View Full Version : SoCal Cops cracking down on modded cars
Spinning Sushi 08-28-2008, 04:34 PM "Over the last three years, Showalter said he has worked with officers from the Ontario and Irwindale police departments, training more than 2,000 officers in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties to spot illegal modifications on cars, which is one of the main ways officers target street racers"
The quote above is part of a larger article in today's L.A. Times. ( The full article can be found on the main web page and in the California/Local section. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-fatalcrash29-2008aug29,0,6038563.story?page=1) There was a tragic and what has been described as "gruesome" street racing accident in the Eagle Rock area last night. Accidents happen regardless of your speed but no one won this street race last night! Be safe!
Jedi54 08-29-2008, 12:15 AM yeah those dumbasses keep picking on modded cars. I think the civic racers with huge fartcan exhausts have more to worry about then us.
LionZoo 08-29-2008, 12:16 AM Slow news day...
lesper4 08-29-2008, 01:41 PM Tuesday on the way up Aarchibald in Rancho Cucamonga / Ontario area i saw a patrol stop with what lookied like a dyno on the street, it was on the opposite of my direction so i am not sure what they were doing.
BRGREEN8 08-29-2008, 02:53 PM they were performing smog check on modified cars, seen it done a few times in Gardena.

Oh shit.
Fuck!
tiltmode43 08-29-2008, 05:10 PM Oh and the Eagle rock crash changed from street racing to speeding, based on what I heard this morning :dunno:

smog check anyone? this was located in diamond bar, CA
danny you better watch your ass, you aint that far from DB.
Jedi54 09-01-2008, 11:32 AM wonder what happens if you don't pass...
NgoRX8 09-01-2008, 11:56 AM wow... that's not good........
rglbegl 09-01-2008, 12:02 PM wonder what happens if you don't pass...
You are sent a little letter stating that your next smog will be a test only center. They do nothing on the spot unless the car is illegal (not registered, stolen etc) But it does put your car in the system for a test only on your next registration. (unless you are within the first 5 years of a new car blah blah blah)
Buddy of mine hit one of those and pulled out his emanage. Car would not run once they put it on the dyno, he called AAA and had it towed 1 block away just out of view. Then drove it away. No letter, no word.
Razz1 09-01-2008, 12:30 PM  time to put the Access Port back into the glove box.
tajabaho1 09-01-2008, 01:48 PM ^ I hit one of those traps, but it was on a freeway ramp
there was a white van with what looks like a radar gun on the road
after that
I got a letter stating my car won't pass smog etc etc and that I have to join this blue pacific group shit and make my car legal again or else she's gonna be permanently put in the system.
whatevers :)
NgoRX8 09-01-2008, 01:53 PM freeway ramp? are you serious....
Razz1 09-01-2008, 01:58 PM Yes, taht is the common method.
KrazieKave 09-01-2008, 02:04 PM Dyno Day anyone?
XDEEDUBBX 09-02-2008, 01:53 AM gives me another reason not to drive my car..haha
Flashwing 09-02-2008, 03:14 AM What absolute nonsense. I agree that the accident is terrible but it's sick how the media and police are really quick to report the accident as "street racing" cause it makes headlines and angers the public.
What the result is, is police going after modified vehicles which normally are legally modified and the drivers are not breaking the law. Even if they are, there needs to be more reasoning other than their vehicle being "modified".
I've looked a lot into research here in Arizona in particular and my biggest argument has been that law enforcment isn't proporational to the crimes. We have a huge DUI problem here along with loads of out of town drivers in Phoenix but instead police worry about the few dozen street racing accidents that happen every year.
I don't support street racing, but I don't agree with the crackdown that myself and other drivers face simply because we "might" street race our car.
The major element police miss is that the people out street racing are the SAME people every single weekend. They would race their mom's mini-van if it came to that. Suspended license, no tags, or even using someone elses car...nothing will stop these people short of throwing them in jail or breaking their knee caps.
It's just sad that in Cali you can't enjoy your vehicle like everyone else does. Having exhaust or an intake gets you nailed for emissions even when you have proof they are carb legal...wheels, tires, or even gauges or tint get you busted.
It's coming to Arizona sooner or later and it's going to be a hard fight to win when it does.
rollerbldes 09-02-2008, 03:40 AM Good thing I'm still 100% legal.
XDEEDUBBX 09-02-2008, 04:07 AM Good thing I'm still 100% legal.
i think your alpine speakers may be illegal..:)
luv4eternity 09-02-2008, 04:08 AM wait , the access port will make ur car not start on the dyno ?
Flashwing 09-02-2008, 04:25 AM wait , the access port will make ur car not start on the dyno ?
No the person being talked about used an emanage:
Buddy of mine hit one of those and pulled out his emanage. Car would not run once they put it on the dyno, he called AAA and had it towed 1 block away just out of view. Then drove it away. No letter, no word.
The accessport does have an anti-theft mode which, if possible to load, would prevent the car from being started.
It might be possible to load that map quickly since the new AP firmware loads maps in about a minute..
Either way, unless you get sniffed the AP will allow you pass every time because it disables all the emissions CEL's which would cause you to fail. The testing station will plug in their computer, see no CEL's and pass you without using the rollers.
At least in AZ, cars made after 1998 don't even use the dyno they just check your OBD for check engine lights.
Jedi54 09-02-2008, 12:18 PM learn to load the Valet map REALLY quickly on your AP. :)
WhitePearl8 09-02-2008, 09:46 PM Around where i live they actually have stops on the side of the road and randomly test cars...sometimes i zoom past (doing the speed limit of course) its annoying
gregs 09-02-2008, 10:55 PM ill just make a run for it "B"
newcastle 09-02-2008, 11:16 PM learn to load the Valet map REALLY quickly on your AP. :)
Highway8 09-02-2008, 11:47 PM In california there are 2 main ways to get nailed and a third more random way.
1) loud annoying fart can exhaust will draw the attention of a cop and he will have you open your hood and if you have modifications you will be sent to the state referee for a smog inspection and you will have to put your car back to stock or legel mods before passing.
2) no catalytic converter will fail one of the road side sniffers and then you get pulled into the test station of get a letter and sent to a test only center.
So keep some sort of cat on your car if they have one of those road side sniffers and no fart can exhaust. If you do these 2 simple things your odds of not getting NAILED goes way up.
There is a third way to get nailed, do anything illegal, get pulled over and the cop asks you to open the hood, you have to say yes by law. If you have illegal mods, and you cant talk your way out of it then your off to the referee.
Oh, the referee thing is bad, not only do you have to fix everything but the ticket carries a fine that you have to pay even after you pass the test, unless you fight the ticket and win.
Now is this fair? Well the enforcement is trying to reduce street racing by using emmisions laws, you break the law and you deserve a ticket. I drive around with an illegal car and I know it. if I get a ticket, I deserved it. Does it redece street racing and save lives? Might make more defference on emission then street racing. As mentioned, street racers will use any car to race and giving them tickets wont likly change there behavior. Street racing kills and I support the cops for trying anything they can.
tiltmode43 09-03-2008, 01:48 AM Either way, unless you get sniffed the AP will allow you pass every time because it disables all the emissions CEL's which would cause you to fail. The testing station will plug in their computer, see no CEL's and pass you without using the rollers.

Funny thing is, I've been running straight pipe and have not had a CEL in ~4,000 miles or so. No bung either, I'm a bit mystified...
Flashwing 09-03-2008, 02:25 AM So with road side sniffers and these kinds of things being done, does anyone know how Cali cops handle out of state drivers?
Seeing as I'll be passing through to go to sevenstock I wouldn't be surprised that I would be stopped seeing as I have managed to get pulled over during every road trip this year. I've been stopped for a loud exhaust and window tint...neither resulted in a ticket and neither have ever been issues for Phoenix or AZ police.
Just curious if anyone knows.
laythor 09-03-2008, 02:50 AM If you're not living in the state you're not held to the emission laws of the state.

you should be off the hook for emissions.
NgoRX8 09-03-2008, 11:31 PM I want an out of state plate. lol
