From a press release about the mazda RX8 HYDROGEN (rough translation):

"Electrically aspirated turbocharger

In order to have high boost in the whole rev range an electrically aspirated turbocharger is in the works at Mazda.
From about 1000 RPM an electro motor is activated in order to help spinning up the turbo faster, generating more boost thus improoving efficiency.
At higher RPMs the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gas as usual."

There is word about an electric/gas hybrid as well.

It seems Mazda is working on some pretty impressive stuff built around the Renesis.

The picture is about the gas/hydrogen hybrid (phew) and you can recognise the turbocharger aswell!!

Very cool indeed. Be great if Mazda sold it as a kit we could bolt onto out '8s... :D

I happend to find a very detailed description of the Tokyo motorshow on the hungarian Mazda page http:://www.mazda.hu

So it's in hungarian. I tried to find an english page to back this up, but have'n suceeded yet...

Well it's quite a long write up and... What I already translated was the part mentioning the turbo only.

I'm kind of surprised no other brougth this infor to the forum yet. The original is dated as 11-05-2003.

Well most of it is about the H2 machine, giving exact specs for both fuels. The power output is about halved when running H2. The basis for this product is the 4 port Renesis with a 5 speed manual transmission. Seeing the turbo on the same engine may be in line with some speculations abut the 4 port beeing a better basis for turbocharging you can find on this board. Just my speculation mind you!

The H2 machine can run on gas and/or H2 by having two different tanks. There is mentioning of the Renesis beeing an ideal H2 fueled engine as the injectors don't have to withsand pessures and temp as high as in a piston engine. It has two injectors because of the lower density of H2 compared to pump gas.

And at this point I realised (rereading the whole article again) that I just grabbead one part and ahve forgotten it as a whole..

So the truth is there is the Hydrogen machine which has a electrically aspirated turbocharger (in order to have reasonable power running on H2) and an electrical drive as well. There is a whole concept around the H2 fuel and not just a separate turbocharger :(

I don't think the 4 port was used so much do to the turbo but rather because they don't want to rev the engine up as high in the rpm range. It is simpler anyways on an already complicated setup.

electric assist, eh?? "turbo lag??? what turbo lag???" they'd better appropriately upsize the turbine (and power) if there's an electric assist as such... mondo boostage from the factory?? let's hope so :cool:
