Will these work on cars other than the 8? The reason I ask is because I have a friend with a 2007 Honda Civic and she loves my blue ones I got from you. She really wants a kit, so I was wondering if you would be willing to make one if she is interested? Can you do colors other than red, white, and blue?

Rotary Rasp

Sorry for not replying sooner. These lights will work in any car. The problem is finding the wires to connect them to. If you're able to following the wires from the door lights then you could just tap them there. Otherwise it might take some time locating the wires under the dash. -- If you lived closer, I'd do it for you.

Two questions for you..

Still have any Reds left?
If so, what would be the best way to wire it with a SWITCH?

I'd love it have it wired into the parking/running lights, but I'm worried that they might be a bit distracting while driving. I'd love some sort of Kill switch that would turn them off while driving.

Yes, I still have red.

Hooking them to a switch is very easy. Radio shack has dozens of switches that will work. All you have to do is put the switch between the lights and the car. Shoot me a PM and I'll help you pick out a switch and provide you with whatever info you may need

Thanks.

Sales have died down to just one or two orders per week. The new car fund is doing alright though. I've been saving as much as a I can and not spending as much. As of last week, I technically already ordered a new car... but it won't arrive till x-mas which means I have until then to gather more money for the down payment.

If you don't mind me asking, what car do you plan on getting ?

I want to thank everyone for their help. The sales from this thread greatly helped with the down payment. After many months, my insurance paid out on the rx8 and I actually got much more than I was expecting. The combination of my insurance and this thread helped me afford such a nice car.

Thank you all!

I'm going to continue selling the footwell lights until I run out of inventory. After that, I will not be making anymore. I encourage everyone that is interested to buy now.

I have the following left:

1 White
4 Blue
8 Red

Rasp: CONGRAT on the car man, after what happened to your RX-8, it's the very least you deserved.

Besides, I see this thread as a complete WIN-WIN for everyone involved. We get great parts and you end up with a great car.
With so few kits left, you guys better jump on them as they'll be gone QUICKLY.

Personally I like the light from the blue ones better... however since the rest of the internal lighting is red , I went with the red.

However, there is nothing stopping you from putting BOTH in with a switch to toggle the color ;)

Thought I would try you on here as I'm not having any luck with email. I received the footwell lighting kit & everything looks great, but no instructions on which wires to tap. I have the little sheet with the link to your website (where I'm guessing the instructions are), but the site is down. I get the following error message (removed the link to website for your privacy):

Received the lights Thursday and installed this morning. They look awesome.

Took less than 5 minutes to mount them and run the wires to the connection points and about 45 mins to connect. The quick connectors had to be crimped and crimped and crimped in a VERY tight location but it finally worked.

Rasp - great job on the product and on the instructions. Thanks.

These lights are completely legal. They are installed on the inside of the car and cannot be seen from the outside.

I finished installing mine tonight. I was going to post Pics, but considering I got the red ones and Rotary_Power's pic looks Sooo much cleaner than mine I'll pass :) Just imagine his without the Nav option and you have my car hehe.

A few words for those who haven't puchased any yet, or have yet to install.

Rasp did a great job in packaging exactly what you need and the instructions he posted on the web (You get the URL when you purchase) are top notch. I had a few little issues which I though others might want to be aware of before they attempt to install thiers. Note: This is just for informational purposes to save people a bit of trouble, and NOT meant to knock Rasp in any way.

1) A Word on Wiring location: Installation is rather 'simple', however the location where you need to get at the wires is a big pain. There are quite a few bundles of wires under your steering wheel, on the left side.. that's where you'll wire this in. Having a Trunk-Monkey(tm) would have been very useful as I had to actually lie on my back on the driver seat with my head at the pedals in order to get to the wires.. it was not fun :) Once you find the wires it's rather easy.

2) Method to use: I'd highly suggest installing via the "running lights" method over the dome lights. Beyond the practical benefits of not having to have the door open, the wiring points are much easier to locate and slightly easier to get too.

3) Switches: I used a switch like many others have mentioned. The one I choose is one I had from Radio Shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103602&tab=custRatings), and it's a 3 pole switch. To wire it up is rather simple. The poles are marked "Power", "Load" and "Ground". All of Rasps BLACK wires + the Tapped wire for the ground (color varies on method) go to the "Ground" pole. The Green wires from Rasp's lights go to the "Load" pole. And the remaining Power wire you tapped (The color varies based on install method again) goes to the "Power" pole.

I've seen this same type of switch at Advanced Auto Parts for around 8bucks.

4) Opps!!! - Should you manage to hook the wires up WRONG, and blow a fuse All is not lost! (We'll not discuss how I found this out).
The fuse for the Running Light version is located under the hood fuse panel, and is labeled "Illum". It controls all of the inside dash "red" illuminations, plus the door lock illuminations. You can run your car without them while you run out to an autoshop to replace it. The speedometer and such are fine, just won't be in red at night. There is ONE spare 10amp fuse in the panel inside the cabin near the drivers left leg. So you have 2 shots at wiring it up right before you need to pick up a few more.

All in all they look great. I think they don't seem as bright as some of the other colors simply because they are red but to me they match the other car lights so I am happy with them.

Since my switch is a little different, here's a pic of it installed... Note: many of those scratches are not from this install, but when I originally used the switch for something else ages ago, and wasn't very careful about removing it :(

Rotary Rasp
01-25-2009, 04:58 AM
Awesome review DaGnome!

I agree that actually getting to the running light wires is a tad easier then the dome light wires. On a side note, being a contortionist will greatly help you install the lights; however, it's not required. ;)

Wiring it to a switch is not a problem, although what power source did you use with the switch? Don't you have to have a constant source to turn it on whenever you want? Sorry I should've been more specific the first time. Thanks in advance

it depends....

for the running lights, yes, you do.... however

the dome lights use a neutral switching circuit, so you'd need a constaint ground.... which is pretty much any metal in the car.

Very nice info. So if you hook the switch up to the running lights as you did, whenever you hit the switch on do they come on or do you have to have the running lights on first for them to work? Thanks in advance.

The running lights have to be on, since that's where the power is tapped into.

I suppose it COULD be possible to tap the power to another circuit, say the horn, or power seat/door stuff, but I don't know the wiring enough to know which one has the correct voltage and isn't critical should you blow the fuse.

This isn't hard. Just tap the ground(body) rather than the black/green wire in the dome light wiring guide.

URrrrggggg!!!!! DAMN!!!!

Ok you sent the red lights didn't tell me they were reds. I set them up to running lights which are suppose to be the blues!!!

The old red ones are broken. I will send that back however you didn't send the blues which have also shorted out!!!

Now I have my reds connected which took me 1/2 or so to fiddle the wires in to only find out that they are not the blues.

Please send the blues with 2 attached on one wire like my drawing... I bought 2sets from you and your suppose to replace the 2. I will leave the reds as my running lights for now till I get the blues and switch them then.

WHAT A WAIST OF TIME!!

I'm not mad at you however if you read my post would have understood that I needed the reds and blues. Plus you never stated which color you sent so I assumed it was the blues...

Not even sure if these will work as my footwells. Send the blues and if it doesn't fit across I will send these back.

Make the blues one on each side of my driver seat and passenger seat with 2 attached.

The pic I posted is on my red seats...:lol2: However you can't tell the color of the lights.

Anyways I still need these ones to replace the broke reds. So that problem is fixed. The single wire should work fine for my footwells. (When I get the blues and switch the new one's from running to footwells I'll let you know then if it works)

Check PM I explained the rest there.

To the untrained eye, all the leds look the same when off. I can tell red from blue even when they are not on. That's how I new the ones you posted were red. They don't call me an led expert for no reason.

I might need you to send back the blue before I ship you the replacements. I'm pretty sure I'm all out of blue but I will check.

Leesha
02-20-2009, 02:59 PM
This is what I mean.... That way I can attach it easier... I have reds as footwells and blues under my seat but want them attached like this as a pair... I'll send back yours when I get them. I don't want to be left without my light...lol... I use the blues as running lights so make sure that if that is done that nothing is going to blow up in my car like my stereo fuse blowing when the first ones broke.

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/Leesha_023/wire.jpg

So the blue leds will run to my running lights like before. The difference is that there are 2 on one wire. One for the front of my seat and the other will go under my seat to attach to the back so the wire should be as long as our seats...

Here is the msg about the blues.

I know you'll send them back, I'm not worried about that. I've already sent you one replacement set on good faith, but I can't you send something I don't have. I'll look later and double check though.

I've been pretty good about helping you get this fixed, more so than many of the vendors I've bought from on this forum in the past. I have to make each one of these by hand and I assure you, it's just as much of a pain in the ass for me as it is for you. I'm sorry that your having issues and I promise to do what I can to rectify the problem.

You said yourself that you did not state the color that you needed and just assumed that it was implied you needed blue, even though the picture you posted was red. I'm sorry and I will fix this issue for you, but can you honestly hold me liable for the mistake?

Msg above shows that I asked for the blues and not reds... in pm I told you about the broken reds and shorting out blues and needed both replaced.

Ok so what now... I'm not sending the blues back because they are still hooked up and I'm following my directions.

How long will I have to wait till you get more... that's another thing... If I disconnect them and you send them months down the line I will forget how I did it all so.... what shall we do?

BTW the blues are also broken. One of them. The one that was shorting out...it would flash on and off and drove me nuts...

I do not think the problem is the strip "shorting out" as you stated. I had the same problem on the initial installation. The problem was actually due to the provided wire splicer because it ended up cutting off the end of the wire (connected to the LED strip) instead of splicing it and therefore had a poor to non-existent connection. This kind...

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll300/odddood/LEDsplicer.jpg

I ended up going to Radio Shack and buying a different style of wire splicer...the same kind I used on my Fog light re-wire.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll300/odddood/wiresplicer.jpg

This style suited my needs better and also gives me the option to disconnect and reconnect them much easier.

Good Luck...

PS...how the heck did you break these? And more than once? They are located in such an obscure place I just don't know how it is possible!

Those are much better, but if you can, make sure yo get the red ones. The blues (in your pic) are for larger wire and may not completely cut through the wire isolation.

Just installed mine through dome light operation, looks good but have to wait until I see them in the dark to get the full effect. Instructions were very easy to follow RR, thanks.

Tip to anyone that is going to install these.... do not do it in cold weather. The adhesive doesn't stick and the zip ties actually snapped on me :lol2:

EDIT: Are the LEDs supposed to flicker while dimming?

flicker? maybe a little due to the fact that they aren't really lights. I didn't notice it at all and you'd be the first to mention it. Is it really obvious, or just a little?

I figured it was probably because they are leds and not traditional bulbs. But no, it is not obvious at all, I just happen to notice it while turning them on and off over and over again lol

Had compliments on them already from people. They are pretty bright at night, two thumbs up rasp.

This is probably a dumb question, but oh well, I'll ask anyway. Anyone have any idea how long these LED lights usually last? I'm interested in hooking mine up to the parking lights and installing a manual switch.

Rotary Rasp

The superflux LEDs I used have a MTBF (mean time between failure) rate of 100,000 hours.

That's over 11 years of continuous operation.

(basically forever)

They are installed under the dash per Rasp's install instructions. I also have a full set of super green LED interior lights, which is what is reflecting off the doors and seats.

hey rodger, ever thought or had any comment to attach a strip to the bottom of each front door? like on the underside of the bin in the door...then hook it up to the dome lights, so when you openthe door, the light shines down by your feet...it sounds cool in my head...not really sure if it would look good though.

My new car has lights under the door similar to what you're talking about. I think it would be too hard to do on the rx-8, and it would require cutting, which most are not willing to do.

I can't promise you'll have your lights by friday, they went out last night.
