View Full Version : Vibration issues: conclusion
zeblien 10-19-2007, 06:26 PM recap: Car vibrates visibly. The passanger seat will shake light contents right off. The mirrors shake and blurs the reflections.
occurs while in gear only, at idle: 800rpm
Dealership says it is the ignition coils, replaces. No fix.
Dealership looks again, says is normal, all cars with my millage shake that bad or worse (17,000, auto, shinka).
Today, I asked them to start one on the lot and show me, they charged the battery and let it run until idle hit 800.
-----------
If that was the car I rode in when I was looking to buy this car, I would have laughed at it when I passed one. It was ridiculously loud and harsh.
Neither the service tech or I could read anything in the mirrors, not even the license plate behind us. "This is the vehicle's normal wear".
-----------
MNMO wont do anything because the "dealer" is their eyes and ears and best equipped to determine what is wrong. Because they were able to reproduce the issue in another vehicle for sale, nothing can be done.
There you have it. Rotarys are doomed to be the over-caffeinated vehicles of the road.
My License plate will soon say: H8Mazda(well, something better, but you get it).
Mazurfer 10-19-2007, 06:29 PM Motor Mounts?????????????
And the rest is just you letting off steam.
Brettus 10-19-2007, 06:30 PM can you post a vid - does not sound normal to me .
zeblien 10-19-2007, 06:35 PM I can take one with my phone, I dont know how good it will look.
Dealer checked the motor mounts.
And not being able to read anything in the rear view mirror is not normal, or I hope not.
Uncivilizedracer 10-19-2007, 06:39 PM You seriously got something else going on - something got to be loose im going to say hell no to that being normal.

Seriously........if it is vibrating that bad take it to another dealer. If they fix it, then call MNAO again and tell them, and also go back to original dealer.......talk with owner or at least highest service person you can find and tell them they are idiots and you won't be back!
I don't know that it's motor mounts or not, but you have an 06 so you are still under warranty.........don't let them off the hook!
zeblien 10-19-2007, 06:45 PM I have spoke with MNAO and they tell me that the they rely on the dealer to make that diagnostic since they can not be there with the car.
There is only one other dealer, and they do not have a Rotary mechanic. The best they told me last time I had a question and took it to them was " well we can see if another car on the lot does it ".
Also, I spoke with the service manager, and the lvl 2 manager of this dealer for other issues I was having (refusal to give me a loaner car for warranty work). MNAO worked that out, but the managers are assholes.

I fully understand you , I just think you may have two choices at this point.
1.) Go to another dealer no matter how much of a pain it is and maybe even tell them the other place can't fix it.
2.) Show up at the present dealer every week and bug them till they do something, but this can be dangerous in some ways.
Anybody else??????
Revvittupp 10-19-2007, 07:01 PM I agree, ifnd the next closest Mazda dealer with a Rotary Tech. No matter how far away it is, it is worth it.
zeblien 10-19-2007, 07:10 PM Alright. I got a vid of the shake, and the sound of the knocking my engine makes.
Figuring out where to host it.
zeblien 10-19-2007, 07:22 PM Video of shaking

The camera sucks and it is resting on the door frame. Was to dark to catch the mirrors blurring.
Here is the audio + video. Sorry it is 4mb

8 Maniac 10-19-2007, 08:15 PM kinda hard to tell what's different... a good amount of cars would make enough vibration though the body to shake a camera like that I think. I know what you're talking about, but only had that vibration once for some reason. The only time I've noticed too much vibration to be able to see clearly in the mirrors was well over 100 mph... so I can say that for you to have that much vibration is not normal.
zeblien 10-19-2007, 08:58 PM What bout the knocking in the 2nd link?
zoom44 10-19-2007, 09:07 PM i cant hear anything in those vids . take a drive to somewhere there are more rx-8 owners. like phoenix
MrCairo 10-20-2007, 12:11 AM The idle doesn't sound good at all. Since this only occurs when the engine is in gear it may have something to do with the transmission - torque converter perhaps? It doesn't sound like motor mounts otherwise you would likely have the same issues when the transmission is in neutral.
As pretty much all the other posters have said, this type of vibration is not normal and should be covered by the factory warranty. Have the dealership run another automatic RX-8 in gear and see if they sound the same at 800 RPMs.
Good luck
swoope 10-20-2007, 12:30 AM motor mounts
and likely motor also...
a shot of the motor or shifter would be more helpful...
beers

You know I had them and they did. The jumepd and started a 2005 auto with 20k miles and it was a sick car no ways around it, but again, they said it was normal.
We couldn't read the license plate on the car behind us because the mirrors blurred everything so bad, and the idle was LOUD.
DOMINION 10-20-2007, 12:22 PM Brettus I PMed you.
Chakara 10-26-2007, 10:53 PM Garcia are crooks - let University check it out and go from there.....
I bought my car in Santa Fe, but University Mazda is the only NM dealer I have faith in so far for service. Not great - but fair.
jmsinclair 10-27-2007, 09:59 PM how do you find a rotary tech?
astrozoom 10-29-2007, 10:20 PM The rotary (when running properly) is one of the smoothest engines I have experienced. If you are experiencing vibrations so bad that you can't read a close license plate in your rear view mirror, there is something wrong with the car. Any dealer that tells you different is incompetent!
stephi jane 10-29-2007, 10:42 PM over-caffeinated. haha i love it.
also, dealers are lazy. hope everything is sorted out for you! :D
Typical slack-arse dealers that just want to sell you the car & get rid of you.
Have an 03-model + 4AT version here with stuffed engine mounts.
Vibrates at idle in gear. Have gotten used to it as I wait for some bargain engine mounts (+ bracket) to pop up on E-bay etc. Being an 03-model & out of warranty Mazda are not interested in any assistance in fixing their design fault.
Also, check your plugs as they can cause similar symptoms if well passed their use by date.
Dealers are lieing to you if they say the plugs are good for over 50k km. Change them at 25k km or less..............

Renesis07 10-30-2007, 09:11 AM mine vibrates and rattles when in idle and my dealer said the vibrations are normal, all RX8s vibrate, its not bad enough not to read out of my mirrors though. My exhaust makes a little rattling noise and my cockpit smells like exhaust after a good rev, they checked for leaks, found nothing, and concluded its normal wear and theres nothing wrong.
Renesis07 10-30-2007, 09:12 AM I got 58K on mine and I drive it like an indy car
