View Full Version : studering problem wile driving
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 02:54 PM I've had my '04 RX8 for about a year now and it started giving me a studering problem around 4000 rpm. It's almost got 65000 miles on it so i changed the ignition coils and i did the spark plugs bout 6 months ago but don't really know what causes this problem i got. Anyone know what i need to do to fix it?
dozer 02-17-2010, 02:55 PM any check engine lights?
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 03:15 PM I got no engine lights.
Brettus 02-17-2010, 03:20 PM This stuttering
is it under hard acceleration or just mild acceleration
does it matter if engine is hot or cold
what is your fuel economy like ?
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 03:30 PM I'm getting a little less miles per gallon, it does it under mild and hard acceleration, and doesn't matter if engine is cold or not always does it. I don't think that causes the gas problem cuz i let the car warm up in the morning for like 15 minutes cuz its cold out there.

Brettus 02-17-2010, 03:38 PM try cleaning your maf sensor and replacing your air filter (if it needs it)
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 03:44 PM i asked a retired mechanic that used to work on RX7's but he wasn't much help. he had me clean the MAF sensor and i changed the air filter befor winter started.
Brettus 02-17-2010, 03:47 PM does it rev out to 9000rpm and feel strong all the way ?
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 03:54 PM No, it studers a few more times befor so i realy don't take it past 7000
Brettus 02-17-2010, 03:58 PM /\ you should have mentioned that
Think Zoom may be right in that case - cat
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 04:00 PM didn't think about that, don't take it that high often
Brettus 02-17-2010, 04:02 PM /\ therein lies your problem - rotaries don't like that
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 04:15 PM well then, where can i get a good cat from? don't think I'll put OEM back in it
Old Rotor 02-17-2010, 05:31 PM I would run a can of Seafoam on half or quarter a tank of gas and give her hell. It's $8 to see if you have some carbon or gunk buildup. If there is some improvement run another it might do it.
mr_a2z05 02-17-2010, 06:06 PM guess ill try the seafoam first
alnielsen 02-17-2010, 09:12 PM Are you running an aftermarket cat? I haven't heard of those clogging up. Just breaking/burning up. OEM cats can clog (they have for me). You are still under warranty for a factory cat.
cat
+1 I smell kitty cat...
mr_a2z05 02-18-2010, 11:16 AM i got factory cat and warrenty went out i bit ago.
alnielsen 02-18-2010, 11:19 AM U.S. warranty on the OEM cat is 8 yrs/80,000 miles. You state that you are at 65k miles. That is well within the warranty period.
Mawnee 02-18-2010, 11:21 AM 8 yrs/80000 miles on emissions devices.
dillsrotary 02-18-2010, 11:50 AM i i i i it it it it so sos sous sous sound sounds sounds sounds sounds sounds like like li lik like like y y y y y y yo yoy you you you your your your your ca c c c cc a ca cca c acaat cat acat cattttttt.
mr_a2z05 02-18-2010, 07:06 PM ... gotta check on the warrenty then but i dout it cuz the car came originally from new york and i bought it from a used car dealer hear in maryland. dont know if that affects the warrenty. but anyways i was thinkin in putting a high flow after market cat in it now.
mr_a2z05 02-21-2010, 02:37 PM i took the car to the dealer and they said its not the cat. they wernt sure what it could be so i'm kind of out of ideas.
Old Rotor 02-21-2010, 04:05 PM Did you try SEAFOAM yet.....like disscused above....
zoom44 02-21-2010, 05:41 PM i took the car to the dealer and they said its not the cat. they wernt sure what it could be so i'm kind of out of ideas.
of course they said that- they didn't se acel so they decide it isn't the cat. and yet cats fail all the time without a cel. we have seen cats that threw no cel yet when opened the mesh fall ou tin little chunks.
so beyond checking for cels did they actually drive it an experience the problem as you describe? did you go with them on this drive to point out the problem?
mr_a2z05 02-21-2010, 06:14 PM i tried seafoam today and took the car out for a drive but it didnt help. the dealer took it for a drive and senced the power loss but i dont think they took the cat down to look at it. they normally only chek for CEL lights. i'm gonna take it back to them cuz my engine light came on now but dont know what code its giving me i left my scantool at work. i dont want to take my cat down at my work cuz then they're going to say i did it on purpose and broke the warranty.

It takes more then a ride or two too remove build up. You are diluted a lot more then a dealer ZOOM cleaning so this takes awhile.
mr_a2z05 02-23-2010, 08:30 PM well i took it back today so they can run a deeper diagnosis and they wont tell me anything till tomorrow. they're telling me it's posible to even be the mass airflow sensor.
mr_a2z05 02-24-2010, 04:21 PM well the dealer finally admited that it was that cat so they replacing it and the rest of the exaust cuz it ended up affecting the muffler but it got cover under warranty.
Old Rotor 02-24-2010, 06:10 PM Thats great they covered it all, hope thats it!
zoom44 02-24-2010, 06:58 PM of course they said that- they didn't se acel so they decide it isn't the cat. and yet cats fail all the time without a cel. we have seen cats that threw no cel yet when opened the mesh fall ou tin little chunks.

does anyone actually understand what i typed there? my gawd that's awful typing.
mr_a2z05 02-25-2010, 11:49 AM for some reason the first time it did but now it seems a litle hard to read
bmarrs 02-27-2010, 05:03 PM I have an '04 that does the same thing... When it gets to 4000 rpm it cuts out and at 5000 its smooth again.... I put ignition coils and plugs and cleaned my MAF, and MS CAI and it still does it.. Let me know if you do the seafoam and how it helps... I am pretty sure I have carbon build up,,,, I just turned 113000 miles on Original engine...:)
mr_a2z05 02-28-2010, 05:46 PM well the seafoam didn't really help since the CAT was completly melted out, so maybe it'll help with yours. if not, you might have the same problem i had.
