I haven't found out the particulars yet but it seems as if there may be some damage to the piping in a used Greddy kit I have purchased. I was planning on upgrading the 55mm pipes to a 64/65mm next summer but it looks as if maybe i'll be doing it a bit earlier. My question is what kind of pipe should I get and why? I have looked on ebay and there are a ton of kits for super cheap. Anyone know the pros and cons of all these $100 dollar kits besides the fab that will need to be done.

why will it not fit?

 

well those pipes in the Ebay picture are just a series of 90deg bends whereas the 50mm charge piping to the intercooler on the Greddy kit is mandrel bent to a specific design ....

 

well I sort of figured that *fab* so lets just say I got a bunch of straight tube and had them all bent to spec which is sort of what i plan on doing. I did figure it would be better to get one of the kits that already had a few bends so that's where these ebay kits come into play.

 

I'm not sure if the 50mm charge piping from the turbo outlet will fit if they are 65 mm. It may be a really tight fit around the sway bar.

 

the rx8 it very easy for pipe work and you will be able to come up with a route easily.

you will find you probably wont need any straight pipe the bends will be enough. If your just up sizing the greddy pipes check the bends and order what you think you will need. (do you need to up size the greddy pipes?)

welding and lipping the pipes costs me about 1/2 the cost of the bends. bends cost around $30 and I use about 3 per side on my pipes.

cons of doing it in bends...
welds may have pin holes. not a big deal but a pain to test.
the time it takes- unless you are doing the welding.

if you can mandrel bend one length it would be nice. if they can copy the greddy pipe work it might not be that hard but operator time would probably cost more than bends and welding.

 

i'll be running a BNR upgrade so I figured why not upsize the pipe also the intercooler I have is already 2.5" inlet/outlet. You got any good pics of your work?

BTW I know squat about flow rates but I just bought a book anyone read it and have an opinion seems to have a good bit of useful info?

here is my old pipe work. note it isn't greddy. the front mount intercooler was under the radiator and was probably 10cm less in length than what the greddy uses. pipe work is 2" I'm now running 2-2.5" and 2.5-3" before and after the cooler with a bigger intercooler.
it is unpolished but you don't see it anyway. I was surprised as I found super neat cuts aren't needed
I only hand cut the pipe and aim for 90 deg.

 

humm so I just got off the phone and it seems that another person is saying the 64mm pipe is going to be too big.

 

I wouldn't bother, the bigger tubing will just get in the way, and be of almost no benefit.

The biggest (smallest) restriction in that kit is the turbo inlet, and the reducer that precedes it, I don't remember the tubing size right there, but it's tiny.

The first thing BNR does to the Greddy turbo is to widen that inlet.

Three inch, even four inch tubing won't matter at all if it's still crimped off at the inlet.....

 

WTF I can't even find any 55mm pipe someone point me in the right direction. Smallest i've found is 57 I suppose that will work right?

 

which pipes are you trying to replace exactly? any pics?

i have 2 spare 3" 90 degree bends that are powdercoated flat black. lmk if you need them.

 

57 would be a good upgrade size I think .
However, I still think a bunch of 90 deg. bends will be only marginally better than useless for your project.
Finding someone that can bend ali pipe is the first step , then get them to bend up a copy of the greddy pipes . You will probably still have to modify what they make but it will be way better than trying to cut up and weld a whole lot of 90deg bends .
