Depends on the size of the intercooler.

My guess is unless its the same size as the radiator its not going to be very effective.

There's a lot of little odds and ends to accomplish this, possible rewiring, etc...and either doing without A/C or refabbing some of the metal lines leading to and from the condensor. All is possible, but it's got to be a lot of work. Pretty sure one of our forum members has done this already.

The benefit is allowing fresh air to reach both the radiator and ic, instead of having the radiator take already heated air from the intercooler on the FMIC setups. How effective any setup would be would depend on how well it is fabricated with ducting, etc...and of course you choice of intercooler...

I've asked about this here and there, many will tell you it's not needed. Many will also tell you they have heating issues and want to get things under control. The guys I know that race turbo rotarys will only use V-mounts.

I like v-mounts setups. The downside is that there is always alot of custom work to do to get one done properly. You don't need an intercooler as large as the radiator. That's not the point. The point of it is to not have air flowing through one cooler before another one. If you can get it done properly and are willing to spend the time and money on it, I say go for it and post pics when you do!

V mounts are a nice setup but a pain to do, especially with mounting of the radiator.

What would be the downside to this layout for an RX-8 V-mount - having the intercooler lay flat on its back, between the bottom of the rad and the front air inlet, with high pressure air going down and out thru holes in the black plastic pan?

This way the rad would never 'see' the intercooler heat, though the available air might be reduced. It would also be fairly stealthy - I like!

I will draw it up when I get near a scanner, but it seems pretty logical, given all the wasted space in there.

Unless you have a really deep splitter, under the car at the front is generally a high pressure area. So you'd have less pressure drop moving air through the intercooler.

The spot right at the front of the hood is generally a low pressure area, so it's a great place to have intercooler air exit. Check out the GT3 and its radiator exits.

Makes me want to drop an FD motor in an RX-8 :)

I was looking at one of the RX-8's that are in our shop and there really isnt enough room to do a V mount unless the turbo is mounted very low like the Greddy. Even then it would be a very tight fit.

I agree, they could've used silicon piping instead of the dryer duct

I was thinking along the lines of the pictures above. lowering the radiator and tipping the top of the radiator down to open up a gap above the radiator to duct air into the engine bay.

the knightsports rx-8 is running a v-mount setup. you can see it in some of the photos of it. although they haven't produced a kit yet.

For all the trouble, why not an air-to-water intercooler? They're incredibly effective and take up less room, unless you plumb the water to another heat exchanger. But you'd be surprised to know that unless you spend extended periods of time on boost, that's really not necessary.

Yes i have though about the air to water intercool as well. Im trying going for best effecient way to keep cool and also for the look as well when doing this.
