Anyone know how to remove the rearview mirror? I see a small notch on the left which I'm assuming I'm supposed to do something with.

Some pictures would help immensely.

There is a single Torx bit screw, (T15, as I recall) holding the rear view mirror to the windshield. Remove that screw, disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the mirror (one side pushes in, then it will release and pull out) and slide the mirror up (toward the headliner) and off the windshield. All there is to it.

This was for the non-homelink mirror, which does not have a torx screw. I pushed a small screwdriver where the tab was and got tapped the mirror at the base with a rubber mallet and off it came.. Got the mazda6 homelink mirror on there now, but it seems a bit loose. Will try a couple thing to get it tightened up. (the screw it came with seems to short)..

Next step will be to get power to it, which I will probably let the dealer handle..

Mirror is pretty nice so far, it even has a compass which is always handy..

You may find that there's already power available inside the overhead trim panel that houses the map lights. Check this thread (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8242) for instructions on removing the panel.

If it's a Sport package the only cables up there are the power for the map lights. I beleive they should be 12 volt, but I never checked :D I ran my radar power up the pillar instead.

REALLY? It has the compass "window" on the far right side? If so, this means that either you got a mirror from a Mazda 6 (where the Homelink mirror has a compass) -or- Mazda has released one for the 8.

I'll be really interested when you hook it up if the compass works. We have this feature in my wife's new Mazda 6S, which I really like, and I was disappointed that it was not on the Homelink mirror in the 8. So I got to looking at it one day, and concluded that while the mirrors are dimensionally the same, the one in the 6S had an extra-large mounting base on the windshield. As it had wires going into it, I further concluded that it must house the guts of the compass electronics mechanism.

So, if your mirror has a functioning compass, and it just slides onto the mount on the 8's windwhield, let us know, along with what specifically the part is number of the mirror you got.

It was from the 6.. But the clamp is slightly bigger and it will not fit properly.. So it's a nogo.. :\

Wow, drag. But I bet if you got a windshield mount for a Mazda 6, it'd work...

Yeah, the thing that annoys me is that the 6 mirror with compass was $220 and included the wiring.. The RX8 mirror which doesn't have the compass and doesn't include the wiring is $320..

Hopefully the prices will be inline when the official kit comes out..

nt5k, have you been able to get it to work? I am also very interested in this mirror. CAn you order the window mount for the mirror?

I guess you can change the mount that goes to the glass.. But I have no intention of messing with that.. I guess the only real choice is to wait for mazda..

nt5k, i may take this task on, does the Mazda6 wire connectors work with the rx8, our do you have to hack the wires? Didn't know if you had it up and working...

I have an RX8 from Greece and they have the ordinary rearview mirror!
Where can i Find the electronic rearview mirror that is installed in the USA RX8 with the compass, dimer, etc...???

nt5k, did you ever figure out if it would plug right in were the RX8 Autodimmer mirrow plug is located, our was it a complete different setup?

I'm guessing you mean the connector for power..
There are no cables in the roof that you can pulldown. (possibly the dome lights) Mazda only put the connectors up there for people with the SunRoof.. So you will need to get th wire up there yourself by pulling a power cable from the fusebox up the A-Pillar and through the liner. The kits that I tried from the 6 came with the cabling so that part wasn't a big deal.. The issue was that the mounting point on the windshield was a slightly different size.

Mazda really dropped the ball with these stupid packages..
