I've always wanted a 4080 box but feel they are not worth the money. So this weekend I decided to make my own. For $90 of materials and about 10 -12 hrs of labor I came up with this. Not bad for my first project. It was messy as heck but once I got going it was pretty easy. If I had known it was this easy I would not have waisted $150 on the bazooka tube I no longer need. My next project will be some interior parts....after the smell of resin wears off for this job.

 

looks good, but the price of the 4080 box is worth it if you don't have 10-12 hours to spare.

 

wow, with the spare tire kit in there too, you have almost no trunk now. not that it matters.

I actually have more room now the bazooka tube is gone....not even thinking of getting rid of the spare. Whatever doesn't fit in the trunk goes on the back seat....problem solved.

I'm not to big on giving my hard earned money away. Since you guys have lots of money to waist just pay me $300 each I'd be happy to make you one also.

If I knew how to do that, I would do it even if it took me 30 hours. Nothing like the self satisfaction of being able to say, "I built that box by myself, costed me $90 and it looks and sounds great." Props man, looks real clean.

 

if i were to ever put in subs, i'd make it myself as well. gotta love spending time to do things yourself. making it custom. good job

It wasn't towards anyone in particular. Just that he mentioned the 30 hour remark. Hence the quote. Second, I didn't think anyone was attacking me.... just sticking up for those saying they'd rather pay the money.

I read this thread before I started but took some additional steps. Where he used two fiberglass clothes/mats I used four.

 

Looks great. I built my first fiberglass box a couple months ago, and unfortunately I am sorta regretting it. It fits great and everything, the only problem is the sound. I think I messed up by buying a 12'' type r, I should have just gone with the 10 inch. Same sound and hits the same, just smaller. Anyway, the problem is that when I turn mine up as soon as it gets past a certain loudness, it almost sounds as if the center of the sub is hitting something at the back. I am almost positive that there was at least 2 inches from the back of the sub to the fiberglass. My friend has a 10'' type r and it sounds 10x better. So I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I guess I will either have to live with this, or buy a new box . I think the sub may have just been too large in the first place. Does anyone know if other 12'' subs will be able to mount in the same pre-drilled screw holes i have already? Thanks

sorry to sidetrack from the original post, I'm happy to see another hand built 4080 box, and yes the best part is telling people I built it myself. They tend to be impressed

 

There are shallow mount subs out there that you can try. You might be able to make the hole smaller by adding fiberglass then recut it to hold a 10" sub. I have way to much bass with the box and polk sub I'm using. If you look at my first photo you can see my box is larger than the 4080 box.....I think I could have put a 12" sub in mine. Not complaining about the 10" though.
