Hi all...

:lol2: It can't come off! :lol2: What am I doing wrong?

Righty tighty...........lefty loosey.
If it hasn't been off for a while it might be tight.
Putting a small towel over it might help and get some more leverage.

Buckle down girl and get made at it. :)

lightly tap it with a hammer

For my car, it's right to loosen, and left to tighten.

Really?
Standing in front of the car?

Leesha

What? No for real...it is on so tight that I can't get it off!

Okay will it break if I try harder?? My son tried and I'm afraid to break it... ok will try the hammer thingy... If it breaks...I'm not coming back here... I'll do it lightly...

Drive around the block and get one of those cops that like you so much to help out. :)
I can't recommend using vise-grips or anything other than just torquing by hand. You might be able to tap lightly, but I'd be careful.

Leesha
07-15-2008, 09:54 AM
Ok it didn't work!! Damn...

Footman
07-15-2008, 09:58 AM
use science...
drive aroudn the block so the engine bay is heated nicely. Then open the hood. take a can of compressed air ($5 or free depending where you swipe one). hold the can upside down, and empty like half the can or more onto the neck of the oil cap only. The neck should shrink microscopically while the oil cap is still expanded from the heat giving you several hundred extra micron's of wiggle space. Hopefully the cap will then loosen easier.

Footman
07-15-2008, 09:59 AM
WAIT sorry... backward directions....
the oil cap threads INSIDE the neck as opposed to on the outside like a jar....

Spray the compressed air upside down on the OIL CAP DIRECTLY, and NOT the neck!

Leesha
07-15-2008, 10:05 AM
Ok I'm not doing all that...

I still need to do the recall so I just called the dealer and I'll book the oil change at the same time... I also mentioned to them how tight it is... & am trying to get a replacement car while mine is being fixed...

Footman
07-15-2008, 10:09 AM

Leesha
07-15-2008, 10:19 AM
LOL...first of all...I don't know what I'm doing or how to do that so before I hurt my baby... I'll let the dealers take care of it...

Will it come off easier if the car is hot??

Footman
07-15-2008, 10:37 AM
You are taking a can of compressed air, holding it upside down to freeze the oil cap. Since the cap is threaded on the inside.

From science, heat expands, while cold shrinks. The idea is to shrink your oil cap by several hundred microns, while the neck of the oil filler is still hot (expanded).

If the outside is expanded while the inside is shrunk, you may have a chance at removing the oil cap easier.

Footman
07-15-2008, 10:38 AM
You can't hurt a cap with the kind of freezing done by an upside down can of compressed air.

Have you ever tried it? I'll take the easy way out thanks... Or why not just put ice on the cap...???

Footman
07-15-2008, 10:55 AM
The time it takes for ice to cool your cap down is not fast enough before the neck of the oil filler will also start cooling down.

What you are seeking is a large temperature delta between the cap and the neck portion. The closer in temperature the two items are, the more "fitting" the cap will be. You don't want that.

You just have to turn the cap like a bitch counter-clockwise (to loosen hopefully). I know how tight those damn dealers put them on sometimes. Just use a bit more muscle.

Trust me...my son tried and we are afraid of breaking it!

Footman, you're such a nerd.

I would have loved to be the first one to reply to this so I could answer the topic question with "Get a man to do it".

There's no special voodoo required to open the cap. Just twist it left (counter-clockwise) as mentioned, HARD! It's a machine, not a baby. What is the dealer mechanic going to do when you bring it over? He'll turn it really hard. lol

If it breaks, I owe you a coke.

You need the aluminum MazdaSpeed oil cap. It never sticks.

In fact it is hard to keep it tight. And when it is hot, think about touching it first!

remove the dip stick to de-pressurize the oil chamber. It should work.

yea some days it takes a bit more muscle to remove it. Just force it...it'll unscrew (counter clockwise).

Did ya manage to get it off yet?

FWIW, there really shouldn't be that much (if any) vacuum pressure in there. Whoever screwed it on last probably just did it a bit too hard, or it seized for some reason.

I'm pretty sure if you just ask some guy in a parking lot he'll get it off for you ;)

Hi Leesha

The problem you are having is that most likely the dealer overtightened the cap. The best way to take it off is to use either a pair of really big vice grips or the really large gator pliers and make sure you spin it counter-clockwise, if you are afraid of damaging the cap just put a cloth over it before you grip it with the pliers or vice grip and EUREKA!!!!!!!!

the stock cap just sticks.....if you are just turning it and not pulling up or anything else it should come off....just take a bit of muscle......they can be really really stuck though. DO NOT HAMMER IT!!!.

A rubber hammer of course! But it shouldn't be necessary. A strap tool would be better.

lightly tap it with a hammer

Well then I would also recommend 'Footmans' suggestion to spray a can of compressed air on it for 15 seconds or so then try it. If you have a Channel-lock wrench then try that at the same time.
I presume that Oakville Mazda were the last hands on it? If so, bring it to their attention.

Can't believe you are still having this problem . Here is a solution that will definately work - it's a little bit rough but if you are careful you wont damage the cap .
Buy a pair of adjustable pliers (big ones - 12" min) see pic
get a thick rag and put it over the cap (this will prevent damage to the cap)

The rest is easy ....

True, but a guy should know better. If he doesn't, he's goes the other way.

All you need is a rubber band, the foil from a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip, a strike-anywhere match, fishing line, and a blowtorch.

LMAO!!! Going to try with some male muscle now!! BRB...

With about 5 super hard turns(& cursing the dealers for tightening it so tight)...it worked! My oil is now topped up & my baby is all NXT'd up & ready to cruise tomorrow!!
