Question Navigator IR Remote Control

In the thread called "VGA to RGB+CSync" our friend antichristpm said that the Navigator in the RX-8 is built by Panasonic and is called Panasonic DVD Navigation CN-DV2300.

I did some Googling to find out whether the remote control was available as an accessory I could purchase and found the following:

"Panasonic DVD Navigation Hardware, Powerful 32-Bit RISC Processor and High-Speed Drive, GPS Receiver, Compact Gyro-Sensor, Vehicle Speed Sensor, 1-DIN Size System, Intelligent Map Matching On-Screen Map Display, 12-Step Map Scale and Orientation, Selectable Map Colour.POI Information Display Comprehensive Map/Road Information, SDAL Format Map Disc by Navtech (Navigation Technology), Most of Europe on One Disc, POI and Post Code Information, Intelligent Route Search and Guidance, Destination Search and Input by Address/Postal Code/POI, Optimised Routing, Auto Reroute, Manoeuvre List and Simulation, Route Guidance in 6 Languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch), Automatic Intersection Zoom, Direct Postal Code Input via 10-Key Pad on, Joystick Remote Control Unit, CA-LRM10X "

The IR remote control we would therefore need is the CA-LRM10X. I found lots of UK dealers that sell it and none in the US. The ones I have found are pretty expensive and I am not willing to spend all that money without any clue whether it will even work.

My questions are as follows:

1) Can anyone confirm the little IR sensor on the Navi screen is actually wired up?
2) Can anyone confirm the remote control is actually supported on our OEM version of the Panasonic navigator?
3) Can anyone confirm the US spec RX-8 actually uses the Panasonic CCN-DV2300 navigator? (Looks and description really suggest that...)
4) Anyone know where to buy one in the US or Canada?

the sensor is not wired up (antichrist took his nav display apart and confirmed it also no known wiring harness either)

4) I can give you a link for the navigation that is identical to ours and the cn-dv2300 but also plays dvds

I ll get it later

Navigator IR Sensor

I believe I found the sensor for the navigator... I ran into it while I was searching on the part number of the remote control. I seemed to be the sensor plus 6m of cable... I'll search for it again... maybe it can be added.

If you search the web for the remote control I mentioned above you will find a remote sensor for it. If US spec 04 Mazda does not have it by default then it can probably be added by buying this one (see attached pic). I just wonder whether the firmware/software supports it. I was not able to find a part number for it... it keeps getting listed as Remote Sensor for CALRM10A. Cost is probably around 20$ US.

on the Mazda 6? or the RX8?

mazradiodoc you are the man for these things but I also read (I thought by you that) you are doing this on a Mazda 6

if it does work with the 8, where do you install it? do you need to? do you need to install an IR, where can we buy it, etc.

(I'd like moving my nav controls anyway when I have the time...it is just aweful where they are as they get bumped as I shift ALL the time...this way if the remote works I would have that and disconnect the factory controller or install something else in its place, like lowered switches with a piano black cover )

The remote I use is for a European 04' Mazda6, IT WORKS ON Mazda3,6 and RX-8(any market).
The remote can be stowed in cradle or free. It operates at least 6ft away from screen.
If used in cradle, does not use batt. power.

It is great to hear the receiver is already there. Another forum user reported it wasn't... but if it works on yours then it must be there! Do you know whether the Panasonic remote I had found for our unit will work just the same? I prefer the design of that one to the Mazda remote and it probably is cheaper too. Any ideas?

A website you posted seems to allow for any country to purchase the remote. Ireland and Channel Islands are "prelisted" but it also has "Other (Please specify country)" so I would imagine they can ship to the US. What are your thoughts?

In the Mazda6, the cradle has room to mount long ways with the console. In the 8 im not sure you could mount the same.

I would have to look at the wiring again before I could tell you for sure were it gets power, also when in cradle the IR is sent hard wire back to unit and I would have to look were that wire goes before posting an answer.
As for the aftermarket remote, I would say better than 50% chance it would work BUT I dont know for sure.
To buy O.E. maybe there is a dealer in US that could order one with the Mazda part number?.
Or thew?

yes but it isn't worth getting...your better off getting the avelectronic unit from thew or something else down the road

the dvd capabilities of that other unit are limited

here is the link if you want to snoop http://www.caraudiodiscount.com/acat...avigation.html

The cradle uses the same harness/connector as used for the RX8 O.E. Navi joystick controller. It runs to the screen and plugs in the back.

This is probably a silly question, given the tech-heads that frequent this part of the forum, but why exactly would we want the remote anyhow? My wife's new "other make" car has the driver's NAV controls on the back side of the steering wheel. In that case, the remote (which her car comes with) makes perfect sense. But since the 8 has the controls in a spot easily accessible by the front seat passenger, what do we tink is the practical benefit of the Mazda remote?

Just wondering...

ahhh you must have an automatic or really really short arms :p

the location of the controls is perfectly located that my arm bumps the joystick all the time...so I'm constantly messing up the nav also the heated seat switches get bumped too

I want to remove the factory controls, and place the heated seat controls lowered in that location, then I'll use the remote to run the nav and probably sell the controller on ebay

if I can't get the remote I'll be moving or lowering the factory nav controls anyway since they drive me nuts

but really I don't use the nave much anyway, maybe once a month?...I use it for movies, showing the playlists of mp3 cds/dvds, and soon xbox

not while I'm driving up course :p
