used the OrigDash, the roundness really matches the car imo.
SpazLE995 11-02-2010, 11:29 AM Can you not mount another oil cooler right next to the one you already have mounted? ( so its above where the throttle body is?)
I was thinking of just getting one long and narrow cooler and mounting it kind of in the same location.
Anyone know dimensions that the oil cooler needs to be to get the correct cooling capacity? ie: the surface area.
Cylestyne 11-02-2010, 11:32 AM Oh wow, really cool! Won't handle like an 8 but sure is a good project.
Renesis07 11-02-2010, 11:56 AM That beetle only has 56K miles?!?! ;)
This is prob one of the coolest projects Ive seen in a while.

Bear in mind the Jap spec RX8s run with just 1 oil cooler.... but more = better, especially if you arent getting good flow over them?
You could try with just the one and see how you go, if you can monitor the temps ok.....

bse50 11-03-2010, 05:59 AM Back on the oil cooler topic:
You could either build a couple of vents like those found on the old fiat 126: http://www.pedalpumpinggirls.com/Fiat_126_Cranking_001.jpg
or just move a larger yet shorter cooler in front of the radiator, while using the tranny cooler in line as well.
Dunno, just some random thoughts
navyslideby 11-03-2010, 06:53 AM although its completely unrelated, ^ shes hot.
but i love this project man. and ya if you could mount 2 oil coolers it would be a better idea. might as well do it right the first time around and not risk the safety of your motor
pdxhak 11-03-2010, 11:06 AM Easy... in this case I'm sure it's just an abbreviation.
Next someone says Am Ex instead of American Express, I'm gonna sue! :Peace:

Here is a rendering of the Beetle air flow stock and with the deck lid stand off which I have. The stand offs claim to give 30* cooler temps but not sure how accurate that would be. I would still like to add a duct inlet from the side of the car through the body and direct it to the cooler.
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy37/jdn995/beetle-air-flow.jpg
if I go completely after market for the oil cooler what else do I need besides the Cooler and lines? I believe the stock cooler has a built in thermostat? Will I need a check valve to prevent the oil from draining out of the cooler once the car is turned off? Thanks for the input.

Sorry for getting this off topic but this type of crap pisses me off. FWIW I'm enjoying the build.
california style 11-03-2010, 04:38 PM sorry to have an 'in thread rumble' but in the UK 'Jap' is a common shorthand phrase. 2 of our biggest cars shows are "Jap Fest" and "Jap Show".....
If I were you I wouldn't come here on holiday, you might find it overly offensive....
Of course no offense is meant, to be clear. However, get a life. The fact the original poster is called Spaz would cause great offence to some in the UK (I dont know about the US) but I'm not going on about it. All I care about is his cool build.
pdxhak 11-03-2010, 05:04 PM So because it is "OK" in your neck of the woods it should be fine here as well? Think you need to check your righteous self.

Pulled the Motor and Trans to do a little clean up before all the fluids are added.
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy37/jdn995/Photo1699.jpg
Since the Trans was also out, matching it up to the motor was easier when I installed the Poly Trans mounts. Due to the adapter plate you need to remove a notch out of the trans mounts.

Right now I just ran it with a stock air box and the oil cooler hanging in the back. I wanted to make sure everything was good before I put more money into it. I am going to run lines to the front and get another stock oil cooler.

SpazLE995 11-06-2010, 05:03 PM I guess my question really is how are you going about connecting the drive train to axel?
It's a Trans Axle. I don't really understand? Engine to Trans, Trans to Axle, Axle to Wheel, Wheel to ground.
You can see in the pic when it is out of the car that everything is there. Does that answer your question?

Made the intake. Had the K&N filter and the duct laying around so I finally put them to good use. At least with this set up I wont have to cut a big hole in the Engine bonnet just for a filter even though it will probably pick up some heat from the engine. I would rather have it that way so the car will overall look better.

Hey how much does your single cooler in front of your radiator affect your coolant temps? I plan on running the oil coolers up front but the only real place would be in front of the Radiator.

Just a thought... How about mounting the oil coolers in a Yakima-Style roof rack, with a mesh screen the front to mask them? Or just a custom mount made to look LIKE a ski/surf rack? Just an idea... I know there are VW oil coolers made to mount to the roof. I thought about one because I was in Yucca Valley, CA where temps are 130ish, but mine had a factory sunroof.

Modified Wiper assembly to use the RX-8 motor. I did wire up the vw motor first but it is just to slow and out dated. The mazda motor is more than twice as fast as it's slow is faster than the vw fast. Also with using the mazda motor it allows me to use the intermittent function.

Yeah I guess, Well I sort of have a sleeping disorder and do most the work at night. Plus the house I am currently renting is in a gated community and I guess they don't like people doing ANYTHING COOL!!! So I keep the door mostly shut during the day. I didn't hear any complaints till I had the door wide open, the motor in one spot and the trans in another. I hate stupid people that complain for no reason.
Dirt_Nasty 11-11-2010, 08:18 PM I love people who think they can tell you what you can do in your own Home.
SpazLE995 11-11-2010, 08:50 PM I love people who think they can tell you what you can do in your own Home.
Well they are trying to say that it is in the Home Owners Association rules that you can't do any major overhaul work. They have not come to me directly but my neighbor (the only one here I really talk to and he's cool) who is now the HOA Secretary told me someone brought it up in their Super Secret Meeting.
Even if they tell me I can't work on it they can eat my A** and I'll even give them a spoon.
They really can't say anything now because it RUNS.
RIWWP 11-12-2010, 06:39 AM Homeowner's associations are like unions, though you get harassed instead of 'protected'.
I belonged to one once, when I was going through the legal fight with Toyota over my transmission, and the transmission sat in the trunk of the Corolla. Corolla sat in my assigned parking place. Then someone stole the tags. HOA kept harassing me about having a none-plated car sitting there, and I informed them, repeatedly, that it was part of a lawsuit so I couldn't get rid of it, and it didn't run, so it wasn't going to pass inspection to get new tags, and I would be stupid to put tags on a car that can't move. But there wasn't much they could do about it, since it was in my assigned spot, and I kept it clean.
So then they decided to do some "roadwork" in a 3ft x 3ft section of roadway, right at the end of my parking spot, and issued a notice that it had to be moved for the roadwork, that we had to use the guest lot. So I did, my wife and I pushing it to the guest lot. Less than 3 hours later, there was a bright orange "remove or it will be towed" sticker on the windshield, and some smug looks going around.
The "roadwork" was canceled.
I hate those people.
Glad to see it's running :)
Really impressed by the speed of completion for you, including the move.
SpazLE995 11-14-2010, 06:14 PM Went to "Bug Jam 2010" and picked up both rear side windows with new molding for $10 then also got a pair of new 195/60R15 for the front wheels for $60

It was close, The muffler didn't have a mount at that time so it was only held up with a jack stand I forgot how close it was and got halfway into the car when I heard the pulley grinding one the muffler, so I had to put a jack under the car to sit in it. Stroudism 12-08-2010, 10:19 AM Man, I am so impressed you can do something like that on your own. I only wish I had the patience to do something like that. I saw all your pics and videos on Photobucket. Kudos!

SpazLE995 12-16-2010, 05:31 PM I guess it will all depends on how much I can get done to the car by then and If my wife and I are free those dates but I will look into it. I might be able to convince her as she sold her RX-8 and misses it so looking at mostly RX-8s would be easier than any other car show.
Dirt_Nasty 12-16-2010, 05:53 PM DO IT! It will be a great time. The mountians down there are beautiful, The dragon's tail is a great drive, and so are the other roads out that way.
I should be there with the wife.
Chris 12-17-2010, 12:36 PM I had no idea you were in Tampa..... would love to see this little project! nicely done!

terch1 01-10-2011, 11:39 AM Haven't seen any updates as of late. Your last post stated the next step were head and tail lights. Where are we at. I can't wait to see the final product.

SpazLE995 01-11-2011, 10:37 AM lol, yeah, I have been busy with the holidays and such.

Sorry I missed your invite we should meet up once I get the car on the road though
SpazLE995 01-25-2011, 07:17 PM So I guess my garage had some Gremlins in it and they lived in the beetle for some time.
Trying to wire up the lights and it is driving me nuts.
Hazards function normal, but left and right turn signal both sides also.
when I turn on the light switch the brights activate
need to figure out the brake switches because I'm not using the stock pedal
For some reason the started engages from the clutch switch instead of the ignition?
At least the engine and gauges work properly!!!
SpazLE995 02-02-2011, 08:16 AM Installed '67 style horn grills as an air duct for the oil coolers (don't worry there will also be duct work from under the hood as well they are just for added flow) Also cut the hood to get some air flow to the Radiator.

Tamas 02-03-2011, 06:31 PM Can't wait to see this finished.
Definitely one of the coolest projects here :icon_tup:
lepichichi 02-04-2011, 12:39 PM I was just gonna say the holes for the coolers are too small, but then i saw the air dam :) good work, got any more vids of the car running?
SpazLE995 02-04-2011, 04:06 PM Finished installing the insulation pad, also started installing the carpet but don't have a picture. Still need to direct the radiator heat away from the pass compartment because it feels like your driving through Hell.

SpazLE995 02-04-2011, 04:07 PM OH and this thing feels like a Bat out of Hell!
9krpmrx8 02-04-2011, 04:11 PM Nice dude, glad you got everything sorted out. I bet that bitch is fast and loud. Any plans for suspension and brakes?
The Reverend 02-04-2011, 04:12 PM this thing is cool as hell dude...
terch1 02-04-2011, 06:18 PM This is by far my favorite thread. Looking good!
Tamas 02-04-2011, 06:29 PM Man... you need to put some more meaty rubber on that thing! Especially in the rear :)
Also, you could replace the Mazda emblem on the steering wheel with a VW one...
It better feels like a bat outta hell with that light chassis and the 232 HP.
SpazLE995 02-04-2011, 07:55 PM Yeah the front is so light that if your not careful the brakes will lock.
SpazLE995 02-04-2011, 08:00 PM Nice dude, glad you got everything sorted out. I bet that bitch is fast and loud. Any plans for suspension and brakes?
You can see the brake install on page 3
I also rebuilt the suspension with polyurethane bushings.
Definitely needs some tweaking and an alignment but is getting there.
california style 02-05-2011, 06:29 PM woot! Keep it up....
SpazLE995 02-13-2011, 04:58 PM Made the Passenger side seat belt bracket and installed the seat. Now my Wife can ride with me, Great news is that she likes it.
Got a new shifter! This this is so awesome! I no longer have to lean out of my seat to reach 3rd gear, The reverse lock out is not worn so I can't grind reverse while slamming 2nd, the gears are tight together, and it's spring assisted to get 3rd!
Oh and it was only $50 New!

california style 02-14-2011, 02:20 PM I think your plasma screen is falling out of the trunk....
canaryrx8 02-14-2011, 03:08 PM if you could get that piece flush with the fenders in the back that would look sooo sweet, maybe bend some sheet metal to clean it up a bit? Either way it still looks cool now. This car is the uber sleeper, paint it a factory color and put some VW steelies on it and blow people's minds
SpazLE995 02-15-2011, 08:10 AM It might not bee the coolest looking rear end but I wanted to be able to have some what of an actual bumper to protect the motor from some dumb ass rolling into me at a light but I didn't want the huge factory on either seen as it wont fit.
The other day I was in our Murano pulling a 4x8 Trailer and some Jackass AT A STOP LIGHT decides to smash into me! he said "Well I didn't see it" Well if you didn't see it were you even looking at the road! Seriously WTF

Love it man! Keep up the good work
Might I suggest a YouTube video so the world can see your work. Maybe a montage of build pics and videos of it running and a drive at the end.
Jedi54 02-15-2011, 07:08 PM how did I ever miss this thread?!
This is an amazing build with a very unique combination of chassis and engine.
Glad to hear everything is going smoothly and you're approaching the finish line. :)

dondo 02-17-2011, 11:24 AM why wood and not something lighter weight like lexan?
california style 02-17-2011, 04:54 PM cheap easy and readily available?
SpazLE995 02-17-2011, 05:00 PM why wood and not something lighter weight like lexan?
because it's about the same weight if not lighter. It's only 3/16" thick and $10 for a 4'x8' sheet where lexan would be $100-$150 plus the wood is not as flimsy.
9krpmrx8 02-17-2011, 05:22 PM You should just stain the wood
bse50 02-17-2011, 05:46 PM The wood is pretty neat! The only thing I don't like it is how it would create sharp splinters and shrapnels in the event of a collision.
Old cars aren't safe anyway so that's a moot point I guess :)
SpazLE995 02-17-2011, 06:22 PM You should just stain the wood
It's $10 a sheet so it's not really stain quality plus I like Black interior
SpazLE995 03-06-2011, 08:09 PM Covered the door panels (I know its hard to see but all I have is a cell phone for pics)

What do you guys think?
NErx8 03-06-2011, 08:16 PM I'd go with the blue. Looks awesome so far, keep it up!
monchie 03-06-2011, 09:09 PM Still debating weather to paint it Midnight-Blue or Flat Black
What do you guys think?
My favorite color is blue. So i'll say............................................... ................blue ;)
bumblebeerx8 03-06-2011, 09:18 PM i would not do a flat color of any kind. It may be kind of cool to do a factory vw paint color
Jedi54 03-06-2011, 09:23 PM Avoid the flat paint look, its played out.
I think a factory RX-8 color would be cool. Winning blue? Phantom blue?
phrenetiK 03-06-2011, 10:10 PM phantom blue man :D
J8635621 03-06-2011, 10:22 PM What's the other blue called? Not phantom or winning...the other one, the awesome one.
Ross_Dawg 03-06-2011, 10:42 PM Aurora Blue
J8635621 03-07-2011, 11:41 AM No it's stormy blue. It took me forever to find it. There aren't even many 8s that color I guess. I've seen it twice ever and it was beautiful.

darkraven.r6 03-13-2011, 10:09 PM I definitely like the idea of using blue! Nice job with the car!
HockeyRX-8 03-13-2011, 10:27 PM between those colors, go blue

RX8Soldier 03-13-2011, 10:46 PM +1 phantom blue... ;)
canaryrx8 03-18-2011, 10:47 AM Nice Honcho you got there in one of the pics, I run an SCX10 for my crawler, it has a pro-line cherokee body on it, pretty cool to see such a sick car and rc crawler in the same pic, totally made my day  :D:
9krpmrx8 03-18-2011, 11:28 AM Stormy Blue!!
bse50 03-18-2011, 11:36 AM The beetle is nice and curvy, it should look cool in winning or stormy blue!
Chris 03-18-2011, 11:55 AM This car was a blast to see in person. Even though he had it all taken apart it was still fun to hear the motor in the bug.
Good luck with your color choice Josh
