Thank you for your interest in my Puddle Lights! The lights are the same concept of the "Derwankel Puddle Lights" lighting. 194 LEDs are used for the bulbs. Pictures are below of what they look like. Please understand that the color is more subtle than the images show. Those are night shots of the colors I am shipping with my puddle lights.

UPDATE 11.09.07: Everything is set except for my order for a gram scale to come in so I can make the clear part on the underside of the puddle light enclosure. I should receive this by next week so *crosses fingers* I hope to be taking orders by mid next week. Also, added photos of puddle lights with blue lighting.

UPDATE 10.19.07: I have the preliminary items finished. Here's 2 pictures of the finished molds I created. Only revision I need to do is find a better plastic (ie. withstand 300 degrees in black [for the main part of mold housing] and clear [for bottom piece where LED will shine light]). Also, I need to create instructions to install this.

I should have this hashed out by this weekend coming up as I am going to call a couple plastic manufactures to tell me what their recommendations is for a strong, thin plastic that can withstand 250-300 deg. I chose that high of degrees because I don't want it melting or accidentally warping on whomever is interested in this. Both sides fit snug in the side view mirror.

Other than that, they WILL be shipped with LEDs. Blue and White initially. Other colors upon request. They have enough wire to route from the side view mirror down to the curtesy light on the inside door panel and will tap into those wires with vampire clips.

UPDATE 10.26.07: Just ordered the casting resin for the molding today. I should have it by the end of next week (Nov. 1st or 2nd) and then I'll be able to produce them for you all. I'll be PMing you those who are listed with more information beginning of next week.

UPDATE 10.27.07: Added pictures of it installed.

UPDATE 10.04.07: Manufacture that I ordered for the plastic resin sent me the wrong amount so I can't open the jugs right now in case if they need me to send back the shipment. Waiting on their correspondence to correct this issue. On a good note though, the design is completed.

Can anyone tell me the difference between these and neon? I've read where everyone is blasting neon as too "rice", but isn't the end result the same.....lights emitting a glow from under the car? Not trying to be a smartass, I really want to know what the difference is.

if you look underneath the side view mirrors there are spots where these lights would go. the are used on euro cars i believe. these lights only come on when you open you door and the interior lights come on, so that when you step out you dont step in a puddle. these are very subtle and are a nice touch to the car, unlike neons which are very bright and are various colors.

Yes, I'm only doing LEDs... They'll be in super white, blue, and red (if anyone is inclined to get that color)

I'm still waiting to see how much these are going for. They're fairly easy to make, I just don't want to make my own LED housing for it... I'm probably going to use yours and put it under the doors instead of the mirrors like on how the G35 have them.

Yeah, they look simple to make but because of the curves and the size you're working with in the side view mirror, it took me a couple times getting the right fit. Haha, you should see my prototype. There's super glue all over it from where I accidentally polished off too much, etc. I should figure out all the details by this weekend on everything and let you all know.

Extremely interested.

I would recommend ABS as your plastic of choice. It's a pretty hardy material and it's not overly expensive. I actually have lots of spare pieces where I work, I could send you some samples if you'd like.

Yes, they tap into the courtesy lights so it's only when those lights go on/off.

Update: I'm just finishing up the last revisions of the piece and a couple 8 members gave me some advice on which plastic resin to use. I'm getting sample resin from the companies and will be trying them out.

As where the light would shine out, it's right under your side view mirror. Mazda made space for it but never had it as a standard nor option to buy it and install on US models and other countries.

I just ordered the plastic casting resin I'm satisfied to make this with today. It said the shipping was 4 business days so I should receive it Nov. 1st or 2nd before I can start casting. Couple tweaks to the prototype I have to do before that time frame so no problem. Info to be PMed by beginning of next week and should be able to ship the first batch I make within 2 weeks.

haha i'm trying man. I ordered the black plastic resin but they sent me like a jug that's 75% full and the catalyst that's completely full. Don't want to puncture the seal until they give me the ok to do so in case i need to return or take a pic of it.

I have a Red 8 and I have all LED interior lights as Red, any suggestions as to whether I should get red lights or white lights? I'm afraid if I get the whites they wont match properly with the red interiors.... but I also want to use the lights for what they are - to light up the ground when you get out of the car... Any suggestions? Are the red lights bright enough that you can actually see the ground when they are on?

UPDATE 11.09.07: Everything is set except for my order for a gram scale to come in so I can make the clear part on the underside of the puddle light enclosure. I should receive this by next week so *crosses fingers* I hope to be taking orders by mid next week. Also, added photos of puddle lights with blue lighting.

im pretty sure you can take the mirror off without removing the door panel but if shazbot designed these exactly like the derwankel lights you will have to tap the power from the courtesy lights

In order to install it, you need to take the interior door panel (held on with 3 screws and push plugs) off to get to the mirror (3 hex screws). It taps into the courtesy lights on the panel also. It's about 15-20 min per side for me when I've been taking them on and off but it's because I've done it like 20 times now. I would suggest about 45 min per side taking it easy with my instructions and you'll be fine. Once you take your time on one side, it's quite fast on the other panel/mirror.

The mold was burned when I was pre-heating the mold over thanksgiving weekend. My mother thought I was pre-heating for the turkey and didn't look inside the oven so it went from 170 degrees to 350 degrees. Luckily, I have my final design but I don't have anymore mold mixture to finish my 2-piece mold. I thought I would have enough but it was only enough to make half the mold. I'm going to be next day shipping more mold so this delay will just bring the "ship out date" just to Wednesday.

Sorry for the delay...it'll get out this week for sure.

Thanks for all of your interest in my project! It's been a pretty cool project for me to learn how to make undercut molds and the whole process. The good thing for you guys on this is each puddle light enclosure is pretty much hand made and I inspect each one for any issues so there shouldn't be any issues.

Hey guys, I hate to do this and I know I jumped the gun by saying I'd definitely ship out the first batch today but I noticed on the clear plastic bottom, it wasn't completely dry. Like a sticky surface still. I called up the plastic manufacture and they said it can take up to 3 days for such a thin surface (less than 1/4 in) to cure but I can help it by putting it in the oven and baking it at 170 degrees to speed it up.

I'm going to go home tonight and try that. I'll update you guys soon on how it went. Again, truly sorry for the delay in shipment.

Yeah.. I wasn't thinking correctly when taking that picture and packing them at 3 AM. There's only 2 that I accidentally shipped out with 2x wire taps and that's RX4X2 and snipaz2420. I'll send 2 more taps to you guys tomorrow morning. Everyone else has the right contents needed. Sorry about that.

Got my lights about an hour ago and just finished installing them on the car.

The instruction link I was sent didn't work so I just used the derkwinkle instructions. ( http://www.rx8fun.com/puddle/docs/Puddle_Lamps.pdf )

In the derwinkle instructions they talk about 9 clips holding the door on plus one screw under the arm rest. I also had a second screw (shown in one of the pics below holding the door.

Installation is a snap, just take your time. One thing to note, the wires i had to tap into did not go in the same order from drivers to passenger. There's a blue wire and a green wire in the car. A white and black from the kit. I believe how the bulb is plugged into the puddle light determines the polarity of the connection. It's a pretty easy thing to do right, just touch the bare metal ends of the wires from the puddle light kit to the courtesy light that you'll be tapping into. When the puddle light comes on, you have your correct splice.

As many people have posted, just pull firmly on the mirror and it will pop off. When you're putting it back on make sure you feel all mounts engage and the mirror become rigid

snipaz, they're available at radioshack.

The ones I sent are for the 16-22 gauge lines. Those larger wire tap are for 12-16 (if i remember correctly). Issue you may have with the larger wire tap is it might not contact with the metal when tapping into the line.

You have to take off the mirrors to route the wires. It's only held on by 3 8mm bolts so it's not a big thing to take it off.

There are two plastic locator pins on the mirror attaching to the car. The bottom pin is straight, the top is offset. When you're taking the mirror off after removing the three bolts, lift the mirror up slightly and then down to take it off.

Good news... My LEDs were shipped 12/3 so I should receive them end of this week/early next week. I'll keep you guys updated and will ship the rest of the orders when I receive those LEDs.

Received lights today too! As foretold, its not injection mold. But had I created them myself, I'd be proud of my work. Good job!
Since I want to see them shine, and I don't know when it'll be warm enough, can I touch them to my battery to check? Is there a polarity? Can you hurt them if you connect them backwards.

i'd suggest just popping the lens of the courtesy light in the door and then taking out the bulb. plug the wires into the socket and you'll see the light.

No harm in putting them in backwards, they just wont turn on if you do.

I would suggest just using a 9v battery to test it out. A lot easier without the potential of electrocuting yourself trying to go at it with the battery.

That's what I did and I highly recommend going this route. IF you don't have a solder at the house; radio shack sells a portable butane powered one for about $20.

Best $$ I ever spent at Radio Shack. Just wish those SOB's actually sold the butane that goes with it.

Cigar shops or a WalMart are your best friends for Butane.

ok well i just finished installing 1 puddle light(didnt have other taps to do other side) and i must say anything that couldve gone wrong did. it was a pain in the ass for me. first off i broke one of the pins on the mirror assembly, i couldnt disconnect the damn speaker connector, the led was blown out, i couldnt for the life of my get the puddle light in the mirror housing(didnt see the recess for the tab to go into, the door panel wouldnt go back on and finally the mirror wouldnt adjust down so i had to pull it back off and readjust it:Eyecrazy: . i figured out all the issues that i was having and i know that the second light will go a lot smoother. so two and a half hours later:banghead: i am happy with the light just tired from the install. btw the problems i had were in NO way shazbots fault. ill post pics once i get the second light in.

:lol: yes i am not very mechanically inclined but i installed the filter, short shifter, helped with the suspension ,did the strut bar and did the clear corners. nothing major by any means. all the problems i ran into were simple little things and could have been avoided.

none taken at all! i think that getting the light into the housing took me the longest to do only because i didnt see the recess in the mirror so i was trying to get the light in every different angle until someone pointed the recess out me. other than that the other problems were resolved smoothly and quickly

LEDs came in. I'll see about posting the red lights on the car.

I'll have these shipped out by Wednesday.

Whoever wants to set up a So. Cali install for these, set it up and I'll help install these for the group.

A few days have gone by and the lights are still making me smile when I go to my car in the dark.

ha! I got a pretty box full of blues now. It's pretty sweet how they ship a large amount of LEDs to you. I'll have to take a picture tonight and upload it.
