View Full Version : RB Header Installer?
Juansito 05-25-2009, 03:02 PM I wanted to know if anyone knew how to (i would pay you) or knows a shop that can do it for me and how much would it cost to get installed. I want it done right and by someone who knows what they are doing instead of taking my 8 to any shop and getting a 2nd rate job.
Im in the Manhattan Area but willing to travel!

Juansito 05-25-2009, 04:25 PM i got mine installed for 270
Nice so the install price is around $300. Where you live and where did you get it installed at? Just a normal car shop?
lancer 05-25-2009, 05:25 PM how do you like your Header so far? any noticeable differences? I'm thinking of buying one of those header too.
there is a Exotic Speed Race Header for 700 only 30 pounds, how many pounds for the RB Header ?

Just realize that you haven't install it yet:banghead: nevermine. what is the weights on that header?
Lancer,
I just bought an RB header, havent installed it yet. It weighs somwhere around 15 llbs.
Nemesis8 05-25-2009, 05:57 PM It's easy if you have a lift. I replaced my gasket when I did mine, but you should be able to reuse the OE gasket. If you plan on doing a secondary air pump delete, get the blocking plate and put it on the header first. Also, if you had the new motor mount TSB done, you will need to cut part of the new heat shield away.
Juansito 05-25-2009, 07:02 PM No TSB done, No secondary air pump delete and i just want the Header installed and thats it.
Anyone around here got a small shop with a lift on it that can do it for me? Or knows a good shop that will do it? Dang i just need a local shop lol
Oh and lancer don't get the exotic speed header the RB is just as good and its cheaper.
Here is a video of Luckycat's RX8 ( i got my header from him since hes going TURBO)

chickenwafer 05-25-2009, 07:20 PM It isn't that hard to do yourself (on jackstands even, no lifted required). You can get it done in a few hours even if you don't know what you're doing.
Juansito 05-25-2009, 07:22 PM Chicken you wanna come to NY and install it for me? LMAO
Trust me i cant do it, I don't have the space nor the tools to even begin to do anything like this.
PS. Chicken your car is sick dude!! 300HP?!?! Got any pictures of your hood down? Im getting that TSII!
GAMBEAN 05-25-2009, 07:23 PM sounds nice! if your willing to drive out to long island I will do it for you. no lift needed.
rx8thunder 05-25-2009, 07:39 PM No TSB done, No secondary air pump delete and i just want the Header installed and thats it.

It's hard to tell how the header changes the sound because of the other variables in the mix (CAI, mid-pipe and Catback). Anyone that has one, how has it changed the sound of your car? Louder? Changed the character of the sound? Any before and after vids?
It gives it a nice "hollower" sound to it. It didn't get any louder for me but I was catless before and after. I noticed more low end grunt between 4-5k mainly. Couldn't tell too much in the 8-9k range. Hope you enjoy it once it's on, I enjoy mine :)
Juansito 05-25-2009, 08:05 PM sounds nice! if your willing to drive out to long island I will do it for you. no lift needed.
YOU GOT A PM!!!

rx8thunder i think ill hear a little difference cause i already got a loud ass turboXS exhaust. I know it will sound better though.
kersh4w 05-25-2009, 08:20 PM stock header weighs 17lbs.
i doubt the exoticspeed weighs more than that.
Juansito 05-25-2009, 08:22 PM stock header weighs 17lbs.

The question is why would anyone buy that when he can get the RB for cheaper? They are the same exact thing aren't they? Well if he wants to spend 700 on it then ok.
kersh4w 05-25-2009, 08:30 PM because its rb is not "exotic?"
the re-amemiya header costs a ridiculous amount. imo, all the headers are copies of each other. they all look the same.
the only header that looks different is the one teamrx8 built himself... and he put down 224whp.... and it weighs 8lbs.

Yea i checked out the re-amemiya and it was like 1500....I found the exoticspeed and was going to buy it before i saw the RB header -- Your right they all look exactly the same so i dont know why anyone would spend more.
+ Those 1 offs are pretty hard to come by cause i don't think teamrx8 is going to be making anymore and if he sold it -- he would most likely charge something crazy for it.
lancer 05-25-2009, 08:49 PM any one have one RB header for sale, I need one.
Juansito 05-25-2009, 09:05 PM any one have one RB header for sale, I need one.
Post up in the for sale section, thats how i got mine....I got it for cheap too cause it was used -- other people selling it brand new cause they don't know or don't wanna waste money installing it.
I'm going to get mine install by GAMBEAN, I hope he can install it for me then i will be SUPER happy!

i'll tell you... its in my garage. and unfortunately im selling it back to him. for $200. :eyetwitch

LOL If I was local I would help you out.
My hood isn't the TS-II, it's the Seibon KS Evo-style version
stock header weighs 17lbs.
i doubt the exoticspeed weighs more than that.
I thought the OEM manifold weights more than 17lbs, I could swear.....unless I'm getting weaker, LOL. I got two in my garage right now, I got to weight them
Juansito 05-26-2009, 02:06 AM The stock is 17 and i think the RB is 14-15? I don't remember.
Great news guys! GAMBEAN is going to get my header install on Saturday. Hes in Long Island -- If anyone wants to come and hang out i dont GAMBEAN would mind.
Hes going to re-install his mid-pipe on Saturday and then get my header installed! cant wait!!!!
yeah... guess where that header is sitting right now?

Ill give you $250?
nycgps 05-26-2009, 07:15 AM Although I never install a header before, Im 99.99% sure that you dont need a lift to install it. Hell I mean you dont even need a lift to replace an engine, :) so why a header ? :)
I have tools and everything so ...
Ahh, just notice that GAMBEAN is here :) maybe I should stop by to see how sweet its going to be ... :)
Its not hard... just gotta remove the RF wheel, Support the engine, take out the RF engine mount and remove the old header bolts. Then reverse the order to get it on. The hardest part is the EGR tube but its not too bad. Goodluck :)

lancer 05-26-2009, 10:25 AM hey, did any of you guys try the TITEK SS HEADER, I found one on ebay for 509, free shipping, don't know if RB charge shipping for their header or not. but this one seem similar to the RB header.
sorry for going off the topic alittle bit (still relates to the header but...)

Cool, they will hit you back soon and i'm sure they havent sold it. For my next mod I want to get the COBB AP from MM but then i want to get some new rims cause mine are FINISHED with all the crack and dents they have due to NYC driving lol
Thinking about these with a staggered setup:
http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ktKvu-5joD9yNM:https://www.1010tires.com/images/wheels/super/konig_runaway_black_lg_super.jpg
Also i'm going to sell my OEM style carbon fiber hood for $150....Its fadding but a wax and buff will get it looking like new in no time.
Clear is messed up on 1 spot but you cant notice it unless your looking for it. The points on the corners of the hood are kinda dinged up from the previous owner standing it up on the hing part but overall for 150 its a great deal....If anyone wants it ill bring it through on saturday.
KrumbZ 05-26-2009, 11:29 AM when i got my header installed on the 8, the header was leaning against the crossmember and that cause vibration whenever you let go the clutch, so i bought a brace kit to replace the crossmember and now the vibration is not that bad, again my header is from boostbrothers.

yeah, me too, I'm kinda debating between two item right now, one is the header and the other is COBB AP. I guess i can go for the header first then wait for another...century to get the AP. lol. I would love to buy a used AP if there is one.

But then you wont get the custom car tune.......Better to buy it from MM and get the custom tune for free.

besides, I gotta hit up juansito now.
Juansito 05-31-2009, 01:04 PM GAMBEAN dude, thanks for so much for everything last night man you are the man dude!
That HEADER INSTALL was a str8 up bitch!!! 2 stops to petboys 2 stops to the hardware store 2 cases of Heinekens and some BBQ and in total about 7-8 hours we got it installed.
We had to remove the fucking crossmember cause you cant fit the damn RB header in cause it sticks out 2 much. plus the dickhead that sold me the header didnt give me the bolts for the damn emissions air pump and those were a fucking bitch to get installed too......
Now the good....Im not joking when i say the RB header increases low end RPM like a bitch!!! Its not no butt dyno either and it sounds awesome!!! The speed to redline is way faster than before and i know i redline my car almost 20 times a day so when i took it around the block the redline was faster.
If you got the time man its definity worth the install but it is is a bitch -- a lift would make it so much easier! remember you have to remove the cross member when doing it or it wont fit.
Gambean man thanks so much for your hard work.....

I took a few pictures but its pretty easy just time consuming.
The directions from RB are pretty good, I installed my header in the garage on jack stands in about 3hrs. The directions tell you to remove the cross-member and it even tells you the tools needed. The hardest part of the install was tightening the header bolts.
rx8thunder 06-02-2009, 01:07 PM ^ Thoughts on the sound of the header?
po_snake 06-02-2009, 01:28 PM ^ Thoughts on the sound of the header?
I installed a midpipe, header, and intake all in the same day so I can't give a accurate description of the sound or any performance gains.
Juansito 06-02-2009, 01:41 PM Sounds the same with my setup....Just a higher pitch -- you can hear the rotory goodness...

Just did mine yesterday, unfortunately, The guy did it for me messed up the oxygen censor, it was hard to take it off the OEM header so he had to take it out by force. call Napa, quoted me with $300 for a new censor,.....:Eyecrazy::Eyecrazy:. I had to use a used oxygen censor from him, seem like it working fine, but my check light engine is came off. i'm fucked. ..... do you guys know any place that sell that censor for cheap..:banghead:

lancer 06-06-2009, 09:02 PM Wow that sucks.....Try ebay or a used parts place or try the forum........How you liking the rb header though?
after install the header ( it is a GTSPEC Exhaust Header btw), it does sound different from my custom exhaust. I feel a bit different too when i'm driving. I like it alot. i didn't put a gasket on between the header and the midpipe, used long bolt to tight it up. waiting for new set of spark plugs and spark plugs wire, after that the stabilizer ground kit, and then the AP, I hope to gain about 240 Whp after all the NA with the AP. so far I have, motorsport pulley system, ACT pro flightwheel, Exedy Stage 1 clutch, AEM intake, custom exhaust, Gt Spec Header. do you think i can get about 240 Whp with the AP?
rx8thunder 06-06-2009, 09:16 PM ^ No, 240 WHP for NA is not realistic. Be happy with anything north of 200
lancer 06-06-2009, 09:59 PM ^ No, 240 WHP for NA is not realistic. Be happy with anything north of 200
:Eyecrazy::Eyecrazy::Eyecrazy::banghead::banghead: . man, that is suck. so much money for some little gain. 200 WHP before or after the AP
rx8thunder 06-06-2009, 10:07 PM ^ After AP. With my mods and Mazdamaniac Cobb Tune, I got 204 WHP
lancer 06-06-2009, 10:23 PM ^ After AP. With my mods and Mazdamaniac Cobb Tune, I got 204 WHP
so there is only about 20 WHP gain after all, what was it before AP.
rx8thunder 06-06-2009, 10:25 PM Didn't do a before and after but most stock 8's seem to do between 170 and 180 WHP on a Dynojet
shazy 06-06-2009, 11:34 PM Get an ignition system, like BHR and change all your plugs and wires. When you will do a dyno with everything tuned with the Ignition system and new spark plugs, you might just hit 210whp.
shazy 06-06-2009, 11:35 PM You also need to change your ignition system to something better and change your plugs and wires. When you get all that done and tuned, you should be able to get around 210whp.
Frosty288 10-13-2009, 06:06 PM GAMBEAN dude, thanks for so much for everything last night man you are the man dude!
I know this thread is a few months old, but this information is priceless.
You need to remove the crossmember, or you will be cursing a storm trying to get it through the space.
ODDDOOD 12-18-2009, 08:52 AM I am currently saving some $ so that I can get the RB header and install it in the spring '10 (maybe winter '09 if I get the urge).
Are there any specialized tools needed for the job? I have the basics; socket set, universal joints in all necessary sizes, jack & stands... Just making sure there isn't some crazy thing needed that will stump me half-way through the install.
Thanks for all the members who have posted pictures and instructions to this point...this is the exact thread I needed.
Also, if anyone knows of other good "header installation threads" please post links...I can't find any other relevant ones.
michaelsk8er 12-18-2009, 10:49 AM No special tools are needed. You need basic hand tools, a breaker bar or air tools to get the bracing out is a big plus. Remove the engine mount and you're all set. I'd recommend recruiting a friend to help, it really helps.
