Mazda Speed - Japanparts.com gauges

I got a quote $1300 US, for the dash guage set from Japanparts.com.

Includes controller, Water temp, Oil temp, Oil prs, and dash NAV area pod.

Problem is all the links/ parts have pictures except this one.

Has anyone seen or can post a pic of the Mazda Speed guage pod?

Thanks...

I was waiting for the above pics to load, but no luck so here is another pic

Actually the gauges are DEFI so is the pod. Mazda set up a deal 2 years ago as far as I heard with DEFI... Little history for ya haha

Funny that wasnt mentioned at that site. Oh well.. Im sure your glad to know that though hehe Its set-up on the link system..

Pretty much SOL I hate to say..

Unfortunatly Japan doesnt make many gauge pods that are made to fit the US spec RX8, so not many alternatives.

Hi Jason,

A few question, for the Mazdaspeed gauge pod, when installing, do you need to cut the dashboard?

Secondly, what other guage pods are avaliable in Japan for the 8? I am driving a JDM model.

Regards
Eugene

Curious as to how the gauges connect... are there factory plug-in ports in the wiring harness?

Also, anyone heard of a way to replace the factory oil pressure idiot-light-which-looks-like-a-gauge with a REAL gauge? In other words, leaving the stock factory gauge location in the right instrument pod, but replacing the guts with a real gauge. It makes me very uncomfortable to have just an idiot light for oil pressure, since the Renesis is SO dependant on oil.

Any info, input, or discussion is appreciated.

Thanks...

Since this gauge pod will only hold two gauges, what are the two most important gauges besides water temp and oil pressure?

I am getting it in RRP in Hong Kong, it is like 137000 yen, $1700 AUD. Plan to get that next Feb when I go back, I am sure no one can wait that long :p . I may get a discount from the 137000 yen though. :p

I read somewhere that if you swap out the oil pressure sensor with a higher sensitivity unit, you will get more movement on your gauge, and it becomes a functional item....

I don't think so. The pressure switch is just that...its a binary switch, you're either over the threshold or under it. This is an input to the PCM, and the PCM tells the gauge what to do...there is no direct link between the switch and the gauge. I had hoped that the PCM drove the gauge independently, but I was looking at the schematic last night...it appears that the PCM talks to the instrument cluster microprocessor as a unit, and this thing controls the gauges and lights...so my idea of bypassing the ECU connection to the gauge in favor of a direct link to an aftermarket sender won't work. It looks like if its to be done, it will have to be done in the PCM. Someone in another thread sent an email to Racing Beat suggesting this, since they are working on custom PCM programming, but I have no idea if they'll get around to it or not. Damn over-computerization is killing me!
