Dealership where I had a spare tire plus tire kit for the RX-8 on order just called me and told me it was put on indefinite backorder. I asked how long it might take and was told they didn't know because it is involved in a recall. Has anybody heard about this?

My spare tire (purchased pre-owned here) spends 99 44/100% of the time sitting in the garage. I only take it on long trips (cover-velcroed to the trunk floor carpet).

I don't think I got a spare...it looks just like one of the tires I got on right now...maybe someone just bought one of them from somebody and threw it in the trunk!

you talking about the hidieous yellow donut? Or a 18 by 8 spare tire?

Almost no one got a (yellow donut) spare tire as we instead got the 'goop/compressor' kit as a weight saving item. The spare was/is an option.
A number of sportscar manufacturers have gone with a similar "emergency inflation kit" instead of a spare tire for the same reason, notably the Honda S2000 CR.

I never worried about the spare. I don't go anywhere that a tow truck couldn't get to me somewhat easily.

Mine came with it but I took it out since I sometimes needed the space and didn't want to screw up the car's "50/50" weight ratio...even though I don't even track. Then again I don't have warranty or road side assistance anymore so maybe I should put it back in...

Just ask yourself, 'when was the last time I had a flat?'
I've had one slow leak, annunciated via TPMS and self repaired, in the 21k and four seasons I've driven this car. Prior to that was one flat circa '98 in my Jeep at the airport and circa '92 in my Eclipse after running over some road construction fragments. That's it.
'sides, I have AAA, and it's too dangerous to change a tire on the busy highways these days.
