View Full Version : Jiffy Lube is buying me a transmission.
notorque 01-27-2009, 08:53 PM First off, dont do like I did and choose them out of lazy impatience.
I went to jiffy because the local mazda dealer is about 25 minutes away and had a 2 day wait, where as the jiffy lube was only 2 blocks away.
With that being said, I went there for the typical oil change, and since my car is at 35000 miles I decided to get my tranny oil changed.
As soon as I left the jiffy, I notice my gearbox making a loud whine, sounded just like a ported supercharger.... NOT GOOD.....
I took my car back to them on saturday and complained, the "tech" if thats what you can call him. asked me to drive the car across the parking lot so he could hear it, once again, loud as crap whine coming out of first....his response, and i quote, "oh that is normal for a manual"......I was dumb founded.....at which point I left and went home.
Since it was changed on a friday at 5pm the dealership was closed and also on saturday. I managed to get my car in there today, the 27th, since that was the only opening. After about 30 minutes the service ASE certified tech comes in the lobby holding a cup with this black sludge......and according to the cup there was only .9 ounces of tranny fluid in my car with the consistency of honey. He said he had to wait 15 minutes for that much to run out.
Thankfully the dealership is very motivated, and said that this is NOT the first time they have had to fix jiffy lubes mistakes. So with thier help, they contacted jiffy corporate headquarters, and now jiffy is sending me a 98 dollar check for what I paid for mazda to check it and the reimbursment for the original "Change". AND they are going to pay for my new tranny.......so for the next week I have my car, or until the tranny comes in and I take it there....I am left with a rather LARGE peice of metal taking up space in my garage.......
karstman7 01-27-2009, 09:01 PM so let me understand....they never changed it or just drained it and forgot to fill? what happened? sounds like you work with a good dealership....
tunerwannab 01-27-2009, 09:01 PM That sucks. I have worked at jiffy lube for over six years and i hate to say I have worked with many idiots in my time there. Every few months we get a list of warrenties caused by all the stores in our region and I am not suprised why laces like us have a bad reputation.
Good luck and DO NOT let them try to stiff you in any way. They will get you a rental car if you ask. And do not let them try to cheap out on the repair. they will basically pay only what you make them. But they will pay the full repair. I am suprised they didn't try to get your tranny rebuilt instead of replaced.
CarAndDriver 01-27-2009, 10:26 PM Sorry to hear. Where are you located? Maybe you could find a good mechanic in your area from others on here.
Ross_Dawg 01-27-2009, 11:02 PM Damn that sucks, I'm definitely sticking to the dealer for tranny flushes...
dondo 01-28-2009, 12:04 AM sorry to hear it man. i also wonder if they just forgot to fill it...
tunerwannab 01-28-2009, 01:34 AM the guy was probably working on three cars at once trying to be fast but just ended up being stupid. put in the drain plug walked away then never filled it.
My advice is if you don't know anyone there then just stand in front of your car and watch them do the work. Worst that happens is that you annoy them.
alz0rz 01-28-2009, 01:38 AM that's what it is.. some techs don't have the capacity to multitask and make simple but BIG mistakes like these.
though everything is working out for you and it's great that you have such a cooperative dealership.
RotoRocket 01-28-2009, 03:01 AM That's great.
I detest Jiffy Lube and hope they're soon out of business. The sooner the better.
Biggest scam-business model in the world, and most of them are completely dishonest and unethical selling unneeded services and products to naive customers (who are lucky to actually get the work performed).
Jack You Off Lube Sucks FTW!!!
rx8phase1 01-28-2009, 03:12 AM damn that sucks...but i dont know why alot of people hate on them theyre a business like everyone else of course theyre gonna tell you to buy things u dont need they need to make money and if u fall for it it's ur fault not theirs for example if you go to a sports store theyre always gonna tell you to buy the most expensive stuff and if that dont wrk they will tell you to buy a bunch of otherr bs stuff but actually buying well thats just ur fault everyone does this even restaraunts.
Shinka_MJR 01-28-2009, 08:14 AM well now you have a chance to upgrade tranny components. light weight flywheel, performance clutch... the works!
sorry to hear you were served lemons but you have more than enough now to make killer lemonade.
btw, wishing ANYONE out of a job is just plain shitty. Yes, companies try to upsell. that's their job. However, wishing someone out of a job... dude you just need punched in the mouth 17 times by every single person who works for that company. No one deserves to be out of work. (just like i am sure you are thinking you dont deservepunched for thinking that way) You simply see it as revenge against one person... fuktard, do you even consider the consequences of that one person losing his job and who it affects dowbn the line? No. you just like talking big and hoping people rally around your meladramatic, vengeance seeking, flag waving stupidity. Ya, JiffyLube fuggered up. Ya, the "tech" probably can't multi-task. Yep, he will probably lose his job because now that store has to buy someone a new tranny... But wishing someone to lose their job. You sir, and everyone who is like minded... sucks unwashed monkey nuts. Kharma is a bitch. rest assured, she will prove it to you.
newguy 01-28-2009, 08:21 AM my 1st job after hs was jiffy lube and i never fucked up but I didnt know a thing about an automobile. I learned alot about maintenance in the 2 yrs I was there while attending night courses in electronics although it was on other peoples vehicles:lol:
I did once see a guy forget to put an oil drain plug back in so the guy upstairs added oil and itdrained right thru then sent the customer off. The tech felt really bad about it as the owner had to buy a new block.
newguy 01-28-2009, 08:41 AM oh man ijust remembered this, IF YOUR WIFE WEARS A SKIRT TO JL HAVE HER STAND BACK OF THE BAY :)
The asst mngr at my JL had a friend who worked under hood and would squirt oil around the vavle cover of cars driven by attractive females in skirts and have the underhood tech go get the ladies to have them look at the created "leak". All this while the asst mngr would slip downstairs under her car to look up her skirt!! What a whack job he was, your typical short round bearded redneck. I heard he was caught and fired by the owner some years after I had left.
Anyways check this out, the Rockefellers (Illuminati) and the CIA froze Dwight Eisenhower out of the UFO conspiracy in 1953 and apparently brokered a deal with the "tall whites" to operate a facility at Groom Lake w/ the upside for us being zero-loss energy sources. The small "greys" have been friendly as well but have a less democratic society. There are many other races here as well mostly under our oceans, all friendly as any one of them could have ended us long ago. Full disclosure is coming soon. Im just hoping for an anti-gravity powered RX soon :)

Razz1 01-28-2009, 08:54 AM Jeepers creepers.........
Where was your dad?
Didn't he teach you mechanics and how the world works?
gp to a local club meet and find a good mechanic through our members.
notorque 01-28-2009, 10:39 AM Yeah, he forgot to fill it back up, there were only two cars there as well, so it wasnt a multitask issue seeming his coworker was on the other car....I have a suspicion he was a pothead though......anywho, thats a good idea to have them change the clutch and flywheel, im gonna talk to them about that today, good look man.
Shinka_MJR 01-28-2009, 10:42 AM Yeah, he forgot to fill it back up, there were only two cars there as well, so it wasnt a multitask issue seeming his coworker was on the other car....I have a suspicion he was a pothead though......anywho, thats a good idea to have them change the clutch and flywheel, im gonna talk to them about that today, good look man.
Hey, no prob! Ya, i wouldn't do any less that the whole thing... that would include clutch and flywheel. Tranny is just something that will make you hate your car when you keep having problems with it. Do an entire swap of everything and you wont have to worry in the future about whether if one of those other parts failed due to their mistake.
good luck!
alnielsen 01-28-2009, 10:52 AM Jiffy Lube once didn't tighten up the drain plug on one of my cars about 20 yrs ago. I caught it, while I was driving, as the oil was still flowing out. Fortunately, there was an auto parts store across the street and I was able to make a quick repair.
Socket7 01-28-2009, 12:20 PM Jiffy lube once tried to sell me an oil flush because of sludge in my engine. Tech showed me his finger covered in something he said came from my engine. I told him I'd have my regular mechanic look at it. Then he told me my PCV valve was bad. I told him I'd have my regular mechanic check that too.
While driving home, smoke started coming out from under my hood. The tech had spilled oil when re-filling, and it was dripping down onto the hot exhaust manifold and smoking.
I do my own oil changes now, or let the dealership do it for me.
pdxhak 01-28-2009, 12:37 PM Wow that sucks. You hear so many horror stories about jiffy lube. Good to see Mazda helped you get your money back and a new tranny!
EdwardsB 01-28-2009, 12:42 PM That is why I buy a tube and funnel, and get someone to help me change my tranny fluid. Plus it is cheaper this way.
At least they are being responsible for their mistake.
notorque 01-28-2009, 01:28 PM I normally do the stuff my self, but i was out of propane for the garage heater, and its friggin cold for some reason out here in VA, thats what i get for bein lazy though...
oh and the dealership is hampton mazda chevrolet off of west mercury in the hampton roads area, they are really cool there, they completely ignored the fact I have nitrous on my car. I guess cuz they figure its an 04, the motor is gonna go bad anyways....or so ive been told.
nycgps 01-28-2009, 01:52 PM I change all da fluids myself.
I used to just get my own fluid and have some garage to do it for me for 12 bux. but I free time, and I am sure I cared my car more than anyone else. so. there u go.
Good thing they're paying for your tranny.
PatN217 01-28-2009, 02:22 PM Ill piggy back on this topic and share a little story about a great experience at Midas. I was in a time crunch as well and needed the brake pads changed out. I had an autocross coming up and couldn't get over to the self service garage (im on a naval base) to change them out myself before the weekend. So I took the car mid week over to Midas to have them do the work. I told them exactly what I wanted done and made it clear that they were not to touch any other part of the car except the brakes. I get a phone call within an hour of dropping the car off. Its the manager asking me to please come back to the shop because there has been an accident. I get back to Midas to see my 8 sitting in the parking lot about four feet shorter in length than it should have been. Turns out one of the techs thought my 8 was too cool not to take for a joy ride. I'm sure he enjoyed it right up until the 5 car accident he caused. Needless to say I didn't autocross that weekend and I didnt get my pads replaced. The stupid Midas store wouldn't even throw in a free set of pads. They're just lucky legal action wouldn't be worth the trouble.
From that point I do all the work on my car - Ill only take it to the dealership for something major like the engine replacement I just had to do.
F*&K THE MIDAS TOUCH!!
04RX8man 01-28-2009, 03:04 PM that sucks hopefully everything works out good for u!

So wait... they wrecked your car and they didn't do anything to make it right? Your insurance ended up paying for it?? That's bullshit! Any respectable place would've fired the grease monkey who did that on the spot and be falling all over themselves to pay for the best body shop in town to fix it. Thats absolutely ridiculous. Free work should have been a given.

I would have taken them to court and busted their balls for all the money I could get! That's just unacceptable. Please tell me you at least got something extra out of it...lol No free pads...shiiiit.
RotoRocket 01-28-2009, 04:19 PM For the record, in case someone was talking to ME, I never wished and never would wish anyone who makes an INNOCENT mistake out of a job.
I absolutely think Jiffy Lube is a case of major failure as there have been documented reports by the thousands about that chain, in particular, not just upselling, but committing outright fraud in every state in the U.S., including not changing filters that they charge for (and let people think they did), resuing motor oil, charging for coolant flush and fills that they don't do, telling little old ladies that their wipers need replacing on a newish Camry with 5k miles on it (that's theft, not upselling). etc., etc., etc.
So fuck Jiffy Lube, and if you were talking to ME, and you don't like my comment, fuck YOU TOO.
If you weren't talking to me, please disregard.

I was talking about Pat's post... I think taking a customer's car out for a joyride is enough grounds for a termination of employment... let alone the fact that he wrecked it? Dear God... if that would've happened to my car the mighty hammer of my wrath would've fallen hard.

No joke, that's just insane. I would probably have exploded in rage, blacked out and came to with blood all over the walls...Who's blood? Nobody knows.

neXib 01-28-2009, 06:26 PM I dunno about over there, but here your car is covered by the shops insurance when you've handed it off. So any theft/crap that happens there, they have to cover.

I'm sorry you or someone you know got screwed at some point but in 6 1/2 years I have never once done any of the things you have mentioned. I have seen it happen but I have always reported it and 99% of the time someone was fired for it.
So please don't make generalizations about ALL of the employee's of a corperation. My mom and grandmother have always used juffy lube and I always keep that in mind when I deal with people who come in.
The only difference between most quick lube places and jiffy lube is that we have about 100 times as many stores so if something happens it makes the news. I see cars EVERY day that come from dealers "trusted" mechanics and other big name places that for some reason still have our filters in them even though the customer went somewhere else in between visits to us.

I have no doubt there are honest JL employees, but I've seen way too many bad ones so the brand is kind of tarnished in my mind.
Maybe human nature.

Sadly thats true to an extent. We are CONSTANTLY told we need to sell more but I just ignore it. I offer the services to customers and if they dont want it fine if so thats cool.
Look up on you tube the jiffy lube scam from a few years ago. The company that owns my store owns the ones in LA also. After that they fired 1 DM 2 store MGR and took that 2 regions away from that regional mgr.

PatN217 01-29-2009, 02:36 PM Midas's insurance did cover all the repairs. The problem about trying to take them to court is that I would have had to prove that he was joy riding and not doing their bullshit car inspection. Despite telling them specifically that I just wanted the pads replaced they did their "complete coverage" inspection. I have no clue if that involves a test drive BEFORE doing the work or not. I would have had to do some tricky investigating to determine if the mechanic was supposed to drive the car before working on it or if the driver deviated from the standard test drive path. With my schedule in the Navy that was just not going to happen. The best I can do now is bad mouth Midas all I can and tell people not to take their cars to these types of places.
9krpmrx8 01-29-2009, 03:08 PM Shit like this can happen anywhere but recently it has been very cold and I met a guy who manages the Jiffy Lube near my house so I figured I'd let them do it for the convenience so I took him five quarts of castrol GTX and they changed my oil. Well, the next day I drove to my parents house (two hours away) and when I got there I was checking my oil and I noticed a Wix filter (the brand I use when doing it myself) So, I called Jiffylube and spoke to the duded and asked what brand they used and it was not WIX. So, I was pissed and I brought it back right away that Monday and they went and bought Castrol and replaced my filter and oil.

Good thing BHR doesn't follow this model. I spend as much time telling prospects that they DO NOT need certain things, sometimes BHR's own product, as I do telling them what they might want to consider when doing mods to their RX-8. I can also tell them WHY I specifically prefer a given product versus another.
To me, that is what a business is supposed to do and how it is supposed to treat people.
I honestly believe that one need not lie, cheat, nor steal in order to make a decent living doing what one loves.
9krpmrx8 02-02-2009, 10:38 AM I agree 100% Charles. I dont tell patients to come in for a visit if they don't need too.
newguy 02-03-2009, 12:34 AM as well as looking up skirts from the pit my mngr would have an oil squirter botttle w/dirty fluids to try and sell diff/trans changes. :)
notorque 02-03-2009, 08:46 AM Ok, so i got the letter of authorization (I only had phone auth before) from jiffy lube today in contract form, saying that they will pay for the tranny, and all related costs. including auto rental. They will probably stick me in a chevy cobalt :P oh well, it will make me appreciate the 8 more when i get it back.
Im taking my baby into mazda now, the nice, and very hot lady there said i just gotta bring in the letter and forget my car is there until they call me......so i guess that means they are going to go after jiffy. She said that the stuff still isnt in, but not being able to drive my car i dont mind. She did say my car will be there about a week.....maybe two :( i want to cry......
elysium19 05-29-2009, 12:08 PM I use jiffy lube for my oil changes. I just don't have the time to do it myself, and it's 10 bucks more.
That said, I always stand in the bay or in the driveway looking in (even they they usually direct me towards the waiting area initially) and keep a close eye on what they're doing. I do this in a respectful way, not hounding them at all, and usually chat it up a little bit as they don't see too many rx-8's to be honest. They realize that I care a lot about the car and jsut want to keep an eye on things, and i feel like they perk up and pay a little extra attention to what they're doing, as well.
Also, I very clearly say "I just want the oil change" I don't want the rest of the "full service" stuff like cleaning windows filling the washer fluid, vaccuuming inside, etc. Just the oil, less opportunity to do something stupid or make a mess.
Keep an eye on things, and you shouldn't have problems.
