has anybody ever successfully installed an indash 8" touch screen display in an 8?

A stand alone 8" could indeed be made to fit in this dashboard. It will be 100% custom work. The largest that a conventional cd player would allow is a 7", be it a flip type or double din. The issue that comes to mind first and foremost is the depth of the unit that you would like installed. If it is too deep it is not going to fit into the cavity where the stock double din unit (behind the main controls) sits. It may have to be brought out of the dash a bit in order to allow the clearance for this.
