I'm trying to remove the overhead console that contains the maplights and the sunglass holder. I followed the instructions in this thread (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8242) but after removing the phillips screws, the console doesn't want to come out. I tried the "screwdriver in the side" trick from the owner's manual but that doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference.

So, what's the trick for removing the console? Pull down at the windshield end, then what?

From the thread I referenced it looks like the metal clips are adjacent to the map lights. Can anyone confirm that? Does it help to push the blade of the screwdriver vertically to reach the clips?

Trying not to break my baby!

Yes, pull down the edge close to the windshield, then there are 2 metal clips by the map light switches. Steady downward pressure on the console edge, one side at a time, and they will pop out. And it helps if you pull the console toward the windshield at the same time.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Omicron! I'll try your technique tomorrow. Now that I have a fighting chance of succeeding!

One thing I keep on running into is just how well screwed together this car is. I'm not fond of some of the engineering decisions - headlight bulb access is a glaring example!

I followed Omicron's advice and was able to remove the overhead console. The trick is that once you've removed the 2 screws that hold it in place, you should pull down at the windshield end and wiggle the other end while pushing the console towards the windshield. It moves relatively easily once you've got the unit tilted.

BTW, don't wedge a screwdriver in the sides of the console to release the clips as the manual suggests, you'll just damage the console and the headliner and still not get the console out.

Thanks, Omicron!
