Seriously I was laughing the other day with this car, because I've had it for a certain amount of time, and theres so much that I want to do with the car, I have like a list full of stuff i want to add to the car, but don't have that much money to do it all at once haha. I could probably create a song out of it all, but the thing is, even without a bunch of stuff added on, I really love this car, I don't think theres another car I would take under 50k over this one

I dont know thats my rant for the day, lol I don't know how you guys can keep up if you have gf's/wives. I mean just the other day I spent $250 on little stuff (Clear Corners, Custom LED footwells, and puddle lights), and you know i have my eyes set on new rims and tires, a new exhaust, a body kit, coilovers, sway bars, a nav system, and the final piece, The turbo ......................

I'm gonna need to start selling drugs or something to afford what i want =[

Just do it over time. I've had mine for 2 years, done TONS of things to it and there's still a bunch of items on my "to do" list.

Well, for me, you just have to pay attention to the tiny little spending that you usually never pay attention to

Like say, cut down your *eat/dine out* times. When you hang out, buy less junk like drinks, candies, snacks, etc.

a buck or 2 each time does not seem like a lot, but when you add it all up, you'll probably save over 1000s of dollars a year.

Plus of course find a more decent paying job, stop working at McDonaldos :)

It's a pretty common theme amongst "car" folks. In order, I've had an '86 Chevy IROC Z28 with 305 and auto. Next up, was a '94 Mustang Cobra that I I spent a TON of money on. Now, I have an RX 8 and this is by far the best of the three.

Get a part time job, working nights or weekends. Or, if possible put in as much OT as you can at your current job. DO NOT start using credit cards to fulfill your mod appetite, you will be deep in debt before you know it.
Do something lucrative in cash earnings such as waiting tables, bartending, night club work, even delivering pizzas! Laugh if u want but those fellas can bring home some good tip money on a Sat. and/or Sun. shift (considering ur not using ur 8 for the deliveries!) To me, NO 2nd job is too "low" or embarassing when it comes to extra cash for modding ur ride. Your buddies may laugh, but ur the one rollin around in a bitchin ride when all is said and done.

Well, MikeyDs aint a bad choice if you just want to get maybe 150 bux a week part time.

its not a bad choice for people who needs money fast you know.

i came up with a budget. i set myself 100 bucks a week for stuff like food, gas, and other stuff. i have my bills spread out over the course of the month, and then the rest of the money goes into "savings" which is another word for mods :lol2:

jones75254
01-07-2008, 12:14 PM
^^^yeah ANYWHERE making extra money is worth it IMO. If you can get a job at Mcdonalds then you should be able to get a job as a waiter or bar back somewhere where you get some cash tips as well as the other "perks" of those job types.
I worked security for night clubs since college, cant tell you how many times i walked out with extra cash for providing "special treatment" among other things, LOL...

all jokes aside, if you really want good money for your rx-8 mods, then slangin some drugs on the side is the easiest/quickest way to raise some money.

Your post reminds me of how I felt 20 months ago when I bought mine.

With some, um, less than stellar credit issues to clear up I've still managed to sink about [undisclosed_in_case_the_missus_sees] into the 8. All while doing a good job of getting the "important" stuff cleared up.

Budget your $$$ money well, cut out the stupid little stuff like NY said. It's amazing how much you save making your own damn ice coffee!! And just accept that maybe that turbo is farther down the road (if at all :()

And all of it gets done over time. Like you, I spend a quick couple hundred w/tint, corners, strakes, and accents. The other stuff took more time. Enjoy!

alright son, i think your missing the point that i'm trying to get across here...

imagine this:
you can KEEP ON shelling out cash to buy your favorite drink at your local Starbucks, you can KEEP ON buying needless stuff for your own pleasure, etc etc.

selling some light drugs is THE ONLY way that you can do all this while pursuing mods for the rx-8!!! unless your part of a high income family :squint:

BUSH'S taxes will thwart any whatsoever legal course of action (an honest job, the LOTTERY!) you may take to raise money for modding your car.

what options does a good, moral man have when there are no more good choices with benefits? :squint:

Is one thing to make jokes or imply things, but lets not get too caught up in your little fantasy world, ok big papi? I highly doubt a legit dealer would be here on this website trying to recruit some kid for "work". Now, a small timer who sells enough to support his own habit may do something like that, hmm.......

My 8 is stock and will likely stay that way apart from maybe a tint job come summer. I've had a JDM STi conversion 2.5rs. I want to keep the 8 in full stock trim as much as possible and enjoy what Mazda has done. Now modding goes to my wife's wagon. ;)

I spent a lot on my SPYN wheels when I first got the car because I wanted black rims and was pretty inexperienced about selecting rims. I don't *mind* the spyn's but now I realize they're not what I really wanted and are too heavy (25.5 lbs!). So, gotta be careful spending cash on this car and make better choices. I think axis reverbs would be a pretty decent choice. But I agree with OP, it's damn expensive to keep this up and I don't see it ending in the near future.

I hate it when people want something they can't afford they automatically think that they need to sell drugs or something. It's so stereotypical. You ever think about going to school, get a degree and work for some big coporate company that pays you over 60,000 or 70,000 per year, so that you can buy whatever you want without having to sell drugs? lol. Gosh man....you need to change the way you think and start thinking BIG!

The best plan I have had so far is to
- Spec out a car and configuration you want
- Buy car - and all mods all at once (say your budget is 70K...)
- Then fix all the little things you break as time goes on.

IMO - the 8 is wayyyyy more fun to mod since I am working off a budget of money already gone out of my accounts (so to speak); no buyers remorse or saving up.

My other cars were more long term which was OK; but to be honest I didn't really get to feel the impact of my "dream" car all at once. I knew I loved the 8 my wife found for me; but the HP was going to be a prob; so I just fixed it right off the bat before I even drove it.

I have never even DRIVEN a NA rotary in my life; but I don't think I really need to.

I find this "mod bug" has gotten a hold of me and probably some others here and it's hard to stop. I've been depressed a few times looking at the awesome rims and other parts that some of you guys have and I wish I had. But that's such a negative spiral. It's not a competition and we just gotta do what makes us happy without comparing to others. And lotsa people here have kept their 8's completely stock and are loving it.

It's really not that hard. If you go on Yahoo Groups, they have groups or clubs that show you how. Apparently, even if you are below average size, you can push your head and neck against a wall on one side and push your butt/back against something like a staircase. Just keep fricking pushing like mad hell from both sides and your mouth should be able to reach.

word of advice.. you're young don't waste any time or money with this stuff until after you've achieved a successful career.

I did. I went to jr college, then transferred, earned my four-year degree (BFA), paid no attention to costly hobbies, just focused on getting out of school and starting my career. Now I'm 37, I have 11 years of experience in the software biz and earn a cozy six figure salary. Save and invest your savings, make more money and re-invest. That 30k car over 5 years would cost you so much more than you realize. I have enough assets to retire comfortably right now. I plan to retire in 2 years when my options vest...

The amazing thing is that I don't think I am an extraordinary person in any way.. I am not particularly smart (c average in high school, b average in college), nor do come from a rich upbringing (I still live in middle class suburbs here in southern california since I was 5 years old). All I did was start a career in IT, and invested most what I made, rather than blow it on toys, cars and chicks... (Not that I'm a loner, I am getting married this year). Just find things to do that are fun and cheap or free. And try to save wherever you can. America is a free market, so use your freedom to find cheaper alternatives to things you need. Most of all, moderation is key. I could have bought a Ford GT with one of my stock sales, but instead I reinvested it and that same money could now buy me three of them.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I tend to because I smile when I think how simple it is, yet so many people squander their opportunities to enjoy 'now' rather than later. If Steve Jobs decided to get himself that hotrod over buying supplies for his computer biz, he probably wouldn't be where he is today.

I think Squid is doing it the right way. He's not going to get married or start a family until he's ready financially and emotionally.

Also, the western world is changing. We're not farming-minded anymore but rather career-minded. Too many people still get married way too early and end up divorced and having kids for the wrong reason. It's ok to have kids even at 50, as long as your wife is 26.

You both got some valid points ...

I start working when I was like 12, so I know how does it feel to have *fun*.

Now, Im 27 (28 in a few months), I fuck around for a long while, work, fuck around, work ... now I went back to school trying to finish up my degree. not that I really need it. but Im just trying to do something that *I should've done years ago*.

I consider myself kinda old already. Time flows like a river. By the time you realized that you're getting old it probably too late.

So, just have fun while you can ! As long as it will not affect your future ~~~

well i have one credit card, i use it for gas and food only (i set my restrictions on that card) and that adds up to 2-300 a month. so i just pay that off every month, and as i do that, it builds my credit up in a good way.

Being smart with your money is never bad advice. But don't wait to live your life... That logic makes you into one of those 60yo guys at the Porsche dealer :eyetwitch

You don't have to spend money just to have fun (I have plenty of hobbies that don't cost a dime), but you also don't have to give up on a hobby just because it is perceived to cost lots of money. If I love driving and working on my car, I'm not gonna tell myself "this $10k I plan to spend on a turbo now is going to be worth 100k in 30 years when I retire ". Set some targets, make a budget, don't screw yourself by racking up debt you can't pay off, and have fun. You don't really need food anyway :lol2:

And for the kids still in college: if you can con your parents into giving you money for mods, by all means feel free

It's true that in the States most people live too much off debt (I have a friend that graduated from college and went on to grad school with $10k worth of credit card debt... Grad school, as in no real income), but I believe that you might be too far on the other end of the spectrum. At the end of the day, money is only just that. You can always make more money. You can never get back the years that you spent saving up and waiting for your life to start :)

CnnmnSchnpps
01-10-2008, 10:45 AM
The best thing to do is to have a handful of credit cards that you routinely use and pay off.

You can fit a whole lot of cards in one hand

On another note, sometimes not paying off a balance in full can be a good thing too. If you spend years paying off your card then suddenly make only the minimum payment, I'd bet you the first thing the cc company does is increase your limit. :icon_no2:

Hey Chet, you got it together man! Even if you don't, who cares, you will. I totally agree that you gotta have fun when you're young. By the time reality sets in, you will have to finish school and work until you're old. I have a real hard time in my teaching job (high school science) because it's my job to get the students to work hard, be responsible, and all those things we rebel against as teenagers and yet I know THIS is the time for fun because very soon they will be on the treadmill and it's all downhill (meaning bills, job, long hours, pressure). I feel like a hypocrite trying to teach them how important it is to do their schoolwork all the while knowing the "good ole' days"will soon be behind them. Still, I do it.

My situation (without getting too personal) is that I was a complete fuckup at school. Kicked out at age 16 when I was in grade 10 (ie. behind my peers). I hated school and this was back in the 70's so it was all a big PaRtY. I went back to high school when I was 23, on to university in science, and started teaching at 30. I just turned 46 so have been teaching for 16 years. I've got a great salary (all things considered) and have learnt many lessons. But I only started saving for retirement 4 years ago. But man, did I have a blast when I was young.

I'm not physically fit as I was, losing lots of hair, etc. If I had to do it all again, I'd do exactly what I did. Not everyone finishes school right off. It took me a number of years before I realized how important education was ... and THEN I went back and did my duty. I tell kids this all the time. They don't all pass, they don't all care. No big deal, it takes time for some of us. If you (Chet) go back to school anytime soon, I say, right on! Definitely do it. But for god's sake, life is too short and too friggin' stressful to freak out about getting such a great education when you're a teenager. What does it get you? You wanna be a doctor with all that stress? Is money really what will make you happy? My brother's wife is a radiologist making $700,000 a year (way too much imo, not at all fair to the rest of us) but she is so stressed out and misearable. I am thankful I didn't get accepted to med school because it would have destroyed me.

Finally, I hate to admit this, but I went bankrupt a number of years ago. Really poor financial skills, credit cards. The big "B" taught me how to live off my earnings and only pay cash. It took many years to get back into the loop but now I have lots of credit and am pretty careful. Mind you, I feel myself slipping into the black hole of mods to some extent.

Good luck man and hang in there!

Thanks alot Zerobio. everyone says i should go back to school, because its free (harley-davidson pays for tuition). but i dont know what i want to do. i know its something auto related, whether its engineering, or design, or w/e. but i make really good money for only being 18 (18 an hour) and for the most part, i enjoy what i do. i just hate the repetiveness of working everyday. but im not going to let anyone pressure me to go to school, because i have time. as soon as i figure out what i want to do, i will do it whatever it is.

but what i really dream of is to become a professional driver for autocross or F1 or something like that. i have talked with the VP of the SCCA about how to get my professional drivers license, but it will take quite a bit of $$. so maybe in summer i will go ahead and do it. but otherwise, i live my life one day at a time.

Chet, that's great stuff. If your company pays for tuition you should definitely take advantage of it, just don't let people pressure you into studying, that's a recipe for disaster. I went to college because my parents said so, and I now realize I missed alot of opportunities while there just because I didn't have the correct mindset about it.

Also, keep in mind that 18 an hour is great when you're 18, but 3-4 years down the road it will no longer be so great :)

Pro racer huh.. That's quite a lofty goal. Best of luck to ya

Chet, I can hook you up with someone who may be able to guide you along a bit on that pro-driver ambition. The most important thing in being successful is to have a definite vision as to what it is you wanna do. The next thing is to place yourself in the position to be mentored by those who have not failed, but succeeded, in that which you would like to do. After that, start to hang around those people, not as a fan, with the intention of learning everything you can.

The reason people are telling you to go to school is because to have an employer foot the bill is a rarity that you shouldn't pass up. School isn't just about the rechnical info you'll glean from the curriculum. It's moreso about the networking opportunities you'll have,

We'll talk next weekend. Better bring your notepad and pens.

screw that, im bringing my laptop. my handwriting sucks really bad. and i can type faster than i write. i look forward to next weekend very much

You know, chet, I do agree with you in some ways as well. I was reading over my post and I did get the sense that I was sounding just like my old man haha.

But don't get me wrong, I didn't want to make it sound like I had absolutely no fun as a young adult. I had a blast in fact.. Otherwise I would have probably made it to a four year university after high school. But no I think I was a pretty screwed up kid in high school also. I ditched alot of classes and got alot of D's. Even when I transferred to a JC (didn't even bother to apply to a university with my grades), I didn't take it too seriously. I really didnt' know what I wanted to do. But I knew I loved two things, computers and fine arts. So I took a chance and applied to CSUF in their art program. I didn't think I would get in, but I did. The art program there was great. I had chosen to become an artist without even considering what the career was like. (No one becomes an artist for the money!).
There at the university I made all these really cool friends, learned to smoke out, enjoyed girls, etc. And there I also did a lot of ditching. Art school was a breeze. When I got out of school after four years (should have taken 2, but I was enjoying myself too much), I had a $15k loan to pay off and only entry level opportunities for art grads that paid $13/hr. I admit, I was shocked at how little graphic designers were paid. I did absolutely no research on my career. I just thought the idea of being an artist was great.

I did know a little about computers (okay, alot, I'm a geek). My brother worked at a software company, and he said with my talent it wouldn't be hard for me to get my foot in the door... The fact that I was his brother also helped, I'm sure. Nevertheless, I was in, starting out at $25/hr as a senior software analyst.

Anyway I digress. Do what you want, but just remember--- the harder you work now, the less you work later. I saw how my dad worked his ass as a aerospace technician, up until he retired, and he did very little to save. Much of his money went to caring for our family, of which was a total of 7 people. As much as I admire my father, I didn't want to live his life. I wanted to live easily, and make sure that when I did have a kid, I would already be well off to take care of him or her. I grew up not having alot (other than family hardships). I wouldn't want that for my kid.. Thus only now am I getting married.

Think about it.. I'm retiring in two years.. that is, I'm 39, and I don't have to work PERIOD for the rest of my life. The interest on my investments earns me enough to live comfortably.

I think that's a hell of a better trade off to blowing all my checks to impress my friends (or myself for that matter)...
