First: Yes, I searched.

Now, every morning, I start my car to let the engine warm up and the ice melt off the windows/windshield before the drive to work. I start the car, turn the heater on, put it to defrost, and hit the defrost switch for the rear window. When I leave for work (usually 5-10 minutes after I start the car) and whe whole drive there, I can smell burning oil while the heater is on defrost. If I switch the heater to dash or dash and feet, turn on the AC (switch from hot to cold), close and open the outside recirc. vents, etc, the smell goes away. I only smell the burning oil when the car is set to defrost.

Car is a 2004 Grand Touring 8.

Anybody else have this problem or know what to do about it?

setting it to defrost should have no effect on burning oil. Maybe something stuck in a vent that's causing the smell?

seems like there is oil on the drivers side engine from where the oil was changed with the filter and once you warm it up the vapors flow into the cabin.if you do not have any oil in your driveway there is a chance the filter might not be tight enough and the burnt oil smell is traveling thru the air vent.

Whoever did your oil change, when they take the oil filter out, there will ALWAYS some oil drip on the engine, if you dont clean it up after you're done with the change. you will get this smell 100% for sure.

What I did was everytime after the oil change(and filter), I will spray some of those electric safe spray and let it dry. no smell, nothing. engine clean, no mess.

Here's the thing though: I haven't had an oil change in a while. Still within the maintainance schedule, but I'm coming up on my next one (probably next week with my 30k service). this just started like a week ago, so I doubt it's coming from the filter or I would have smelled it before now. Could it be a leak somewhere? I'm gonna put it up on ramps tonight and see if something's dripping maybe.

We hope you are not going by the Miles between oil changes only! There is also a Time too, 3-6 months at the most.

it might be coming from the intake tube.i have seen this before and it was oil in the intake tube due to the air filter i used had sucked to much air and the excess oil was everywhere and causing the burning oil effect.if all else fails put a dye in the oil and use a ultre violet light to help locate the leak.
