I am in the process of swapping engines out and during this i removed the lower intake on my original with 52K on it. Daymn--its a wonder the ports were opening at all. talk about dirty--carbon and such was everywhere. It will take me a fw hrs to get it clean the way i want it. Anyone else done this?

I pulled mine at 60K miles...and it was barely dirty at all....it all wiped off.....

No hard carbon at all.

I pulled a friends 4port UIM and unblocked his SSV..and it was crapped up good....

I tracked the hell out of mine...with pre-mix (and Lucas UCL occasionally) and did a "seafoam" type treatment at about 50K miles.....

Maybe thats why it was so clean??

It might've been oil blowback and got caked onto the intake. :)

Those pics look exactly like what i saw on mine.Blow by gases, i guess is what is causing it. i agree with others on that. Maybe my new water meth system will help and for certain a catch can will be added now.
I bet a lot of cars are running around with this.
maybe we need to start "steam cleaning" this engines some?

in response to why I am replacing engines---getting low on compression and the wife wasnt looking!
also needed a core to build the way i want it.

I don't see how since the large majority of the intake manifold only sees incoming air. Only the very last portion may see hatever comes out the injectors and most of that goes into the chamber without touching the intake.

:dunno:

I would thinks it's more a seal/compression issue with crap blowing back into the intake, which is why he has it out ...

agreed team--thats the only thing it could be.

Problem with that is my engine had very poor compression..and vac.

That's why I pulled it in the first place....I really don't know. I also had a recurring problem with oil i the intake that I put down to blow-by as well

So why do some engines get crapped up and others not??

I really think its driving habits....

olddragger

thats the reason i am doing an engine swap also--my old one was only pulling about 15.8 of vacuum(before s.c install).
A friend of mine is also replacing an engine at 58K--low compression. Its not like we dont take care of them. On the other hand another friend has over 5k track miles on his (and over 60K on the motor) and it is still purring like a kitten. go figue. Maybe the harder you run them the better they are?
