View Full Version : New Posts drop down menu is bad

Its an interesting idea to have the drop down menu containing all those extra options. Unfortunately due to the error of the add overlapping the menu on occasion, it becomes more of a hassle than anything. I would suggest seeing how popular others find it before deciding on whether or not to keep it. Personally I'd say if the ad overlap issue can be fixed then it wouldn't matter.

Yup - the banner ads display over the drop down menu making it a guess as to what you are clicking.

Banner ads don't display over the drop down menu, but I personally don't like the drop down menu anyways. I'd rather not have two clicks to get to new posts when I'd probably never click those other options. Just my two cents.

Issue only happens on the flash type banners...like Synaptic. The regular ones are OK.....I just hit refresh to get a different banner, and it works.

I would prefer the one click new post button as well :)

It's doubtful those little green links are providing any real "revenues" for the site. But I have noticed more non-automotive ads up top lately. ;)

the drop down menu is only blocked for me by the synaptic 3 ad... the black one that stars withe the shift knob in the middle, then the engine, then the red rx8. annoying none the less...seems to always come up when i wanna click the new posts link

by the way, i use firefox and its only for that one ad

I think if you fix the layering then it should be fine. Just add a CSS style to the tag with a z-index. It has been a few years, so I may be way off.

You see the bug is a revenue generator...its all a big conspiracy man! Due to the bug your having to either refresh the page or click to another page generating another view...sometimes you accidentally click on the ad instead of the intended place generating another view...

+1 on the problem with the Synaptic ad. Is that something they have to fix?

I vote for 1-click for New Posts.

"New Posts" on the menu is redundant, a duplicate of the initial click.

"Today's Posts" is a duplicate of the one on the "Quick Links" menu.

"Find My Posts" and Find My Threads" seems as though they would be better located under "Search". It's not intuitive that they would be under a "New Posts" menu. Or put them under "Quick LInks" to minimize the number of menus needed to look through.

If you are not going to change the New Posts from a menu to a single-click option then at least move it to another location so the drop-down menu is NOT BEHIND AN AD BANNER. Swap it with the FAQ link or something. It's a PITA where it is.

An even better improvement for me would be to get an email notification everytime there is an addition to a thread i'm interested in. Several discussion groups have this option, but I'd be more active on this RX-8 list if this also were possible here.

As stated above this feature is already available. Go to your "user cp" in the menu bar above and mess with your subscription settings.

It usually takes 4 or 5 refreshes before that ad isn't chosen.
I presume that Synaptic paid to be "seeded" more often than the other advertisers.

Yes. The one-click was much more convenient.

And the problem is only with Synaptic.

So here's a vote for return of the one-click and a request to have the Synaptic ad reformatted.

For anyone who uses IE and doesn't have l33t plug-ins like ad block you can add one line to your hosts file to block the offending ad. Doing so is outside the scope of this post and left as an exercise to the user.

The only reason taht the Synaptic ad pops up like that is because it's a flash ad. The rest are all .gifs. If the webmasters were to get more Flash advertisers, then they would all block the drop down. There is probably code in this ad that makes it the top most layer of anything on the page. The only solution would be to recode the ad or to move the New Posts to another spot.

Rems31
08-03-2007, 03:54 PM
