AM Radio Interference Issue

Here's what I have, and I want to stress that it is not electrical noise from a bad ground or engine noise, etc. I listen a lot to sports talk radio on the AM band. After about 10 minutes or so, loud interference noise runs through the speakers. The noise will run up and down from bass to treble and has absolutely NO correlation with the engine RPM. It fades over time but really makes it difficult to listen to a Sox game (being on WRKO doesn't help).

System: Kenwood X889 HU and JL 1000/1 and 450/4 amps.

Is it possible this is amp noise?

Dude, that was like SO helpful. When I want to listen to LOCAL sports radio, I'll be sure to look on my installed Sirius radio. Oh, wait it's only on local AM. WHICH WAS THE POINT YOU DOLT.

My guess would not be amp noise. If it were it would be there as soon as you turn your car on. Being 10 minutes in I would guess it would have to do with the fans for the cooling system. Some car guru, like MM or something, I am sure could narrow it down a lot better than I...but it is at least a place to start. I would check your ground for noise. If the noise is only there with the amp maybe put a noise filter on the amp ground and see if that helps enough to get you by. Then again...AM with an amp may just be really bad no matter what you do.

Hmm, I did give a call sign and indicate Sox games, which even my three year nephew could figure out was baseball, and not "generally" available locally on FM. Dolt.

I'll look into it. Some additional food for thought: This isn't a new problem for me but I've "lived with it" for about four years now. Maybe I'll run the radio while parked and car off and see how long it takes if at all. I've had it on two cars with the same amps but different Kenwood HUs. I didn't have this problem before the JL amps (I used Kenwood amps previously), but I can't say with any confidence it started when I got them.

Make sure you only go to ACC, instead of ON, on the key. If you go to ON you may let the fans kick on.

AM is more sensitive to interference and a ground loop is used for an antenna. So far the only horse that you have tried to beat is saying AM is crap. It isn't an answer to a problem.

Just an update that the issue also occurs when just in ACC. I wonder if the tinted windows are an issue.

Windows tinted with metallic tints will have a hard time picking up AM stations. But it would be a constant problem, not something that comes and goes.

Obviously, it's caused by some function of the car, and I think fans are a good guess as they're rather timed (assuming an average temperature/driving style) and fans do tend to pull a lot of current.. The debate over on the Rx7 forum is always mechanical fans' engine drag vs. the extra alternator load for an electrical fan.. I digress, either way, you may want to try something like this: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IDotetH...ch=radio+noise I'm sure you can pick one up @ circuit city, and they only cost about 10 bucks.. It may help isolate your problem.
