View Full Version : Coils life span? titaniumgr3y 05-15-2007, 02:46 AM Guys, what is the life span for Rx8 coils ? do we have any info? eforer 05-15-2007, 06:40 AM Guys, what is the life span for Rx8 coils ? do we have any info? I can tell you first hand that the original coils released with the car in the 04 model don't last long. I replaced mine with the updated ones at 8k. So far so good with the updated coils though. O'Renesis 05-15-2007, 06:49 AM Technically the ignition coils should last the lifetime of the car. Coils have no moving parts and consequently have nothing to wear out. In the hostile environment of the engine bay properly designed coils should have no problems. Apparently the coils used on the RX-8 are prone to failure due, I believe, to inferior quality build. It appears that the insulation breaks down causing the coils to short/ground on the high tension side. There is no way of knowing if or when a coil will fail. Mazda say they have a new and better coil, but I personally cannot verify this and I believe it is early days for any of the new coils to start failing. Time will tell. expo1 05-15-2007, 07:04 AM I can tell you first hand that the original coils released with the car in the 04 model don't last long. I replaced mine with the updated ones at 8k. So far so good with the updated coils though. My 8 was built 5/2003 and I have 92,000 miles on the original coils. dannobre 05-15-2007, 07:41 AM They are cheap...and appear to fail often before 50K miles.....I just bought a set shipped for $109US........about the same price as new plugs brillo 05-15-2007, 08:07 AM I'm going to replace mine every 50K, for $100, why the hell not. peterlemonjello 05-15-2007, 08:10 AM Mine failed at 42k miles but I'd bet they were degraded way before then. I noticed a big difference with the new coils. My 8 is an 06/03 build date. chickenwafer 05-15-2007, 11:38 AM I have 41K miles and still on original coils. At 50k I'll replace them. Only $100 like others said- they're cheap eforer 05-15-2007, 12:26 PM mine failed at 8k (or around there) as I mentioned above. The car sat for almost a year before I bought it. Although that should have no impact on it. I bought it with the 8k miles on it and the coils were bad when I got it. Dealer replaced them, huge improvement. titaniumgr3y 05-15-2007, 02:42 PM nice.. i got the general idea.. nycgps 05-15-2007, 10:38 PM it depends on the condition that you're running your coils @ swoope 05-15-2007, 10:43 PM 70k miles on them. still no issues. beers  titaniumgr3y 05-16-2007, 06:32 AM very nice... whenson417 05-16-2007, 02:40 PM Mine new and improved coils are showing the little white spots at about 15k. I suppected them to be bad again because my car died while at a red light last week. I took it in and am currently waiting on my new engine to arrive. Guess it wasn't the coils that caused the engine failure. Astral 05-16-2007, 03:15 PM Mine new and improved coils are showing the little white spots at about 15k. I suppected them to be bad again because my car died while at a red light last week. I took it in and am currently waiting on my new engine to arrive. Guess it wasn't the coils that caused the engine failure.Mazda service manual/TSBs (forget exactly which) say that the white spots on the coils are not indicative of coil performance (i.e. you can have a perfectly fine coil with white spots). MazdaManiac 05-16-2007, 06:24 PM I've been through 3 or 4 sets over the last 52k miles. However, only 3 or 4 of them actually failed completely on their own and I burned 4 of them by just being bone-headed (I had my ignition control jumpered for 12v instead of 5v - they lasted exactly zero seconds; at least they were already old). So, I've had half of my coils become marginal and the other half failed, more or less. eforer 05-17-2007, 01:54 AM I thought this http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=113744&highlight=testing+coil blast from the past was relevant to the converstion. MazdaManiac 05-17-2007, 02:01 AM "Blast from the past"? That is a current thread. eforer 05-17-2007, 02:58 AM well, blast from the recent past. Either way, its good reading. Its good to know that even if a coil sneaks by the ol multimeter, it still may be underperforming. Marx8nka 05-17-2007, 03:06 PM or failing the multimeter but the car still loves them :Eyecrazy: MazdaManiac 05-17-2007, 03:14 PM ^^ True, though that is pretty rare. Furthermore, if you really press those coils (hot day, drag racing, etc.) they will probably give up on you at a rather inopportune moment. Most of the time when it seems like the car "loves" those coils, its because they are the trailing which won't be felt by the driver until they actually do fail and kill the idle quality. titaniumgr3y 05-20-2007, 08:29 AM its been a week now that my car has a problem with coils a & c and i havent noticed any loss of power or difference. Will it take longer to make a difference? nycgps 05-20-2007, 01:01 PM There was a study that a typical new born human *should* have 250 years of life. but .... who the fuxk actually have 250 yrs of lfe? cuz it depends on TONS of factors. so just buy new coils. replace them, be happy, just like me. :) Your CEL code wasnt even the valid code. make sure u got the right one dude. titaniumgr3y 05-21-2007, 03:36 AM thanks but, two diagnostic tools would lie ? or my car went crazy ? :P now ok, i have the burnt coils symptoms and both DT are saying about the coils/coils circuit, i am convinced that i have to replace them. nycgps 05-21-2007, 06:03 AM dude, but the thing is that the codes that you posted werent valid. at least according to the service manual. thats why u should've double check b4 u got ur coils. Marx8nka 05-21-2007, 06:10 AM I got a new set of coils, tested them with multimeter - and they all failed. Have been using them over 1 month already, redlining daily, no problems in idling nor redlining... titaniumgr3y 05-21-2007, 06:30 AM what i am saying is that i have doubled checked it with two different diagnostic tools. I switch the check engine light off and it comes up with same codes. Both diagnostics show the same. I ve sent an ime to linearlogic (scangauge2) and they told me that these codes for this car model means Coils A & C circuit, just like the second handheld diagnostic tool that i have used. MazdaManiac 05-21-2007, 12:31 PM I got a new set of coils, tested them with multimeter - and they all failed. Have been using them over 1 month already, redlining daily, no problems in idling nor redlining... You used the wrong polarity on the multimeter. Marx8nka 05-21-2007, 04:08 PM :lol2: nope even tried switching polarity, and all possible combinations as couldn't believe my eyes MazdaManiac 05-21-2007, 04:44 PM So, what were the actual numbers? titaniumgr3y 05-22-2007, 05:43 AM what is the standard for new coils? titaniumgr3y 05-22-2007, 02:15 PM guys, i have replaced coils and all are fine now, P0351 P0353 stand for A & C coil circuits. Marx8nka 05-22-2007, 04:01 PM my mm readings: as in http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=1775879&postcount=27 A-B around 1.6kOHM B-C open circuit (this is abnormal acc. to the workshop manual) C-A open circuit and after finally succeeding to start the car, my scanner (OBDScan-APEX) didn't find any codes... and the car still runs nicely :) MazdaManiac 05-22-2007, 04:26 PM Either your B-C check was done with the VOM in the wrong polarity or incorrectly via some other means because an open in that position will absolutely stop the coil dead. NEWireless 05-23-2007, 10:22 AM 63k on my '04 manual. I started the motor last week and it sounded like there was a hole in the muffler or something and the Check-Engine light came on. The engine smoothed out when it warmed-up, but the dealer said the coils were shot. crimson-rain 05-23-2007, 10:55 AM 70k miles on them. still no issues. 04 model here too with 70K+ miles on stock coils. No problems. *knocking on wood* wisconsinben 05-23-2007, 07:51 PM 04 model here too with 70K+ miles on stock coils. Here is some coil "Info" worth reading............ >>> 13B-MSP coil thread <<< (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=131476) REgards mestaboy04 08-13-2009, 03:01 PM I have my car at the dealership replacing the engine...yea engine flood. well they just called me and said the coils are not covered under warranty. So they want to charge me $319 for parts, installation, labor, and taxes. My question is would it be bad if I drove my vehicle 4 miles from the dealership to my house and just replaced them myself? They said my coils are bad....I just want to know if those 4 miles is going to damage my car... Thx! ndhoffma 08-13-2009, 03:06 PM No... Im sure they were bad for many more miles before the 4 youll have to drive it home, and no harm was done then. |
