but does anyone think all the exhuasts out right now look the same

panda

i think they are all very similar, but are they ever going to look different? they all have to be dual exhausts. so they all lok pretty much the same,
this one says hks on it though :-)
it looks nice, the tips are very large but they look badass
i cant wait to hear what it sounds like

any dynos?

HKS in CA supposedly received two exhausts, one they kept for an employ to put on his car the other was sent to Miami.

The car in CA was dyno'd 4 times to get an avg base line of 176HP

The exhaust was put on and dyno'd 4 more times to get an avg of 185HP

Not bad considering it is a NA car. :)

oh, and before you ask... I have no idea what the conditions were when dyno'd nor do I have access to those dyno sheets. :p

lol.....the more and more exhaust systems i see for the rx-8, the more i am afraid i can only afford the borla. not knocking the borla by any means, but i am too poor to throw over a grand for something that will perform and look approximatley the same as something that can be bought for half the price.

I'm still waiting for someone to come out with just a single tip exhaust for this car. They have them for the 2nd gen RX-7. It's not that I like them or think they look better. Far from it actually. I just like hearing all the foolish people argue over why one is better than the other. :D

There are more and more people coming out with exhausts for the RX-8. Face the real facts. The exhaust only needs so much flow through it. If every exhaust out there meets these needs then one will probably not do any better than another one that also flows enough. Once you hit the peak you can't do any better. It doesn't matter which name is stamped on it or how much it costs. Different mufflers do sound different though so most likely you are going to pay more or less for a certain type of sound. In all truth if you have a little welding skill or can get it done for cheap, you can get an exhaust that performs just as well as most of the aftermarket companies but for a fraction of the price. I have always built my own exhaust systems for my RX-7s and the RX-8 will be no exception. If you are willing to pay $1200 for an exhaust system then it's all good. Do what you like and that is all that matters. I personally would rather make one for less than $300 total and have equal performance but much more money left over to spend on other parts of the car. But that is just me. I do admit though that there are some really nice aftermarket systems out there and some of them just sound great. I'm just cheap I guess! :D

Genom
12-06-2003, 09:57 PM
rotarygod: If I had welding equpiment or easy access to it, I would learn to make my own.

Sadly, thats not an option for now so a Borla I will get.

Unless you wanna make me one. But a roadtrip to Texas for an exaust might be a bit much.

This being like ya said, not much difference between them and Borlas are the ones I can get the cheapest right now.

For those of you that don't want your exhaust to look stock standard, consider this:

Lock & Load
12-10-2003, 12:17 AM
Or this:

These were done in photoshop, the exhaust is off the Chrysler Crossfire. Maybe the exhaust could be of similar shape to the inner aluminium shaped protectective cover for the RX8

(Maybe some of the exhaust manufacturers could start thinking outside the circle. Why spend all the money on a system that looks the same as the stock standard one but in some cases not as good).

mikeb
12-10-2003, 12:22 AM
I like your photoshop with one tip on each side but it fits the lines on the ms kit

dual on both sides is too much IMO

mike b

YEAH the more i think about the single ones the more i like them Why spend your hard earned money just to have an exact replica of the stock standard exhaust ?( THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS)

If i decide to change mine i think i will have them designed to follow the lines of the inner plastic bumpers as on the MAZDA SPEED.

YOU HAVE GOOD TASTE.

I like the idea of rotary-shaped tips.

XeRo
12-10-2003, 08:44 AM
The double tipped square opening looked to much like a Trans-Am..yyyuuucckkkkk...but as someone photoshopped a while back in another post, a central (boxter type) might look good...even better fitted in the rear rotary symbol...hey now that's an idea...

AlexCisneros

The exhaust is at the store! WOW! it is even nicer in person. As far as pricing, it is comparable to the exhausts available in Japan including GReddy.

Don't quote me, but from what I heard the GReddy exhaust retails for about $1100 in Japan. It's cheaper here because they (don't quote me, it's what I heard) are made in Mexico while the HKS exhaust is built in Japan.

HP wise, most of the exhausts will yield nearly identical results. It seems that what you want to pay depends less on performance and more on weight, sound, and appearance.

But damn! the HKS looks sweet!

off to the dyno for baseline runs...

Keep in mind that is MSRP (or what someone pays when they are silly enough to get it from HKS) and it will be a fair amount cheaper when purchased through an aftermarket vendor. Lastly HKS is not cheap, but they always make good qulity parts. Their Turbos are some of the most well made in the business and their welds and materials are almost always top notch.

As a frame of reference the HKS Hi-Power is listed at $670 but can be had for $550 shipped rather easily.

I like the idea of rotary-shaped tips.

I mentioned both of these ideas a while back, as well. I don't understand why someone doesn't try to make a straight thru single tip design ala Porsche design. You could have that bad boy dump the exhaust right out the middle of the rear bumper cover--where the rotor shaped accent is. Like Omicron said, make a rotor shaped tip just for coolness factor. A custom bumper may cost a little, but worth it if the design was superior to other exhausts.

It just seems like a staight thru design would be better just for the fact that it has far less bends and less piping.

Sadly no, not on my car, but a local buddy just had it put on his 8. First of all, the stock unit is heavy. The HKS was about 30 pounds on a guess. but the important part is how it works right? Welp the sound is much throatier than the stock or Borla units. There is also a definit HP increase as witnessed by 3 different guys testing the car. Alex will be posting pictures and a clip later on today if not tonight (gonna try for some flames).

But it gets a big thumbs up from me at least.

If someone could host the video I could put it up, though tonight I will try to capture some flames.

The sound is sooo nice. I happened to have the video of the borla in my lap top and played both the HKS vid and borla vid back to back.

I know it's not a good comparison, but the Borla sounded "raspier" and the HKS was much deeper. At Idle it sounds almost stock (almost ;) ).

Whatever they put into those mufflers works. Oh and the butt dyno definitely feels improvement.

ok, to my question:

is this exhaust street-legal? (with flames, that's really cool)

AlexCisneros
12-16-2003, 07:44 AM
Well the price is actually $1295 MSRP. I have heard of some places selling them for under that so it's up to the performance shop you feel comfortable with. AFAIK it's a 60 State Legal exhaust as it complies with the 95dba restrictions and does not replace the cat.

The Flames are due to the fact that the car runs so rich.

Once Alex gets it to me I can edit out the parts we dont need, recompress it, etc. I just need him to send it ovah! :D

mental: I have only heard 1 8 exhaust have a ricey bleat to it and the HKS is not it. The sound is a much deaper rumble than the borla but it's VERY quiet at idle. WOT starts out bassy rumbly, and while the stock setup turns into a pissed off hornet nest, the HKS is more like a pissed off hornet nest getting buzz bombed by some killer wasps while killer bee's take potshots. It's basically the stock sound, only much more present and deep.

Once I get the vids they go up.

The file is currently uploading to my server so it might not be playable immediatly after I post this. Just give it 5 minutes or so. This was the first clip taken with a digicam, not vid cam so it's OK'ish. I will be borrowing a good camera for the little recording session we wanna do this weekend though.

When I say I have something personal to take care of it's cause I dont have the 2 hours to dick around reconverting the file to make it easier on others, uploading, testing etc. I thought a tiny preview would at least be apreciated.

YOUR satisfaction with something I am trying to do to be nice matters NOTHING to me. And if ya dont like it, well then shut up. I have no patience for unapreciative jerks.

Sounds great! Appreciate your taste in color also, it seems great minds do think alike. Are you having any problems with the larger pipes heating the plastic? My wife will only cooperate with a few small modifications and this is one of them, well, as long as you aren't melting your exhaust outlets (j/j). Sounds excellent, especially compared to the fools around here that stick those 6" pipes on the back of their $10,000 rides. Isn't that ridiculous.

Thats a guy named Armando's car. The specs on the HKS are:

65mm Piping Diameter
Dual 100mm LM-1 Exhaust Tips

The greddy has much larger oval tips. They are 115 x 110mm and it uses (I think) the same 65mm piping. I drove my car for about 130 miles yesterday and checked the plastic around the tips. Since the tips actually extend a bit farther out, and the large size seems to slow the hot exhaust a little, while the plastic gets hot, it is nowhere near melting. Of course this was ll mild driving. We'll have to see how well they handle the next track event.

This afternoon I should get the camera to do the GReddy clip.

Finally, thanks for the well-wishers. She is doing pretty good now. My comment was directly at mrtux so dont ya'll feel bad. I know how hard it can be to hear about the stuff and not get it (like CZ's info on the stage 1 mod) but there's 2 ways to ask about it, and that one was not the right way.

I ordered my hks exhaust from the rx8 store about a week ago. I was wondering how difficult the instalation was, assuming you did it yourself. Because i was planning on doing it myself, but i heard that installing other aftermarket exhausts on the rx8 have been difficult.
