Always remember, the RCMP use instant on radar, and if there is no other traffic, you will get no warning. My V1 even tells me where the photo radar is :)

Also, you can individually turn off the different bands and laser as well if all you get is false warnings from other microwave sources.

In your position, I would get a Bel. Made in Canada, so quite a bit cheaper here, and rated very competitive to the V1.

Get a '9' series (the latest) and pay enough that you get the switch off option for each band, because they don't use 'X' around here, and that will stop 90% of falses.

International and Visions have a good selection, and they get them REAL cheaply, their cost is way down, so haggle/look for sales. (try not to buy any 'Nuance' speakers while you're there!)

How come you guys from Alberta have ALL the fun?? No prov. sales tax, radar detectors are legal, gaz is cheap... anything else you wanna add on my "envy" list?

So... speaking theoritically of course.. if somebody lived in a province where they were not legal, and thoughts on stealth mounting a radar detector? Theoretically of course.... :)

Are there any web sites that set forth the types of radar used. I'm not certain if my locality uses X band. Most time when it's ka band I see a cop, but I don't remember about the x band warnings (I think they're usually false). Once I was coming up to an accident and I received the new "emergency info broadcast" or whatever it's called.

Stealth mounting is not hard. The V1 even has a remote lite box you can put in the dash. Problem is, your eastern constabulary use radar detector detectors. If the unit is on, they may know. This changes as time marches on. The V1 (and others) put in radar detector detector detectors, then the radar manufs. put in radar detector detector detector detectors, etc. Spy vs spy.

My V1 has saved me from tickets enough to pay for itself, but just driving with intelligence and eyes open can do 90% of the savings.

Re the "Alberta advantage", hard to get a speeding ticket when it's -18 C (today). Conditions not conducive to "playing".

We are lucky enough here in PQ not to have front plates as well. U used radar detectors with my RX7 here... got caught 3 times and the last fine was about 250$. I think it is now up to 600 or 700 bucks, way too high plus they cheat with the detectors of detectors... NOT FAIR.

VG-2 protection
Some states and localities have passed laws banning radar detectors. By FCC definition, this should be illegal, as federal law mandates that the reception of radio frequencies is in the public domain. It's possible that in the future, the federal government will step in and declare these laws invalid. But for the time being, using and possessing a radar detector in certain areas can bring fines and equipment confiscation.

The oscillators used in almost all radar detectors (particularly those used to receive the X band) leak a signal that can be detected. Particularly in areas where radar detectors are illegal, police use a system known as VG-2--in essence, a radar-detector detector. These detectors have a range anywhere from 0.5 mile to 2 miles. Some of the more expensive radar detectors use an oscillator undetectable by the VG-2 system (it still leaks, but on a frequency that the VG-2 system cannot detect).

However, the VG-2, being a detector itself, also leaks a discernible signal. The radar detectors with VG-2 protection are capable of detecting these leaks. The units will register a VG-2 detection and then shut themselves down until the VG-2 signal is no longer being received. During this time, receipt of radar signals is not possible, so drive with extra caution.

It was freakin cheap, and that's back with canuck money wasn't worth as much as it is now... merely 0,74 back then ;)

Got them for 119USD each as part of a group buy, cost me roughly 165$CAD shipping included. Been very reliable and didn't get caught.

I wouldn't bother with any kind of radar detector in Ontario. The Ontario OPP have the best "radar detector detectors" around.. :(
