View Full Version : Looky what I found... a turbo!
So this Volvo turbo has been sitting around for years... it is for a boat we don't have any more. Now that I am bored, I wanna TC something...
Thoughts?
I am thinking Turbo Polaris Ranger......or a Yamaha 4 Stroke Outboard for our Zodiac...or anything really, be creative.
BTW, this is a marine turbo, so the flow map is very vertical, at 16-18lb/min of air it is most efficient, but by 25 lb/min of air it is already out of breath.... (think marine engine, narrow RPM range for long time). But hey, I don't really care if it the best turbo for an application... just as long as it will spool up at all.

Fun in the sandbox...
PS. Don't say TC a Hummer, those things are so damn heavy it wouldn't be any fun anyway... they do have a bunch of factory TC ones already; we just don't have any of those.
Opethdtr 08-30-2007, 01:31 PM Do you guys have rubber ducks? Turbo the rubber duck!!
shaunv74 08-30-2007, 01:35 PM a TC outboard motor would be pretty cool. What do you have to play with? Any golf carts around?
A Polaris Ranger and Gator we have are like 4wd golf carts.... that is one I am eyeing right now.
I don't know what a rubber duck is... we have Z Boats with outboards, air compressors, generators, 4wd golf cart thingys, a suburban, one of the navy units has a dune buggy, uh could mail order something (like a really big RC car, but prolly won't flow enough)....
shaunv74 08-30-2007, 01:41 PM ooh. Turbo the Suburban. I don't know what it flows but that would definitely fit the "narrow" power band. It redlines at 4500rpm right?
The dunebuggy could be fun too...
There is an abandoned Suburban, needs a new tranny. If we get that, then we can TC, gut the interior, ghetto drop the suspension and make it pretty fun. Depends on the Tranny.
I would totally do the dune buggy... but it isn't mine so have to negotiate... I guess we could buy a go cart.
I know someone who is currently looking around for options on turboing/SCin a scooter.. heh

Thats sounds like a plan Kane. Depending on the tranny could probably rebuild it. Ghetto rig the forks, gears and all.

Sounds like the suburban toy would be the fun one. I'm sure you can find a GM tranny around somewhere. Maybe steal one out of a hummer. They made millions of those so they're what $150?:)
Jedi54 08-30-2007, 01:54 PM I vote for the 4wd golf cart
I think the suburban would be the most logical choice, and really the easiest to do since there is a lot of info/parts I can get. But it would also be cool to do something outrageous, since I can... but blowing up an engine would be an undesired result.
You can see how I am torn.
Do you guys have rubber ducks? Turbo the rubber duck!!
PS. The SEALS typically call 'em IBS, Infaltable Boat Small / Itty Bitty Ships, they are also know as Z Boats, Zodiacs, Combat Rubber Raiding Craft, Mark V boat..... and the list goes on.
But they are all the same kind of thing.
Jedi54 08-30-2007, 02:01 PM I think the golf car would be cheaper to blow up, wouldn't it? (if worst case scenario happens)
There is an abandoned Suburban, needs a new tranny. If we get that, then we can TC, gut the interior, ghetto drop the suspension and make it pretty fun
that could get expensive...
You are prolly right Jedi... I don't really know $$$, I am willing to bet the outboards are the most, but we have some old beat to death ones as well.
I know someone who is currently looking around for options on turboing/SCin a scooter.. heh
If they wanna send it over here, we can talk.
snipaz2420 08-30-2007, 02:08 PM i vote for the golf cart to!

Floyd 08-30-2007, 02:35 PM What kinda lawn mower do ya got? LMAO
Aero8 08-30-2007, 02:44 PM I vote for the dune buggy. find something the Navy guys will take for trade.
abbid 08-30-2007, 03:09 PM so let me get this correct....
you get bored and decide to turbo something?
LUCKY.
alnielsen 08-30-2007, 03:23 PM Dune Buggy, put gun mounts on it. One on top of the cage for a M2 and a M60 for the driver. Then go play Rat Patrol.
MazdaManiac 08-30-2007, 03:29 PM I've got two words for you:
John Deere
Jedi54 08-30-2007, 03:30 PM whatever you decide to Turbo, just don't do THIS: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=125617
rglbegl 08-30-2007, 03:35 PM Do you own a lawn mower?
Mazurfer 08-30-2007, 04:27 PM PS. The SEALS typically call 'em IBS, Infaltable Boat Small / Itty Bitty Ships, they are also know as Z Boats, Zodiacs, Combat Rubber Raiding Craft, Mark V boat..... and the list goes on.
But they are all the same kind of thing.
Put it on your re-breather? How about the underwater sled? Ha ha
chickenwafer 08-30-2007, 04:31 PM Ghetto up that Suburban, man! Slam it on the ground, make it a roadster, and hang the turbo way up in the air so you have to cut a hole in the hood for it to pop-out, and make it stupid loud (straight downpipe and don't recuirc the w/g). I'm sure you can find a trans pretty easy, and it would be pimp
I've got two words for you:
John Deere
Our Gator is John Deere, 6 wheels, the Ranger is 4 wheels.
The ghetto suburban also appeals to me, ah hell they all do. I def want something to go fast.
No lawn mowers guys.... it is the desert remember?
Dune Buggy, put gun mounts on it. One on top of the cage for a M2 and a M60 for the driver. Then go play Rat Patrol.
HAHA, we were just talking about that. War is hell.
I think we would make it about 8 feet with that stuff on before SECFOR took us down.
I think the outboard is the current front runner...
I can push up to 105 HP before the transom gives out.... not sure if I want to be in a Zodiac with that much power....
mac11 08-31-2007, 09:40 AM I think the outboard is the current front runner...
I can push up to 105 HP before the transom gives out.... not sure if I want to be in a Zodiac with that much power....
but you know, deep down, you really do.
but you know, deep down, you really do.
Damn you! Get out of my head.
Found not one but TWO Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series! The crappier one will become the parts car. We are going on Saturday to get them, if they are still there then we have our turblown project!!!!!
Not sure if I want to keep it a 4WD, or ghetto rig the suspension for high speed road warrior action... LOL either way I think we will be having fun. Pics on Saturday (knock on wood).
PS. I will DEF need an external wastegate... anyone want to donate one to the war effort :lol2:?
PS. I am not sure if I can sell it, but what do you think about a 1/2 mile speed run culminating in me driving it off a ramp into the ocean???? HAHAH I will have dive gear on of course, safety first.
mac11 09-06-2007, 09:06 AM PS. I am not sure if I can sell it, but what do you think about a 1/2 mile speed run culminating in me driving it off a ramp into the ocean???? HAHAH I will have dive gear on of course, safety first.
Push the parts car down a hill. Kepp the good one 4WD and give it to me for a tow vehicle.
I would def raffle it off or something with the money going to a charity. But I think it would be all but impossible to register it in the states.
Feras 09-06-2007, 09:59 AM PS. I am not sure if I can sell it, but what do you think about a 1/2 mile speed run culminating in me driving it off a ramp into the ocean???? HAHAH I will have dive gear on of course, safety first.
i will fly to kuwait to videotape this :)
mac11 09-06-2007, 10:00 AM you don't need to register it if you are just going to put a cage in it drive down to a busy intersection and see how many times you can roll it over. mwahahaha.
I bet the Land Cruiser fans are going to go ape when word gets out how I am defacing a classic 4wd....
Feras 09-06-2007, 01:17 PM dude those land cruisers are awesome but everyone including land cruiser fans is gonna have to admit that they were underpowered...if you keep it running bring it stateside in a big crate labeled bananas...don't worry customs will not check i told them my buddy Mr. Benjamin Franklin said it was ok.
HAHA, you never know.....
I am thinking 40 Series with 250 WHP???? Maybe? Should be fun.
Picking up the cars tomorrow. If all goes well then I will be cutting and welding some manifolds this weekend.
Well in order to have a successful turbo project... you need an engine.
Look what we got today.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107101&stc=1&d=1189271865
These bad boys haven't been run in a long time!
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107102&stc=1&d=1189271865
Soooo, we cleaned them up and started taking stock of what don't work.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107103&stc=1&d=1189271865
After a little TLC... there IS an engine there. Bone Dry... no fluids at all.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107104&stc=1&d=1189271865
Add a fuel pump, oil, clutch fluid, new master cylinder, bleed clutch line, check all the other gadgets, work on some ignition timing, clean and de-gunk the carb, pray to various deities... and not only did it turn over, but we got her running!!!!
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107105&stc=1&d=1189271865
DRDM = Divers Radical Death Machine II
It turns and everything.... don't brake... I knew we forgot to bleed something!!!
That is alright we want it to GO, not STOP
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107106&stc=1&d=1189272585
Engine is pretty nice and strong... did a few burnouts just to test
Then with his new found freedom, Doc tried to run away?!?!? Where are you going Doc?
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107107&stc=1&d=1189272585
Tomorrow we are doing the brakes and looking at the rear axle (something is rubbing back there). Then we will be moving on the the POWER MODS!!!!!!
You can FI a carb... but it seems like PITA, so we are arguing about EFI kit or not... we need some free parts or $$$ I guess :lol2:. One way of the other at least we have most of the components required to TC a car.
Turbo? - Check
Car? - Check
Everything Else? - Ehhhhhhh, we have a welder.
BigRed 09-08-2007, 01:21 PM this now looks like the fun is about to start!
myriadshalaks 09-08-2007, 01:47 PM Do you guys have rubber ducks? Turbo the rubber duck!!

BigRed 09-08-2007, 03:12 PM ha^
MrsArmyDiver 09-08-2007, 11:09 PM Kane how did you get those back to your det? That is hilarious. I definitely want pics or video!! You better keep me in the loop!
Have fun and be careful! LU
Brettus 09-08-2007, 11:32 PM Love the drive off the ramp idea . Can you get some explosives to go off as you hit the water ?
After joking with some of the divers, I thought a little harder about hitting the water at 50 MPH... not a good idea!
So going to have to think of another plan.
Kane how did you get those back to your det? That is hilarious. I definitely want pics or video!! You better keep me in the loop!
Have fun and be careful! LU
See first picture...
Love you too. We just put them on the back of those trucks and drove them here.
Clavius 09-09-2007, 12:17 PM Kane that is yeah.. wow.. just ghetto the shyt outa it.. and just document eveything.. haha.. some magazine will find interest in this I bet. And if anything may donate parts?! now that would be awsome.
Clavious,
I was thinking and hoping the same thing!!! I have the most ridiculous spot for the turbo.... you guys will love it.
Update: Brakes and Power Steering work, suspension is fixed and tires all have air now. We have an old, beat up but very drivable Land Cruiser... now let's break it!
Anyone know how easy it is to convert to a blow thru carb??? And will I still need a bonnet? That and the wastegate seem to be the only big things right now.
BigRed 09-09-2007, 02:11 PM awesome, this could be good!
Ok trying to get the base placement of the turbo.
My idea was to jam that bad boy directly into the carb, see picture 1.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107355&stc=1&d=1189534160
But I was shot down... There are some serious exhaust issues with that side (steering and brakes are in the way). So we thought "well we could go remote turbo" sleeper style.
BUT HELLS TO THE NO! Sleeper? Come on!!! Can this bad boy really hide in the crowd? So the new plan is to mount turbo here.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107356&stc=1&d=1189534160
Cut a hole in the hood.... instant CAI!, then run the intake track through our ghetto v-mount intercooler.... made out of the radiator of the second vehicle. YEAH BABY!
So the turbo and IC will be above the hood line... pure awesomeness.
Next is piping, and oil for the turbo. I am thinking supply from the Oil Filter and return to the valve cover??? The oil filter is right below the power steering pump in the second picture.
Feras 09-11-2007, 02:27 PM okay you can't call something DRDM II and not tell the story of DRDM I that would just be cruel lol
shaunv74 09-11-2007, 02:32 PM Kane...you !!!
Clavius 09-11-2007, 02:33 PM okay you can't call something DRDM II and not tell the story of DRDM I that would just be cruel lol
+1 he has a point my friend!! lol
So does anyone know of any Land Cruiser Enthusiast Magazines?!? I can see the article title now "Land Cruiser + Turbo + Army divers in the desert equals...."
Josche 09-11-2007, 02:54 PM okay you can't call something DRDM II and not tell the story of DRDM I that would just be cruel lol
I think they labeled one of the trucks DRDM 1 and the other DRDM II... Look at the first set of pictures.
DemonRX-8 09-11-2007, 04:05 PM That is hilarious. Is that a 22RE in that truck? Have you checked some of the Yota forums? I'm sure they'd have a lots of advice on this!
Oh, and the South Park water/oil tank is pretty funny too!
Thanks for the feedback guys!!!
Feras - we named the cars when we first got them Divers Radical Death Machine 1 and 2 - 1 ended up as the parts car. As for the DRDM... we don't know if that is other people or us that end up killed.
Demon - the engine is the 3F not the 3FE (which would have been nice since it would have been fuel injected).
Clavious - if anyone knows a mag that might be interested let me know, and I will submit it or email them a link or whatever. As for your equation; the answer is most likely (broken land cruiser) HAHA but hopefully it will all work out.
PS. The engine has 225K Kilometers on it.... so we SHOULD rebuild it. But that will exceed our budget of zero dollars... so we won't.
ac3mastuh 09-12-2007, 02:32 PM lol, this is gonna be great when this is finished
Here are some "highly technical" specs for our exhaust manifold / downpipe. Our engineering process has spanned many hours as is the culmination of well..... ghetto.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=107626&stc=1&d=1190040610
Now that we have a basic shape and dimensions; we need to get our hands on some piping. Once we get oil lines, wastegate and hot side piping done we will install the turbo and make sure it runs and makes boost, then we will start in on the intake piping / sweet intercooler mod (aka radiator from DRDM 1) and finally the carb.
The flanges for the exhaust piping will come from the exhaust system; we are going to cut off the flanges and weld our piping to them, then we can bolt them on as half the manifold has to be installed below the engine and the other half above. So that ball of gray tape and manila folders will end up as two seperate pieces on the exhsuast side running to the turbo.
Still need a wastegate and blow thru carb.... anyone know where to get some cheap ones?!?!?
The hits just keep on coming!

mac11 09-17-2007, 10:09 AM does that thing have an optima battery??? WTf?
Don't hate... this is a serious performance machine mac11.
JK, it was one of the spare ones we have around here at the det.
dtorre 09-17-2007, 10:55 AM You army guys...How do you get so much downtime lol...Im gonna be back in the box in less than two weeks and won't have the internet for 2 months atleast :Eyecrazy:
Come to the party!!!!!!
Nah, things are real slow for us these days..... frusterating.
BigRed 10-01-2007, 10:35 PM Kane, any more updates?
MrsArmyDiver 10-02-2007, 02:37 AM Kane, any more updates?
Kane is, as we say "out" for the moment. I haven't talked to him but once on the phone in about two weeks. Never talked about this project so I'm sure he will have a ton of updates when he gets back - whenever that is.
BigRed 10-02-2007, 06:58 AM cool. cant wait!
Sorry guys, apparently I still have to do my day job!
Well, updates:
- We made a new top - - - - sewed it together with 550 cord. Yesssss!
- We have a line on a wastegate for free (nevermind)
- We have the first half of the exhaust piping done, the second half MAY be done this weekend.
Also got some new seats..... and covered them with some nice pleature sewed with..... 550 cord. This thing is Baller status now.
Pics soon.
Well no news really - been too busy to work on this.
BUT - here is a picture of some other work we have done.
West Coast Chopper/ OCC fans - meet Middle East Choppers
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=109542&stc=1&d=1193740398
This is actually the second one - the first was even BETTER hahaha.
chetrickerman 10-30-2007, 07:25 AM that is fucking hilarious, keep up the good work!
Rootski 11-02-2007, 11:00 PM Try and get an ejection seat from the Air Force. That would make your high-speed run into the water a lot more interesting.
Everyone is trying to kill me......
I told the CO my plan about driving it into the water - he laughed; then got quiet and said, "You know..... that COULD work...." But I am still not quite crazy enough to hit the water at 50-60 MPH.
chetrickerman 11-03-2007, 12:07 PM haha, you have their full support! PUSH AHEAD!!
Well - we got the interior all done; and the downpipe (or rather up pipe) fabricated.
Got some video too I will be uploading in a second.
Note the high speed interior - hehehehe
Have not yet measured one thing and have spent $0.... still need wastegate and carb which we are not going to find here...... booo!
Interior courtesy of plywood, foam, pleature type material, two seats from a junked LMTV, and rubber mat for the floor. We reused all the tracks and seat frames.

Listen to the POWER! See the flames!
Next video will be with the turbo on it - or it on Fire....
Turning it over -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L91yTKkouAE
Fire in the hole -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCnyVNUf55M
A few more pics.

http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=109998&stc=1&d=1194326430
Final Fitment -the pipe runs from the left side of the block up between the block and the firewall; then over the block to the right side where it will connect to the hot side of the turbo.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=109999&stc=1&d=1194326849
And It is a tight fit - I had to use a 30 pound crowbar to move the block a few inches to we could test fit..... which then promptly slipped and beaned me in the head.
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=110000&stc=1&d=1194326430
I have a serious headache and a nice goosbump ..... No Pain No Gain.
chickenwafer 11-06-2007, 12:05 AM This is gonna be awesome! I can't wait to hear you do some boosted burnouts.
I am trying to think of something you could use as a wastegate if you can't source one. If you can find some sort of pressure differential actuator laying around or even a solenoid you can make a trap door that is controlled by either.
Jethro Tull 11-06-2007, 12:06 AM This is insane. Instead of rocketing it into the water, have you thought about a snorkel? See how far/deep you can get under power?
We have a lot of pressure regulators (der we are divers) - the problem is that they are all for higher pressure than we need; unless we want to boost to 3500 PSI - tempting...
I don't really mind spending 225 for a wastegate (although is ruins the free part fo the build). The real bitch is going to be the carb - since I HAVE NO idea how to make ours blow thru and so may have to buy one of those another few hundred bucks... so it may total 500-600 for the whole project.
Jethrow - We were talking about that today; it would be fun just not as spectacular of an ending.
chickenwafer 11-06-2007, 02:50 AM What kind of carb is on the beast now?
Just make a hat to mount on top of the carbs throat. The main problem with blow through setups is if you run too much boost the floats in the bowls can get messed up. I ran into a similar problem when helping a friend turbo his Harley Sporty 1200. At 70kpa or so the floats would "jitter" around and cause a disruption in the fuel flow, and we even cracked a float one time at 82kpa of boost.
If you run low boost it should be a problem, tho
If you can find a really low pressure regulator to use as a wastegate that would be perfect. Maybe even try modifying a spring- the problem is you'll have no idea how much PSI that spring s good for until you start pushing boost through it, which can be tricky.
So just a hat would solve my problem?
I know I said next video was the turbo - but I lied.
This is the downpipe complete - now you can visualize a 90 right hand turn over to the hot side of the turbo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUtPpTlkDI4 - PS we mostly did this to shoot flames again.
My new idea is to run the boost to the fuel tank and equalize pressure that way; with a higher flow fuel pump and less that 10 PSI I might be ok.....
shaunv74 11-06-2007, 11:18 PM Love the flames.
Keep up the good work. If you sell some of the pieces off the car to raise money for parts you could still call it free.:)
chickenwafer 11-07-2007, 01:12 AM So just a hat would solve my problem?
Yes.
Just make a piece out of aluminum or w/e to form an air-tight seal over the carb and blow boost thru it. You may actually be able to re-use the stock air cleaner housing and modify it.
A draw-thru setup would be better, but more expensive since you'd have to relocated the carb, make a new intake manifold, redo all the exhaust stuff you've done, etc.
I would disassemble the carb and check the floats and make sure they're good. In a vehicle that old and beaten, the floats might need to be replaced, and boost will speed up the process.
I would also re-jet it so you don't run lean. A jet kit shouldn't be too expensive. Just grab the manufacturer's name off carb housing and a jet kit should only be a google search away.
Good idea to run a reference line to the fuel tank to pressurize it. Just make sure you don't run too much boost or you could blow your fuel tank, and that would be bad.
Thanks for the advice!!!!!
I will get on it - got the send and return lines today!!! This is now a joint service operation as the Naval Coastal Warefare had some scrap Turbo parts they let us have.
Closer....
Jethro Tull 11-07-2007, 10:02 AM Now that the Navy is involved, you can see if a carrier catapult is available. Now THAT would be spectacular...
eviltwinkie 11-07-2007, 10:04 AM Haa haa....niiiice....
Not big Navy small Navy - LOL think PT boats.... the best I could do is get one of the 800 HP Turbo diesels they have....
chetrickerman 11-07-2007, 12:43 PM ha, thats it?!
Well the PT boats roll with two of them - so they move ok...
chetrickerman 11-07-2007, 01:15 PM it was sarcastic if you didnt catch it.
Right over my head -
It is late here. Maybe I need to sleep.
chetrickerman 11-07-2007, 01:24 PM i think so, hahaha, especially if you have PT in the morning. i hated that shit:icon_no2:
Always - been doing 2 a days for years. Goes with the job.
Jethro Tull 11-07-2007, 03:30 PM Not big Navy small Navy - LOL think PT boats.... the best I could do is get one of the 800 HP Turbo diesels they have....
Hmmm. OK, I'm thinking now of pontoon outriggers. Make this thing a true amphibian. Paddle tires or a PTO for a screw drive. And you may as well arm it. Can the Navy spare a torpedo?
I'm seeing Pentagon contract possibilities here, Kane... :lol2:
chetrickerman 11-07-2007, 03:33 PM Always - been doing 2 a days for years. Goes with the job.
oh i know
8 Maniac 11-07-2007, 07:31 PM Can the Navy spare a torpedo?:
HAHAHA I lol'd at that
HAHA - I could mount some DPV's under it for insertions.....
Off topic: We might be getting some DPV's - I love those things!!! Talk about fun.
mac11 11-07-2007, 11:18 PM Would a pressure regulator from an air compressor be available? Much lower pressure ranges than diving equiptment.
We do have a bunch of air compressors - but they operate from 150 PSI to 5000 PSI. Same kinda deal.
We do have a small AC for tires and stuff - but no junk parts.
Good idea though - I can ask around some other places.
What a day!!!
Well things are moving along nicely now. We have some fitment issues with not having the correct threading and flange pieces for the oil lines - solution? We have a welder and it is free!!!
Here is me welding the oil sending line fitting to the turbo - Hope we don't have to take that off....
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=110064&stc=1&d=1194537863
Then we had to find an oil outlet to send oil to the turbo - solution; oil filter and 2 pounds of JB Weld... oil changes are going to be a bitch now.
Then we mounted the turbo - and GASP ran it today! This thing sounds mean - and is OMG ridiculous!
If you see this in your rearview - you know it is time to get out of the way!
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=110065&stc=1&d=1194537863
And yes - that is the final location. Video shortly!
PS. My weld had some seepage so JB weld backed me up!
The story behind this video:
John the videographer was too smart to stand close to the car when I turned it over (:lol2:). So he is like 20 feet away convinced we are all about to die from impeller shards. I am behind the wheel - then once it is safe he comes closer; and then when he sees the oil seeping from your custom filter / oil send line; he yells "Hold" which is diver slang for the "merde has hit the fan". I kill it and he forgets to shut the camera off - the vid is like 2 minutes long of all the bugs we had first time out; but my net isn't fast enough to load it all. Still sounds cool!
We fixed the leaks and will work on the cold side soon!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJavKuw387M
Good stuff!!!!! HAHAHAHA
Jedi54 11-08-2007, 12:57 PM I'll have to check the videos when I get home. Lookin' awesome Kane, grats on getting it started up. Put a 50 cal on that badboy and you'll be set.

I'll have to check out the vid in a few.
When you have too much under the hood bling - to keep it under the hood.
CAI anyone?
PS. Oil leaks fixed.

eviltwinkie 11-09-2007, 04:27 AM That's simply pimptastic...
Now see if you can attach a snorkel with some pantyhose to prevent large amounts of dirt from getting sucked in...
Paint the snorkel pastel blue or something...heh
We'll be mounting an air filter soon.
And we were going to run the exhaust up the roofline - but I kinda like watching the turbine spin while I am driving.... or I am losing braincells - or both.
I'll do a DIY if someone wants to do it to their 8......
HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHA - breathe - HAHAAHAHAHAHA
swoope 11-09-2007, 04:44 AM We'll be mounting an air filter soon.

yep,
and good for you....
beers
eviltwinkie 11-09-2007, 04:49 AM Meh....braincells grow back right...
Cull the herd!!!
Since I will be driving mostly - I guess I shouldn't worry right?
Soon we'll all be so dumb - we'll have to become SEALS (wa wa waaaaa)

Haa...
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 08:24 AM that thing is awesome, i would defintily route it to trailer stacks, that would be even more badass!!
Trailer stacks has been mentioned - now to find some of those cool caps....
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 09:57 AM wait, the caps that are on top of the stacks and do the little jingle when the engine is on?
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 10:07 AM im assuming you dont have a hardware store around you, thats where my friend got his. otherwise, i dunno.
I'll find them - I am resourceful when motivated. Good idea Chet.
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 10:13 AM thanks, i just want to help my borthers out overseas, one of my good friends is in korea, damn i miss him.
heyarnold69 11-09-2007, 10:42 AM i just got back from a korea tour:) lol
Been there for 3 weeks back in 1998 - NO THANKS!!!!
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 10:53 AM yup, he says he is bored, but he is only a radio technician. my friend that i grew up with is going to be a ranger. i miss him too, good thing he is coming home for christmas, there are many cases o' beer that we need to drink!! btw, i was supposed to be a heavy machinery operator, but then one of the heavy machines ran over my foot, there goes my career!
Better than having it dropped on you. That happened here not too long ago - poor guy never had a chance.
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 11:02 AM very true. and i didnt even loose my foot, just had to go through 2 surgeries.
That does suck though man - nothing worse than getting hurt. Can't say your missing much.... it is kinda crappy over here :lol2:
chetrickerman 11-09-2007, 11:06 AM thats what i have heard from a lot of people.
WoodsOfGreenRx8 11-09-2007, 08:52 PM I just read this entire thread & wow. That is some great work there Kane! haha. If I ever stop over in the right sand box, I'd love to see that thing.
The dream has died....
I had to pay $225 bucks for a 38mm Tial Wastegate and Flange....... so no longer free.
The part is on it's way. We also put a few miles on the LC yesterday - drive good; turbo makes some serious air - boosts up real nice - good thing we got a narrow RPM engine.
Our fixed oil leak became unfixed - so we will have to patch that up again... all in all a good build so far.
We did get some attention as we drove around base - "that is F*&king fantastic" was my favorite.
chetrickerman 11-11-2007, 05:00 AM damn, oh well, its for a good cause
chickenwafer 11-14-2007, 10:57 PM Nioce!
So how much boost are you planning on running?
Maybe I missed but where the hell is your downpipe going?
I love the turbo position- that's exactly where I would have put it. The cut out in the hood, priceless.
The log manifold runs from the left side of the block. Then we run it up in a "loop" over to the firewall and up between the block and the firewall - then over to the turbo... so THEN the downpipe will actually be an uppipe - up the side of the A-pillar to the roof and capped with a truck cap if I can find one.
chickenwafer 11-16-2007, 01:22 AM sounds cool
Have you got it making any boost yet?
Nope - still waiting on wastegate.... Grrrrr
But the old put your hand on the outlet test shows that is is building pressure.
chickenwafer 11-16-2007, 02:01 AM I know how you feel. I'm waiting on my EMU and my turbo is just sitting in the garage. My car is getting angry me because it thinks I'm taunting it
It will be worth it.... for both of us.
Archie's8 11-16-2007, 08:43 AM LMAO....Kane. This thread is FTMFW bro!!! Still would have loved to see the FI Ranger/Gator, though. Man, I almost want a buy a plane ticket to KIA, just to see this thing. Keep up the good work!!
Feras 11-16-2007, 08:50 AM Nope - still waiting on wastegate.... Grrrrr
But the old put your hand on the outlet test shows that is is building pressure.
dude just take one of those exhaust flaps (with the spring) that you see on the big trucks and weld one in...that or a turkey thermometer. Anything so we can see some boost now ;)
OK OK OK - next week or this weekend I will try to get some pics / vids of the boost.
Feras 11-16-2007, 09:33 AM OK OK OK - next week or this weekend I will try to get some pics / vids of the boost.
im wondering what kind of boost a turkey thermometer can hold in...then im reminded any boost is boost ;)
We think we have a spare acetylene gauge - it will read low pressure.....
chickenwafer 11-16-2007, 10:33 AM When this is done are you going to do some burnout spinning around in circles and bouncing off the rev limiter?
chetrickerman 11-16-2007, 10:36 AM rev limiter? what rev limiter? this thing has a turbo
Hell yeah - why else did we build it???
chickenwafer 11-16-2007, 10:37 AM WTF? A turbo has nothing to do with a rev limiter
chetrickerman 11-16-2007, 10:40 AM haha, im kidding, cant you see the sarcasm in what i typed
Feras 11-16-2007, 10:50 AM here fixed: rev limiter??? this is a cheap japanese truck from the 80s, it has unlimited rpms!
The rev limiter only matters if you care about the engine - problem solved.
chetrickerman 11-16-2007, 11:01 AM Exactly Kane!!
burnoutking999 11-20-2007, 10:25 AM Update? good thread!
Still waiting on the wastegate....... GRRRRRR
I will try to get some boosted pics in the next few days - just pressure coming out of the turbo; not into the engine (since I have no wastegate and I want to run it at least once.... LOL)
BigRed 11-20-2007, 07:34 PM i thought it was called a rev-unlimiter :)
chetrickerman 11-20-2007, 07:39 PM it is
Well - here is our low budget boost gauge!!!! This thing sounds sweet when it spools.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leH2aQVWR3E
While waiting for the wastegate (GRRRRR) we decided to pull it apart again and do a real cleaning vs just getting it to run. Sounds a lot happier now.
Dirty Much?!?!?!?
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=111009&stc=1&d=1195994994
Plugs were in bad shape too - so we cleaned them all up; fixed the oil leak again and sprouted a NEW oil leak - but it is more like seepage so we will prolly leave it.
Check the video and discuss....
Spinning Sushi 11-25-2007, 06:54 AM OMG! You destroyed a perfectly good purple glove! What the hell are you thinking?! :)
The glove is OK folks - there were no gloves harmed in the making of this video..... just got blown off.
No tag - but it was military issued to the Kuwaitis in like 1990 or so..... if that means anything to you.
chetrickerman 11-25-2007, 11:07 AM that turbo sounds pretty damn good
Yeah - with the hood down; all you hear is the spool - pretty sweet!
chetrickerman 11-25-2007, 11:16 AM ahh, whats taking the wastegate so long?
don't know - I'll hit them up again next week.
chetrickerman 11-25-2007, 11:25 AM btw, i found you guys on myspace, or at least kimi
Yeah - she does the myspace gig - I think a few RX8-ers are on there too.
I never had the patience to set all the crap up.
chetrickerman 11-25-2007, 11:33 AM haha, i know how that is. some of my friends said that i should get a face book. i said i dont want to go through all that crap again. but i will add you and kimi, that cool?
Sure..... I don't much mind - even though you are from Wisconsin.
chetrickerman 11-25-2007, 11:40 AM hey, whats that supposed to mean? that i drink like prohibition is happening tomorrow? yes.
Well - here is our low budget boost gauge!!!! This thing sounds sweet when it spools.

Supposed to mail it Friday - but it has not been mailed yet.
I am not real happy - BUT they have my $$$ and if they ship it then I will live.
Believe it or not - I am actually running OUT of time to finish this!!!! That means I am going home soon - YAH!
Feras 11-29-2007, 01:10 PM neoprene boost meter ftw...still think a turkey thermometer would of been hella awesome as well.
Don't be greedy!!!!
Where in the #$%^ am I going to find a turkey thermometer here?
chetrickerman 11-29-2007, 03:42 PM haha, very true

chetrickerman 11-30-2007, 02:49 PM those are cool as hell
THAT would be out of my league I think.....
But - I could take it up IN a jet and let it visit.... does that count?

chetrickerman 12-14-2007, 12:22 PM HAHAHA. you actually drove it??
Hell yeah!!! In the parking lot - I was standing out having a smoke watching people walk by and stop and stare; climb over the hood etc to check it out - LOLOLOL.
It drives great - we just popped the JB Weld oil seal when we were having too much fun; and it is getting fuel starved in higher RPM - so need to find an upgraded fuel pump.
chetrickerman 12-14-2007, 12:35 PM :rollingla :rollingla :rollingla :rollingla wow, that is funny. where are you going to get a free fuel pump?
Dunno - we are working on it...
We had a Hummer pump - but it doesn't work and it is 24V not 12V... so we are trying to scrounge right now.
chetrickerman 12-14-2007, 12:47 PM good luck. too bad you cant bring it home with you to the states, i mean state
tdiddy 12-14-2007, 01:05 PM I got it from the people I ordered it from - please tell me you didn't send one????
I would feel soooooo bad!!!
No. I didn't send you one but I have one exactly like it in my basement.
If I would have known you were buying one earlier we could have worked out something for mine and I would have upgraded.
Yeah I posted a few requests over the months in this thread - and ended up breaking down and buying one.
It worked out well - just took FOREVER!!!!

Thanks!
I know when I make 8 PSI - the WG lifts.... so there you go! HA HA
I need to find a low pressure guage - so far no luck!
tdiddy 12-14-2007, 02:51 PM Just rig a tire pressure gauge to it...
shaunv74 12-14-2007, 06:21 PM HAHAHSAHAHHAHAHA........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Kane that is by far the funniest, best, most ghetto setup on 4 wheels. CONGRATULATIONS!
I love it and can't wait to see the hard work.
that's awesome. I think I'm going to go cut a hole in the hood of my RX8 and run a giant pantyhose air filter straight out into the air.
chetrickerman 12-14-2007, 07:17 PM i cant wait to see the video
FYI - the turbo mount really does two key things -
Allow you to hear the spool REALLLLLY good - aka LOUD
And you can watch the rear turbine spin - so it is like free entertainment - minus the exhaust poisoning.
PS - When the turbo shoots flames onto the passenger window - PRICELESS! HAHAAH No one wants to fight over "shotgun" these days...
eviltwinkie 12-15-2007, 01:36 AM PS - When the turbo shoots flames onto the passenger window - PRICELESS! HAHAAH No one wants to fight over "shotgun" these days...
