Not sure if any of you have had this happen...

Im sitting at the Tim Horton's drive in waiting for my coffee, when all of a suden, my left door lock locks and unlocks, right door lock does the same, and my trunk pops.

All in sequence:

Driver side lock/unlock
Passenger side lock/unlock
Trunk pop

I didint touch anything at all.
Car was running, and kept running.
Radio was playing and didint hesitate or stop.
Lights didint dim or anything.

Really weird.
First time this has happened.

My 8 is a Canadian 2005 GT with about 51000km (31700miles).

Any thoughts ?

Poltergeist!!!

Sorry that wasn't very helpful. I have no idea what it could be.

RF interference from something interacting with the remote locking/alarm/trunk release perhaps?

Do you know anybody that has access to your spare key that would enjoy screwing with you? :)

That's what I was thinking.
We all know when you unlock with the remote, the driver's side unlocks first, then the passenger's side once you hit the button again!

But the remote doesnt work when the key is in the ignition. At least Im pretty sure about the trunk.

Only person with a spare is my GF and she is without a car as her FIT was stolen recently and works clear accross town.

I hadnt thought of that, but its a good suggestion.

Maybe RF interference... but I wonder from what.

This is a spot I pass through everyday for the past 4 years.
Past 6 months with the RX8.

It would have to be something new in the area... or something mobile... but what?

like I said... weird.

The poltergeist comment is dead on. :)

when I heard the unlocking then the THUNK of the trunk... I was like WTF??!!?!

Pulled over after I was handed my coffee and yep, trunk open.

Funny thing is, I was eyeballing a hot chick in the car behind me in my rear view mirror. I was hoping she didint notice the trunk, haha.

Luckily our trunks barely open when unlatched.

If it occurs again, I would take it to the dealer and have them look at the receiver or the keyless control module!

Do you have the advanced key system? Was it in your pocket?

Mine seems to work when the engine is running. Maybe something pressed the buttons. I'll refrain from making a comment about what it was, but it probably had to do with the hot chick visual.

I don't know the details on the RX-8 but, many cars have what the industry terms "body computers" which are essentially little microcontrollers (similar to what controls the inputs/outputs of a microwave oven for example) that monitor various electrical devices (i.e. switch positions) on your car. For example, if a door is open and you're driving, a dash light indicator glows. A computer is driving the dash light by monitoring a switch position effected by the door opening and closing.

Historically, this was done differently, but now, in some cars, it is under computer control.

A computer wigging out for some reason, to which there are many, would cause odd behavior you're describing. One bad bit could vector the processor to the wrong address and start execution on data where microcode was expected.

So this is when the girl responds to the lock popping with "are you getting out or just glad to see me?"

Gives new meaning to the term "body computers" eh?

I dont think 2005's had the keyless system.

I just have a switchblade key.

But... the front door closes ON the rear doors...

I'll see if they have any play, but I dont think so. Thanks for the comments, especially the funny ones :)
