View Full Version : rx8 on the Dyno Dynamics
4g63Rotary 09-15-2007, 09:39 PM Okay guys just got the old 8 up on the Dyno today and was mildly disappointed, not because it didn't make allot of power but because it ran less than what most 8 are running stock "I think". 156hp
I was under the impression that most 8's do about 175-185 stock RWH please correct me if I'm wrong, it might make me feel better. :icon_no2:
He did like 8 or so runs while trying different things and got no where we couldn't figure it out.
There was an 8 there a day or so before might be someone here it did like 174-175 with a pretty good looking chart where mine looked a little suspect. Mine spiked left and right and only increased upward very little.
We thought it might be the DSC or some sort of governor keeping it flat at 5600 rpms
we tried to turn it off, the ecu cut it right back on no matter how many oddball procedures we tried.
Anyway if this is normal cool if not could someone help me out I would like to try getting the car up with its competitors, Lets face it a non-turbo rotary is kinda dead end I'm sure many would disagree and thats cool.
My car is just about stock minus the Magna Flow exhaust and the "Simota intake which might be coming off".
I had to photoshop the exploded view I forgot to have him print it out sorry!

4g63Rotary 09-15-2007, 09:44 PM DAMN just noticed this thread after posting!
The RX-8 Dyno Results Compilation
kersh4w 09-15-2007, 09:50 PM do you have the automatic transmission version?
4g63Rotary 09-15-2007, 09:50 PM six speed
that was 5th gear
kersh4w 09-15-2007, 09:51 PM 6 speed automatic?
4g63Rotary 09-15-2007, 09:53 PM manny  I'll be back gotta leave for a little while :)
kersh4w 09-15-2007, 10:01 PM that sucks, im sorry.
also, the temperature might have been really hot. so that has something to do with it. and several dynos give consistently different results. i forgot which one gives the lowest, you might have used that one. but 150whp is pretty sad if i say so myself.
its to bad you cant take that dyno to mazda and say there is no way you are losing 90 hp through the drivetrain and that you demand a turbo installed under warranty.
edit: uh, why didnt you goto 6th gear? those dyno graphs tend to go up as the gears go up. thats where your missing 30hp might be.
mysql101 09-15-2007, 10:09 PM the dip in your dyno chart is normal, it happens in the 5.5k rpm range as ports open up.
I had a dyno run on a dyno dynamics as well. only "performance" mod I have is a k&n drop in filter. my best was 167.8hp after 3 pulls. I've heard that dyno dynamics bring in lower, but more accurate readings?? Something along those lines.
Brettus 09-16-2007, 01:47 AM When mine was stock it was about 169 on a dyno dynamics and I'm pretty sure my motor is strong .
Just looking at the graph indicates that it was not taken to the hp peak as it stops just after the 2nd port opens . The 8 normally peaks after that valve has opened at 8500 rpm . Have a look at the dyno thread & you will see what I mean
4g63Rotary 09-16-2007, 02:31 AM Thanks guys! the guy at the shop "linh" really cool dude told me that the other 8 had some sort of chip in the ecu, I assume its some kind of racing flash.
But whats odd is that I didn't even hit the 160's range my motor seems very capable of it. Its very responsive almost as if it could take on most cars in its league, up until they pass me :) lmao
Does the dsc play a role in limiting our hp output?
Thanks again
I'll check out the main thread see what I can learn.

yeah thats what he told me and I believed him after I saw a 240sx with a Skyline swap do 159hp on that very same dyno. He told me that the guy came back that same day after fixing a few hoses and uping the boost a few lbs. picked up an extra 20-30hp!

hahahaha
even I can laugh at this :)
Hymee 09-16-2007, 03:56 AM six speed
that was 5th gear
Thats part of the problem - wheel speed is too fast in 5th gear for "saftey" at the top end. We normally go in 3rd.
Here is my Dyno Dynamics dyno runs from around 4 years ago for a comparison:

134 kW is basically 180 HP.
Cheers,
Hymee.
Brettus 09-16-2007, 05:34 AM shameless plug there Hymee- on ya :)
that would have been 4th for your chart - no way would 3rd be up to 190km/hr

LOL +1
Whaddya mean I was doing 160 kph in reverse just yesterday
hehe (shameless free post for me)
Rhythmic 09-17-2007, 08:21 AM I thought you had to hold the DSC button for approx. 8-10 sec. to fully disable it to run on a dyno (never done it just read here). Even when I was getting my speedo calibrated I had to do this. It was done on a dyno-like device with the rear wheels running on drums. With DSC on the car would bog itself down.
zoom44 09-17-2007, 10:07 AM 5th is 1:1 BUT wheel speed is to much- dyno in 3rd or 4th.

Yeah we tried that one too and it does shut off when it does the dsc off light and the traction light come on. But we had to do this before we put it on the dyno otherwise the car wouldn't let it shut off.
Only problem we had was that the damn ecu is so smart it would turn the dsc on the second we picked up some speed. The "sound" guess was that the ecu may have detected no front wheel motion making the car think something is wrong "who knows" .
The only other thing I noticed was that most of you are dyno-ing on a level dyno. His was on a ramp because the dyno has yet to be put in the ground. This may have had something to do with the dsc tripping.
4g63Rotary 09-17-2007, 01:18 PM 5th is 1:1 BUT wheel speed is to much- dyno in 3rd or 4th.
And when you do this should you still take it up to 8500rpms?
Oh I also noticed the guy shifting kinda early does this make a difference on our cars or is it that he was red-lining very quickly on the dyno wheels cause its not pushing the car
Sorry for the dumb @$$ questions new to doing real performance testing when compared to my butt dyno!
shaunv74 09-17-2007, 01:55 PM You'll need to turn off the DSC by holding it down for 8-10 seconds until the "slippery when wet" sign lights up. Then the computer won't bog the car when it senses the rear wheels turning but not the front.
Also you should run it up to redline. Can you post your graphs in RPM? That makes it more meaningful for us to see if your curve is different from someone elses. Also it looks like from Hyme's post that Dyno Dynamics dyno's tend to read lower than Dynojet dynos. Your best bet is to compare to other RX8's on Dyno Dynamics dynos to see if you're in the right ballpark.

It doesn't matter if he shifts early in the lower gears, 'cause he isn't doing the power pull then. He is just getting the rollers safely up to speed, just like you would normally acelerate the car, but it doesn't need to be WOT to redline.
Once he is up to the begginning speed, he tells the dyno to start putting full load on the load cell, and starts measuring his WOT power run. Normally the operator will get off it when she starts to lay over (ie. the power starts to fall off). If the operator is inexperienced with these engines, he could mistaken the port transition for that peak power, but they need to push on.
I hope that helps explain what is going on.
BTW - We also did an experiment where we tricked the computer into thinking the front wheels where spinning as well...
Cheers,
Hymee.

Thanks I get it now :)
How did you manage to trick the computer like that cause we got the dsc to shut off completely got all the little lights and junk :) but somewhere along the line it got pissed off and came back on.
Razz1 09-17-2007, 05:42 PM Best way is to pull the room fuse. Then the whole DSC is shut down.
I think I got 167 RWP and had the same problem as you.
A year later I dyno'd at the So. Calf dyno run. Drove 35 miles and then put it on the dyno. No waiting. Got 198.6 RWP. Nice HP gain for pulling the fuse.

Interesting! cool I'll try it see what happens.
I guess I want to start building this thing as much as I can this is my first rotary and it has grown on me as many said it would so we'll see!
Hopefully I don't end up with Evo-syndrome like so many others :P the 8 seems to be pretty solid despite the little things.

You did replace the fuse before the pull, right? Or did you leave it out?
Jedi54 09-25-2007, 04:10 PM ummm, is this the part where I worry about having put 19 RX-8's on a dyno and doing 5th gear pulls the whole day???
zoom44 09-25-2007, 04:59 PM nahh its just that alot of times you see very scattered grainy results with the 5th gear pulls where the little gadget that picks of the tach signal looses it etc, among other things
