In talking with a mechanic about buying an RX8, he said to stay away from 05's because they had "electrical problems" which were solved with the 06's... any comments?

Instead of staying away from the 05's you should stay away from that mechanic.

They must have screwed it up from '04 then because my '04's electrical system has been solid as a church.

^ seems like thats true for all 8's though. lotsa information about our cars, mostly crap.
