Alright i'm about to bite the bullet, step 1 get a macbook pro to replace the fiance's dell insperion 9300 = complete! so that frees up a pc to use in the car

what i'm looking at after many days at mp3car.com

screen- havn't decided what i want yet though some 7"
pc - dell insperion 9300
power - probably will be a carnetix 2150 (or whatever number it is)
pie adapter - no real idea where to get it at
car2pc-maz - again no idea where to get it at
4 port hub
gps antenna
slide back nav hood (1200 bux is a bit ritch for my blood)

the big question i have for you other laptop users in regards to getting it in your 8 was how did you power it? did you run another cable to the carnetix or did you just use one of the belkin air/car adapter things? If you used the carnetix where did you tap into the acc line at and where did you hide it? then the big question is how did you control the startup / shutdown? mp3car says to mod the laptop's on/off switch or lid switch but i figured / hoped that somebody here would have a better solution.

everything else seems easy enough just a bunch of de_stroying my car to get it in there.

am i missing anything else? again thanks for the help

You shouldn't need a P.I.E adapter if you're going to get a Car2PC adapter. It should already have a line in to the stock stereo. Get it here: http://indashpc.org. BTW, your fiance' mac mini would be perfect as a carPC.

very nice pix rasp bookmarked it, and you say that the pie isn't needed however i still see a lot of people that use it in addition to the car2pc adapter. Why do they use both? i'm not opposed to only using the car2pc i just want to make sure before i put everything back together that i didn't forget something that i might want

I raised the same question, and you may want to confirm with indashpc.org. The way I understand it is older version did not have a line out for input to the stock head unit. Supposedly the newer ones do.

is there a difference in the car2pc adapters and the grom adapters?

Im actually going to do the same thing soon prolly. I was looking for just a 7" Nav system to put in the sliding hood...but nobody seems to make them. I thought about some of the 5" options but the one I liked can't mount to the hood. Instead I think Im just going to use my little POS Vaio with a USB GPS unit and 7" Xenarc screen.

$400 - Sliding Nav Hood
$300 - Xenarc Touchscreen
$200 - StreetDeck FrontEnd Software
$120 - DC - DC Laptop power cord
$70 - USB GPS Receiver
$60 - Car2PC adapter

That's $1100 without buying a PC, installing, or figuring out how to turn the laptop on or off.

when i get ready to do all this i will take pix of all the places i tap into and all that good stuff. Lets just hope i don't get crucified because of the locations i choose to do things :). I am hoping to get a nav hood and screen from another guy on the forums here so if that happens i will end up gettn this stuff soon... if not then it will be a bit longer

SD is a waste of money if you're technical, and have patience and time. Otherwise, I find it very a user friendly front-end.

Personally I think I would prefer to just find some way of integrating it with google maps. I don't think there are any really good solutions out there though. :(

Sure hope you don't work in IT there. The page is having a lot of XML problems with the tabs. Malformed XML at that. Also a price would be nice on the page. Google says $1200 for those that are interested.

Edit: Also will it fit in the sliding hood?

Good Man :)

RoadRunner is a good choice for a fronted, may I suggest the DigitalFX 3.0 or Lsx Void 3.0 as skins (I'm partial to LSX Void 3.0). SShhhhh dont tell anybody I'm partial to Lsx Void I live kinda close to John the creator of the DigitalFX skin and see him at the mp3car meets and he may sucker punch me :(.

FreeICE 1.7 is another VERY nice frontend its also FREE very small and stable not as many features as RR but simple to configure (it looks great too, it just needs and EQ).

As an owner of StreetDeck I'd have to say stay away it does have some cool features i.e Virtual Earth Sat image overlays for Nav, tons of gestures BUT definitly not worth the $200.00 (it's also glitchy as hell).

Happy Carputing keep us posted :)

P.S

Sorry to inform you but you are a nerd for putting a PC in you car.

Good luck with your build, especially getting the motorized nav hood buttons to function.
