Don't know of any rebuild kits out. Try getting all the parts through Mazda or even try MazMart.

Rebuilding transmissions is not that easy too, be prepared for a hard job!
What do you exactly need? it is not an engine where you can be safe buying what you call a rebuild kit, you should have an idea of what is broken and what you might need as an extra.

^it's easy if you have done it enough times!!!! haha

you will need much more than that to do it right and the parts aren't inexpensive even through discounted source, if you have to go to a dealer then you might as well forget it

once you figure parts and labor it will be much cheaper to buy a used one or a new one through Mazda Motorsports

this particular trans requires some special factory tools to rebuild, a very experienced shop might get by without them but one in particular is important

there is a stand-alone Mazda service manual for the RX-8 transmission

^^yep.

Even with MMS discounts. the price of each gear is going to kill you.

It might be better for you to just buy a new or rebuild tranny from somewhere.

You do know how much does our tranny cost brand new right ?

I wouldn't trust a 600 bux "rebuild" tranny from "ebay".

Its SST from Mazda.

the local drivetrain shop was able to get it without the SST tools, but these guys know their poop and it took several tries before they let me have it back

Well I'm in the market to redo my tranny...and I have a guy you makes does cnc machining for a living..been there like 30 years... He builds me parts all the time. Once I get mine apart and find out what's wrong and what's going on...I might talk to him about remaking these parts...price would definably be a lot cheaper. But first I have to tear mine apart.

OK what the ------ is SST? A shart holder, special wrench to remove locknuts on the gear clusters????
Never heard of it, guess a trip to the dealer is in order.

Special Service Tool, and the last place you want to go is the dealership for them, if you really want to learn more order the RX-8 Manual Transmission Service Manual, it shows all the tools and their part numbers, most you can get by with using the usual aftermarket tools like gear/bearing pullers, etc.

So has anyone had to do any work on their transmission in regards to Synchro's?

Ive been having alot of trouble with my reverse gear lately.. Sometimes takes about 2-3 tries before i can get it in there all the way

Alright guys...like I said earlier I have a guy who can make the parts..but when I looked into it I said screw it lol. Like they was saying parts are ridiculously high.

I broke teeth on the 2nd gear counter shaft...cost from mazda was like 582 and the guy said that was the best he could do...

Syncs for second was 175
first was 225
After that I stopped asking questions...

To rebuild this tranny right your going to look at a easy 1500-2000 in just the sync's and second gear...

Note second gear is known for breaking and mazda has a new part number...just cause your's is good doesn't mean it isn't going to break soon...

I was driving and everything was fine..no getting on it...no hard shifts at the time and went to come outta gear..and it was stuck in gear... Never got it outta 6th...never had any grinds except for second but that was only high rpm's...near redline.

I went with the RX7 5 speed tranny..got one from the junk yard.

As far as taking it apart and putting it back together.. you start at the tail and work your way forward and hope non of it falls apart while you take it apart...other wise it isn't that hard if your have a awesome memory and are good at doing puzzles.

I just had mine rebuilt with 35k on it. 2nd gear synchro went, all of the sudden. All gears were notchy when it went, and I had a lot of trouble getting it into reverse even from the day I drove it off the lot brand new. Now its smooth. They had to replace a bearing on the countershaft as well. I'm switching to better oil this weekend, its still a bit stiff when cold. I had the oil changed at 10k miles and I've been driving stick for 15 years and never had a transmission fail.

So, listen to this shit. I go to the dealership and had them install a BRAND NEW 09 tranny, had them install the stage 3 Exedy and prolite flywheel. I havent really driven it hard since the install and havent raced it at all.... NOW ALL THE SUDDEN when im trying to run it hard thru all the gears it fucks up. When i go to shift into 4th gear it grinds for a half second before it slides in! WTFFFF im so mad. The worst part is that they are trying to tell me the warranty is void because of my nos, they failed to tell me this BEFORE they installed the tranny....so theres nothing i can do, im stuck with a shit tranny because i didnt take my nos kit off before i had them install the tranny.gay.......

All I got to say....is to drive it...and go with it....it is bull shit that they did that too you..and forth is that all the time or only when in higher rpm's???

You could try some other fluid like the redline everyone talks about.

I hate to say it..but when I needed a tranny everyone told me to go with the 09 that is was much better and worth it...and I went with my rx7 tranny.. I've since then ran it rather hard....shift the gears hard..and third does have a small grind when shifting in..but it's a tranny from the junk yard that i bought for 225!!!!! I didn't expect it to be perfect. I got the short throw for 40 bucks. Parts are so much cheaper for the rx7 tranny..it was totally worth it to me.

You bought a new 09' tranny, clutch, and Fly wheel for an 04' 8?

Sorry man gotta call :bsflag:

yeah... I think he did...the thing that goes threw my head...is how much did that cost him???

See everyone told me to go with a 09 and I didn't and now that I got it back together and everything is great I'm glad I didn't. My install with new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, drive shaft and used tranny was about 1400...still cheaper then the 09 tranny.

Call bs all you want, i can provide pictures. And if you look down about 3cm you will see that i got a 09 tranny with ExedyS2 clutch and prolite flywheel. Just because you dont have it doesnt mean no one does.

well, 09+ Tranny works 100% with 04-08 cars. it bolts right up without any modification.

Same thing for FW and others.

but ... what kind of warranty are you asking for anyway? as far as I know you wont get any warranty for that kind of "swap" ...

If you think I'm calling bs...I'm not.. I was just saying everyone says it's better and I didn't believe it....I'm just saying I'm glad I didn't go with the 09 tranny.

But really do wonder what that cost at the dealership...tranny and labor had to be like 4000
