View Full Version : Sunroofs
AfroCreame 09-14-2003, 11:40 AM Is it just me, or does the sunroof on the RX8 suck? I liked the clean look on my G35C but the RX8's aftermarket looking, popped out when open sunroof totally ruins the lines of the car. Oh well, maybe they didn't have the room due to the curves on the roof.
Bengal Tiger 09-14-2003, 11:46 AM i think it looks great...like it's angry. You know how some animals arch up when they're pissed....that's what the 8 does.
RX8Lover 09-14-2003, 11:55 AM I like it too - its almost like a spoiler.
mmjames 09-14-2003, 12:00 PM One thing I like about it is that when it is open people know you have one. It is not hidden.
I picked up my son a football practice and I had to park for a moment. I rolled the windows and slid the roof back and the high school kids absolutely went nuts. My son had the biggest grin I had ever seen on his face. It was almost as big as mine ;)

Ditto with the kids. the look of the open sunroof gave me pause when i first saw my car at the dealership. I didn't think I liked it. My son convinced me otherwise, and his collection of 15-yr-old friends went nuts the first time they saw it open. Since my son was the inspiration for me getting this car in the first place (he convinced me my minivan days were over) I tend to respect his judgement on the "cool factor" of the '8.
Spin9k 09-14-2003, 12:19 PM I think it cuts down on sunroof wind noise, and it does look like a spoiler to me, just pushes down in the middle!
Besides, just nudging the 1st switch back and forth and only opening the sunroof an inch or two gives a great 'back of your neck' downwind. Amazing!
I disagree about the wind noise. It's quite a bit louder than my old Prelude's sunroof.
I inadvertently entertained a whole schoolbus full of kids when I opened the Prelude's roof a couple of years ago. :)

I agree, but I do like having it! Do not think they had enough room in the roof, due to its curve.
cruzdreamer 09-14-2003, 01:08 PM I think it looks cool with it showing....on my Mazda Protege5 you can barely see it when it's tinted open.....I always wished you could see it! My 8 should be here in October!
XDEEDUBBX 09-14-2003, 02:08 PM the sun roof to me actually accents the beauty of the car. The other guys was right..it does look like a spoiler...

Doesn't suck to me.
I rather have a pop out sunroof with a functional rear seat of the RX then losing a good 3-4 inches of rear headroom because of the G35c's sloping roof and retracting sunroof design.
Besides I like the pop out design. Suits me fine.
B-Nez 09-14-2003, 04:08 PM I like it, because it is reminiscent of the moonroof design in my '91 RX-7. I like a little nostalgia in my RX-8. :)
RotorBoy 09-14-2003, 04:10 PM I know most auto manufacturers put sunroofs/moonroofs that open hidden on their upper end cars. Even though the 8 is Mazda's upper end car, it would be impossible without really damaging headroom.
Just curious, but did the Millenia have a moonroof that opened hidden?
mikeb 09-14-2003, 04:13 PM I dont like how it looks but I love having it because I never had one before

Me too- would have preferred it slid back into the roof, but I'll live. The car kicks ass, and that's all I care about. The moonroof was just icing on the cake.
JeRKy 8 Owner 09-14-2003, 10:10 PM Do you guys think it would be dumb if I got an aftermarket sunroof put in? I would want the exact same sunroof that comes with the touring and gt package. Would it be something as easy as just tearing offthe regular roof on my sports package rx8 and replacing it with the one that hasa sunroof plus doingall the wiring? Can all of that be done for a fairprice?

I don't think it would be dumb, if that's what you really want.
I have a feeling that if you want the exact same sunroof, it will not be cheap especially with labor and other parts needed. Can't answer whether it would be a fair price. It would depend on how much it is, how much you are willing to spend to want one. You might have to buy a new headliner too, but I'm not sure of that.
emailists 09-15-2003, 03:00 AM Just my opinion - I have the roof on my 8, but didn't have it on my 94 Probe GT. I would never cut into the roof of a car I liked. Plus the 8's sunroof starts so far back- the driver barely sees it (from the rear seats it is nice!)
I say enjoy your car and the extra headroom you get without the SUnroof.
Squidward 09-15-2003, 05:21 AM i don't like mine. It's friggin ugly. It should have been hidden like the higher-end autos. This one is a "cheap" implementation, IMO.
Sun/moon roofs aren't something I perfer anyway.. I would have opted to not pay for it if given the choice, but unfortunately it comes with the Grand Touring package.
I'd swap roofs with anyone who wants one, if only it were possible ;)
LesPaul 09-15-2003, 07:27 AM I think it looks great. Well thought out design, the way it bends in the roof. Rich, tailored, high-end look to it. This is my third moon roof and it does all the tricks I would want it to. Easy to use and the sliding cover (inside) is a nice touch.
Cruising around the other night, I had it fully opened. Went to see our fire department showing off a new ladder pumper. There through the open moon roof I saw the sprays of water, the moon in the background creating a small rainbow. Now that's a moon roof.

HUmm..didn't think about it that way. The rear headroom on the G35 did suck quite a bit. I guess I agree that I would rather it pop out and have more comfort for rear passengers.
Tigster 09-15-2003, 01:40 PM A friend of mine had a 95 Eclipse and had an aftermarket sunroof put in, (the dealer can do it as well). He paid approx 1500 in all to have it done. He did have a leak problem, It dripped when it rained real hard. It is a matter of cutting the roof and altering the headliner, so pick someone with a very good reputation. Or talk to the dealer. Just my 2 cents
Alvidrez 09-17-2003, 11:32 AM The Millenia moon roof did not rise above the car's metal roof when open.
RodsterinFL 09-17-2003, 03:19 PM great roof. I noticed some other cars have a very simialr pop top too. It DOES look like a spoiler - ok it IS A SPOILER!
RodsterinFL 09-17-2003, 03:21 PM great roof. I noticed some other cars have a very simialr pop top too. It DOES look like a spoiler - ok it IS A SPOILER!
The millennia's roof did not open out but the wind vacuum was unbelieveable at speed without a deflector and they ARE UGLY.
MSMAMBA 09-17-2003, 03:25 PM I ain't really a big fan of sunroof.
I had it on my old Maxima and the MPV as well. I really use it anyway.
I haven't even tried the sunroof since I picked it up on Monday evening. I do wish the car does not come with the sunroof even with the GT package.
blizz81 09-17-2003, 08:29 PM I think the arching tilt design makes the roof look more aggressive, but it's at the expense of any water on the roof draining into the cabin. A very minimal function vs. form battle. I keep the roof tilted in my max when there's a light rain falling, or in the winter when there's snow/ice on the roof, and just because it slightly tilts upwards instead of back and up, it can still drain into paths on the roof.
Personally though, my 8 would be a sport pkg at best, no sunroof.
smoothSevenz 09-18-2003, 07:39 AM The sunroof does enhance without a doubt the sporty edgy sexy genesequa of the car. My first, a 90 gtu did not have the sunroof. I always use to see 7's with it and always wanted it. It really does make the car look better........the slide back hidden versions are fine, I guess when push comes to shove the 8 really is more of a sports car more than a luxury vehicle albeit like a hybrid.
brownchiro 09-24-2003, 11:32 AM Does the sunroof self retract at high speeds? I had a turbo beetle that would do this at about 90 miles per hour or so.
Time2Share 09-24-2003, 04:48 PM Yes it does. I noticed that mine self retracted the other day when I hit 163 mph on interstate 5. Good feature
smoothSevenz 09-24-2003, 05:53 PM sarcasm.....tsk,tsk
mikeb 09-24-2003, 07:21 PM that would be cool but it doesn't
smoothSevenz 09-24-2003, 10:12 PM Doesnt one (or all models) of the recent porsches have a spoiler that goes up when you reach a certain speed.........
smoothSevenz 09-24-2003, 10:16 PM Wow ...some of you guys really spend way to much time on this forum.....ive been here since early last year and only 70 posts.I guess it took till the cars to finally came out before I really got excited.........
