View Full Version : New plugs, coils, wires? Not warrantied at 57k? Can I replace myself?
TheColonel 11-07-2007, 06:47 PM So I brought my car into Wayne Mazda because I'm getting power loss, rough idle, and difficulty starting, and they want to charge me $860 to replace the plugs, coils and wires. Oh, and I forgot the $96 diagnostic fee, even if I don't want them to do it.
They tell me this isn't covered under warranty, which goes against what I was told when I dropped the car off. I'd also like to know what happened to the "Free Full Circle Inspection" where they look at the car for free. Last time I checked free did not equal $96.
So since I don't feel like dropping a $Grand for Wayne's "throw parts at the car" method that I've expierienced before, I'm considering buying the parts and doing it myself.
Anyone changed these parts on the car themselves before? Can I do it w/o putting the car on a lift?
tajabaho1 11-07-2007, 06:49 PM plugs = 25$
coils = 100$
wire = 80$
staticlag 11-07-2007, 06:53 PM Yes, replacing all three are pretty easy, all you need to do it take off the drivers side wheel to access the spark plugs.
The rest of the stuff can be reached from under the hood.
generally stuff like spark plugs, wires, brake pads, or rotors are not warrantied.
O'Renesis 11-07-2007, 06:55 PM This is a DIY. No need for lift, only basic mechanics tools.

Where have you found plugs for $25 bucks a set?
More like $45 bucks PER plug- the set is around $150.

Stock plug cost 20 dollars each, so times 4 (assume you replace all) would be around 80 bux, some site offers free shipping like Amazon. I got mine there, got it in 2 days. not bad for 80 bux.
Coil is about 25, again assuming that u replace all 4, that will be 100
Stock plug wire is about 50 something bux. I think. but you can get *better* plug wires for maybe a bit more, like 60 something for Mangecore(spelling). Or maybe RB plug wires, Im happy with it. but I will try Mangcore(spelling) next time.
To OP : replace it all yourself. like someone else said, You dont even need to buy a Jack, just use the Jack that came with ur car, U need a jack stand if you dont want to die in the process, and make sure even the jackstand is secure. some wrenches, and maybe 2 hours of your time for first timer. PM me if u want more details.
oh, you have to pay them the 96 dollars diagnois fee. just dont do anything else. 800 something for those crap is a rip off.

ITs not that hard to load sparkplugs.com in your browser. select the right model and see for yourself.
Even better, Expo1's pic shows the price ... clearly ...
rowteree 11-08-2007, 12:41 AM i was just asking..you don't have to be a jerk about it and i can read..
TheColonel 11-08-2007, 07:50 AM Thanks for the quick response everyone. I'll definately do it myself. $300 for parts is way better than $864 at the dealership. (I'd like to know why thier mechanics are worth $150/hr. I hope they have doctorates or something. Otherwise, I'm quitting the banking industry and picking up a wrench)
I fear I may be stuck with thier stupid $96 diagnostic fee. I'll have to take a look at what I signed when i dropped it off.
I appreciate all the help!

I think you have to pay the 96 diagnostic fee. Just pay them, and order your parts thru one of our site vendors. You'll get your part in a few days.
Do it yourself saves a lot of money.
cas2themoe 11-08-2007, 09:32 AM Does your RX8 fall into this VIN range? If so, did you have this Emission Recall 4206F done?

nycgps 11-08-2007, 09:53 AM ^^^ most dealership just gonna flash the ECU and call it a day.
If its really just coils and plugs you can replace it urself.
but you're at 57K miles. I guess u should go and complain about lost of power and stuff, call MNAO, see if you can get them to work on it.

Not if he's having the problems that are stated in that Recall. They BETTER and SHOULD change everything needed.
I would try that if I were him. See what happens.

*sigh*
I had some of the problems b4, my dealership didnt give a crap, they just flashed it and call it a day :(
If all dealership really did this recall property, there wouldnt be so many post about *oh I just did the recall X months ago, and now my engine is dead!*
Cuz theres no way Mazda will know if the Dealership actually follow the guideline.
oh also, nope, I do NOT have that sticker under my hood. You can go ahead and ask how many people on this forum alone has that sticker under their hood.
tajabaho1 11-08-2007, 11:46 AM sigh,
I stand corrected :)
TheColonel 11-08-2007, 06:42 PM My car is in that VIN range. I've had service since then. Should they have not performed this recall already?
Also, cas2themore, where can I get a full copy of that?

That is the important part unless you want like 19 more pages of crap, just print it out.
Edited tonight as I see "cas2themoe" provided you the link! Good Job!

LionZoo 11-08-2007, 10:09 PM If he's at 57k, shouldn't he get it warrantied since the powertrain warranty got extended to 60k?

If he hasn't had the recall I think that they will do it if he presents the paperwork and doesn't try to force it down their throats. In answer to your question....to be honest........you'd think it would be, but I'm not sure.

My sticker is located on the wall of the door jam, drivers side.
Unfortunately, seems like majority of Mazda dealerships are half assed bastards when it comes to the 8, like the one NYC went to. I have said it many times, we can only really count on ourselves to maintain and make this car great. We get no love from Mazda, thats for damn sure. Like a friend of mine (initials CRH) recently stated, "mazda is only interested in putting band aids on the 8 long enough til the warranties expire". So true.
